The Oddcast 04/09/2010

by Derek Lavigne in Podcasts671 days ago

This week’s Oddcast is super-sized and starts off much like many other podcasts, which quick talk about the iPad. Talk then turns to rapid-fire discussions of games like 3D Dot Game Heroes, the new Call of Duty, and Def Jam Rapstar. Justin Beiber remains a topic of conversation before moving on to a story about UK schools using Grand Theft Auto IV as a tool to teach students right and wrong. A recent one-sided CNN article on RapeLay somehow leads to a minor argument with Tina defending the public’s right to know, while Chris goes as...

This weeks show is mostly made up of an assortment of random stories from GDC last week. From games played to Sams failed attempts to lie to a woman demoing a game. There’s some discussion of the Playstation Move, which Sam thinks is interesting although agrees it doesn’t seem to offer too much more than the Wii. Tina thanks Sharkey for introducing her to alot of indie games through the recession gaming segement as it meant she knew alot of the games on display. This leads to some debate as to what makes an indie game “indie”...

The Oddcast: 03/04/2010

Alot of this weeks show is taken up with news discussion, interspersed with the usual joking around the Oddcast crew partake in. Six days in Fallujah, the controversial title that Konami decided not to publish, has apparently been finished. The guys discuss how and if the game should be released. Sharkey thinks it depends on how the story is presented and dealt with. The reality of actual warfare is in stark contrast to videogame warfare. The guys discuss how this could an issue when translating a real event to the medium. The drama at Infinity...

The show kicks off with Sam talking about his time at DICE. The impression he got while there is that alot of the developers of more traditional games aren’t sure about the more casual platforms like Facebook. From developers reactions it seems they want to make the Facebook devs part of the conversation but also keep them at a distance. Some Sonic fans have planned a very interesting boycott. To protest of Sonic 4 which is apparently not what they want they will buy Sonic 1. This led to some pretty funny comments on the news article which...

Epic Mickey could potentially come to PS3 and 360, this is the subject that kicks off this weeks episode. There is some debate about whether is looks like the N64 game Glover, Sharkey maintains it doesn’t but the others aren’t so sure. Blizzard finally got the Starcraft II beta underway so alot of the 1UP crew have been playing it. Some units are gone but there are have also been additions to the roster, Tina found it odd to be playing Starcraft but have things like the elevation of units be a factor while playing. The recession gaming...

The Oddcast: 01/29/2010

After hitting some news stories from the past week the Oddcast crew tackle the Apple iPad. Everybody but Sam is very skeptical of it, Sam thinks it’s a great bit of tech with alot of potential. The others think it is far too limited when you can get something similar for the same price or less. A community member wonders what makes an RPG an RPG, the definition essentially. The guys skirt around the question while discussing RPGs in general. They talk about some of their favourites and mechanics they have liked in games over the years. The...

Tina starts the show off with a rant about Wii Sports Resort getting 1UPs Sports game of 09, she thinks that award should have gone to a “proper” sports game. The crew then run down some of the news stories from the past week, including Bungies efforts to get their community involved in helping the Haiti relief effort. Nintendo disputes that the DSi XL is for old people but the guys dispute the suggestion families will be using it to gather round and play the DS together. Sam brought some news with him, the recent statement from Bobby...

A recently unearthed Super Mario Galaxy rip-off is one of the first things up for discussion this week. The crew wonder what the point of it is and who it’s really for, Sharkey however is somewhat impressed that they managed to copy the style so well if nothing else. To hype up Final Fantasy XIII Square-Enix has sent a “party bus” on tour, it recently stopped by the 1UP offices. There didn’t appear to be much partying going on and everyone wonders if a “party bus” is really appealing to the audience of the game. Pocket...

Tales of thanksgiving trips start off the show this week. Not much besides Assassins Creed 2 got played over the break it would seem. A surprisingly spirited debate about the potential non-gaming applications of Natal is up next. There are certainly some interesting ideas, but whether they become reality remains to be seen. The crew move on to discussing some indie/free games including Captain Forever, Continuity and Fantasy of the Sword, and there are a lot of points hit here. Tina recommends checking out 1UP community member Matt Clark‘s...

1UP, along with every other big gaming outlet, is in the midst of working through their game of the year awards, and the crew provides some insight into the process here. Sharkey talks about getting Left 4 Dead content into your Left 4 Dead 2, and Ken Kutaragi gets the brunt of more than a few jokes. The bizarre, and somewhat obnoxious, Dante’s Inferno marketing is still in full force, and everyone is tired of it. The 2nd part of the show is an interview with EA 2D’s Ethan Levy, the producer of Dragon Age Journeys. Covered games and...

Well, that was quick. Good Grief is back in its new form, The Oddcast. This first episode is somewhat anomalous in that it has 2 guests, developer James Silva and Q Entertainment producer James Mielke. Sam mentions that they hope to have a guest every week though, so maybe it is going the 4 Guys 1UP route. Things are a little less irreverent than a classic Good Grief episode, but we’ll see if that continues. Natal is the first topic this week with the group speculating on its release. The conversation then moves onto game sales and the gaming...
