Tekzilla | Episode 79

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1163 days ago

PMA 09 just took place and Patrick is speaking to Lori Grunin from Cnet about a lot of the announcements and product reveals at the show.  There is a lot of good information here so if you are a shutterbug (and from the 50s and know that term) this is definitely one not to miss. Also on this episode is a segment about getting scratches out of CDs and if you need to be an expensive gizmo to get the job done.  It feels like it is right out of 1999.  It is still relevant to the gamers and DVD hoarders though.  Not too much longer and kids won’t...

TWiT 185: Craig’s Lust

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1167 days ago

Twitter is the biggest topic yet again this week.  There is a 20 minute discussion at the beginning here.  I get it, it’s a lot, but why do people hate it so much when Twitter gets so much coverage on TWiT?  It’s a big deal and is afforded the ammount of time that any others topic would garner in it’s position.  If you haven’t joined the revolution it is high time. Facebook is launching a redesign of their homepage and profile views next week.  It looks to provide more category based navigation and live-view of your...

Tekzilla | Episode 78

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1170 days ago

Up front we get some information about how to get a surround sound setup working without going with the digital output.  There seem to be some solutions, but it really comes down to shelling out for an audio receiver. Patrick and Veronica also touch on DVRs and how to record TV without having to pay for a monthly payment box.  There are many ways to go about this if you have a computer that you are willing to dedicate to the task.  One of the best solutions being the Elgato eyetv for Mac. DVRs Without Subscriptions Fees, Dump That VCR! When To...

Tekzilla | Episode 77

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1177 days ago

A big part of the show this week is centered around the Mobile World Congress which took place in Barcelona last week.  Windows Mobile is the focus here.  Manufacturers seem to be having a bit of trouble getting Android phones out. Veronica does an interview with astronomer, Dr. Frank Summers.  Space is a classic geek subject so it is cool to see it covered here.  There is some really in-depth information here.  Hopefully with more of this kind of coverage, more people will become interested in space again and help fund future NASA projects. New...

Tekzilla | Episode 76

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1184 days ago

The round-up of HD mini camcorders is really interesting.  It is pretty amazing how quickly we have gotten HD recording in a form factor small enough to fit in our pocket.  The Flip seems to retain its “standard” denotation. We also get some follow-up answers to some questions about Windows Home Server stuff that was covered on last week’s episode.  That stuff is pretty complicated. How good is a $200 HD Camcorder? We’ve got Creative’s Vado, Flip’s mino HD and Kodak’s Zi6! Tip Of My Tongue …. find...

Tekzilla | Episode 75

Those 7″ mini USB monitors are so tempting.  I don’t know what it is about them and they are a little expensive, but it’s just the kind of thing that us gadget lovers can’t escape wanting. Patrick and Veronica cover the Kindle 2 here, but enough has been said about that around here. Intel’s Core i7 just came to the desktop a few months ago and there is already talk of it coming to notebooks.  Still waiting on the updated iMac that hopefully sport this screaming chip. Note: Links below lead to the large Quicktime version. ...

Tekzilla | Episode 73

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1205 days ago

The Eye-Fi explorer looks like it works really well.  I have seen these before but was always sceptical.  Patrick and Vernoica are talking about these wifi enables SD cards this week and the verdict is that they work. My iPhone  always seems to last the day before needing to be charged so I am not in the market for a battery pack.  I like my phone sleek and slim so no cover for me either, but if you don’t mind a little extra bulk in exchange for more battery life there are some good choices covered in this episode. Embedded, light-weight...

Tekzilla | Episode 72

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1212 days ago

We missed a few of the past Tekzilla episodes around here, but we were a little overloaded on CES stuff. Does anyone really want geotagging for their photos?  It seems to be a big feature in the new iPhoto, but is this really a mass market feature?  It’s cool and all, but it seems a little overboard in whole social networking, web 2.0 direction. Can you stream HD movies over a Powerline Network? GParted, Geotagging Photos: we’ve got several different ways to do it. Xbench, Will old movies and TV shows look good in Blu-ray? Runtime...

Tekzilla | Episode 69 – CES Day 2

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1224 days ago

The Tekzilla crew are really cranking out the shows.  In this one from CES day 2 we get iPod speaker docks, cameras, a blu-ray player, the Sony Vaio P and $9000 touch-screen sewing machine!  Who needs some of this stuff?  Still cool to see though. Ultimate Blu-ray Player, Vaio P, Digital Cameras and The V Segment Runtime – 21:47 Link (Tekzilla)

Tekzilla | Episode 68 – Macworld 2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1224 days ago

Patrick and Veronica are roaming the show floor of Macworld on this episode.  Does anyone use trackballs anymore?  I haven’t really seen those around since the 90s. The new iPhoto features look pretty cool.  The faces and places tools look great.  But $80 is a little steep.  There really should be a cheaper upgrade price. iTunes Kills DRM, New MacBook Pro, SlimBlade Trackball, Shure USB Mics, Much More! Runtime – 23:47 Link (Tekzilla)

Tekzilla | Episode 67 – CES Day 1

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1225 days ago

Patrick and Veronica are covering CES on this week’s show and they have some cool stuff on-hand.  Being live makes this episode a little rough, but still fun and informative non-the-less. The Lenovo dual-screen notebook looks pretty crazy.  After having used a multiple monitor set-up for a few years now I can understand how someone would want more than one screen, but in a notebook?  Seems a little impractical to me.  Lightweight and portable on the go and heavy duty at the workstation is more of the way to go for most I would think. HD...

Tekzilla | Episode 66

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1231 days ago

The touchSmart looks really good.  HP seem like they have really stepped up their game recently.  They have good design, great software and have really become one of the best PC manufacturers out there. Camino: Better Than Firefox, Best External Drive, HP TouchSmart PC, Super Subwoofer Checklist for a new PC. Hard Drive Speed vs. Size, SmallNetBuilder, Roll your own backup, What does Gigahertz mean? TWiT 175: Highlights And Lowlifes 2008

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1237 days ago

We are lucky enough to get a clip show on this weeks episode of TWiT.  When it comes to a weekly show, making a clip show is incredibly time consuming and labor intensive so it great to get this one. Listening to all of these clips makes me glad I put TWiT in the top 5 that I put out a few days ago.  The discussion here is great with so many different points of view from so many people.  You absolutely will not find another tech podcast with a better roster than this. A selection of good and bad TWiT clips from 2008, featuring many of this year’s...

Tekzilla | Episode 65 – Top Ten Computing Tips of 2008!

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1238 days ago

I personally like these year round-ups that go on around this time.  Tekzilla’s content is especially tailored to work well in this format and here we have it. Tekzilla’s daily tips are a great short burst of info every day.  Of course not all of them are that useful and many of them you probably already know, but they are short and unobtrusive enough to watch just in case there is a nugget of ingenuity in there. Firefox, Windows, Google, iTunes, OS X… Tekzilla’s Ten Most Popular Tips of 2008 is guaranteed to make your...

Tekzilla | Episode 64

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1245 days ago

A new addition to the tech podcasts featured here; Tekzilla offers a lot of great tech info with a little Veronica Belmont on the side.  Maybe that comes off a little wrong.  She knows her stuff and what else would you expect from Ryan Block’s better-half? Especially notable in this episode is the mini “photog” studio.  I am of the opinion that almost all people that are into tech eventually get into photography.  There is some weird sort of cross-polination between these two types of geeks (me included). There is also some...
