It’s a rather dry episode this week. Friend of the show, Michael Gartenberg is on, and quite frankly, the show suffers a bit for it. While he has some nice insight into the topics of the week, the atmosphere of the episode is quite different, and the fun flies out the window.

The recent declaration of the death of the CrunchPad is the center of attention and there are a few theories about what happened in the development process expressed here. Michael feels like it was a product without a market, but Ryan feels like it had a bit more promise.

The Barnes & Nobel versus Spring Design issue gets some discussion, as does the recent developments in the Psystar versus Apple litigation. The news of the updated Palm Pixi OS closes-out the show.

We’re back from break and brought along with us a special guest: Michael Gartenberg, analyst at Interpret and an old friend. Ryan starts off Chrome OS talk by announcing that one of the gdgt’s engineers compiled the developer code preview, placed it into a VMware virtual machine, and made it available on their site. Beyond that, Ryan is mostly unexcited about the OS considering its not much more than a browser. In his characteristic optimism, Peter notes that this is Google really throwing its weight behind their own OS, which is exciting enough to begin with.

Sony seems to be interested in making a digital distribution storefront similar to iTunes and both of the guys agree that it’s a totally useless idea, especially when considering the multitude of different branches of the Sony media empire and past failures in similar software projects.

Ryan seems totally impressed with the HTC HD2 and its implementation of Windows Mobile 6.5. Peter attributes its success mostly to the fact that it skips over most of the core 6.5 device deficiencies by having a large screen, customized HTC interface, and fast processor. The guys discuss Barnes & Noble Nook briefly and close out the show talking about Nokia’s turn to Maemo as it’s primary smartphone platform rather than Symbian.

Well, if you haven’t already heard, Chrome OS is finally public! And hey, even if it won’t really be available for consumer use for another year, we’ve already got a public preview of Chrome OS for download! We also got word that Sony’s also looking at building an iTunes-like media store, Barnes & Noble’s sold out of the nook this holiday season, AT&T lost its injunction against Verizon’s ads, and Nokia’s move to Maemo on its flagship devices. Oh, and if you’re thinking about an HTC HD2, and definitely listen in for our hands-on this week.

The Palm Pixi is now available and the verdict is mixed. WebOS has not taken off in the way that Palm would have hoped, and the guys argue that the only real chance they have is if they expand to other carriers. The Blackberry Storm 2 also receives middling opinions, but the addition of more under-screen button contacts makes the clickscreen work marginally better. Samsung’s foray into the smartphone OS market with Bada also sparks a discussion.

It was a big for media center device announcements. Boxee is getting into the dedicated hardware business, and they will be having an official announcement on December 3rd. Dell has also unveiled a Mac mini sized media center computer, the Zino HD, that will be priced at an aggressive $250.

Mini DisplayPort has been accepted by VESA as a standard connector type and the guys feel like we will be seeing it implemented in a lot more devices starting next year. A few clarifications and a site update bring this one to a close.

The recent news that Best Buy is looking to team-up with CinemaNow to deliver digital content is the first topic up this week. If they can get the hardware partnerships in place, this could be a formidable entry into a burgeoning market. Apple has the same sort of idea and is rumored to be looking into creating an alternative to cable through iTunes. The guys feel like this is an up-hill battle for them with the wariness of content providers.

Barnes and Noble’s Nook e-reader received a very warm reception upon its unavailing, but they are now dealing with a lawsuit with Spring Design over the color LCD under e-ink display layout of the device. The guys are discussing the forthcoming Nintendo DSi XL and provide a reasoned discussion about the products existence.

The Beatles apple-shaped music anthology gets a mention before the discussion moves on to the big phone news. The beautiful HTC HD2 has been confirmed for US release early next year, and the HTC Eris gets an almost equally warm reception. Micro 4/3 camera talk finishes the topics for the week.

Looks like digital video is having an interesting week, between Best Buy and CinemaNow partnering up to make a huge push into device-based content distribution, as well as the rumor that Apple is pushing a $30 per month iTunes-based cable TV-killer. We also caught wind of the legal storm brewing between Spring Design and Barnes & Noble, as well as a few upcoming product launches, like the Nintendo DSi XL, the HTC HD2 (in the US), and Beatles Limited Edition USB drive. We’ve also got hands-ons with the HTC Eris, BlackBerry Bold 9700, as well as the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 and Olympus E-P2 micro four thirds cameras.

Any other week, the announcement of Netflix coming to PS3 would be big news, but it has been overshadowed by the inundation of activity in the mobile world.

Palm has announced that the Pixi will be launching next month for $99. While this is a reasonable price, it is going to be a hard sell against the $99 iPhone 3G, and the guys say as much.

Motorola’s DROID, available from Verizon on November 6th for $199, has made huge waves in the mobile world. With its high-res display, Android 2.0 OS and Google’s recently deployed turn-by-turn navigation, the iPhone may just have its first real competitor. There is a lot of innovation here and it is nice to have a product, other than Apple’s offerings, driving forward movement in the mobile sector. Peter and Ryan are reasonably excited and offer a lot of hands-on impressions here.

HTC is also offering a cheaper take on the DROID with the Eris. The guys also discuss the almost instantly undesirable Motorola CLIQ before touching on the Samsung Moment.

Yeah, the PS3 is getting Netflix and the Palm Pixi is launching next month for $99, but this week we’ve got a boatload of Android stories, ranging from the announcement of Android 2.0 (aka Eclair), turn-by-turn GPS nav, and the first device to run it: the Motorola DROID. We’ve also got the scoop on the $99 HTC Eris, as well as hands-ons with the Motorola CLIQ and Samsung Moment. In other words, if you’re into Android, this week’s show is definitely for you.

Tired of hearing about Windows 7 yet? The opinions are the same here as they have been everywhere– it’s good. The guys get into the Apple updates and the iMacs seem to be the biggest win. Ryan laments that he would like to pick one up, but he just can’t make the move to a desktop.

The Barnes and Nobel Nook ebook reader has caught everyone off-guard. Ryan brings up a good point here about how amazing it is that a company like B&N, with no history with technology, can bring such a strong product to the market. The Nook seems to do everything the Kindle does, only better. Amazon has already shown that they are feeling the heat with their imediate $20 price drop on the international version of their device.

The guys quickly touch on the Sidekick situation before moving on to the Motorola Droid. It looks like it could be a strong competitor in the smartphone market, and possibly the first break-through handset running Android. Rounding out the cast is discussion about the Palm Pre expanding to Verizon.

Well, it happened: Windows 7 shipped! We’ll be spending some time there, as well as with some of the other huge goings on of the week, including Apple’s new 27-inch iMac, Magic Mouse, and unibody Macbook (among other devices we didn’t get a chance to touch on, like the Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server and new remote). Turns out this was also a big week for e-book readers, too, between the hot new Barnes & Noble nook and its surprisingly familiar counterpart, the Spring Design Alex. We’ve also got the latest on Danger’s big data loss (finally, some good news!), the Motorola Droid and the Pre coming to Verizon, and listener feedback — so listen up.

The Danger/Sidekick data loss situation has been the biggest story of the week. Danger holds all of Sidekick user’s data in the cloud and something went horribly wrong and they lost all of that data. This has called the idea of keeping all data in the cloud into question for many people. According to Danger, there still may be hope for user to retain their data if their phone has not been turned off or ran out of battery.

Barnes & Nobles is on the verge of announcing their competitor to Amazon’s Kindle and it is rumored to have a small, color LCD that is multi-touch enable for navigation. The guys commend them for bringing some innovation to this Kindle dominated market.

WiFi Direct has been announced and it looks to be a good competitor to Bluetooth. It can transfer data much faster than Bluetooth, but it currently has no profile infrastructure and requires a lot more power. Sony Vaio X details have come out and it is a slick machine at only .5 inches and 1.5 lbs. As always with Sony products, the sticking point here is its $1299 price. Peter got his hands on the Nokia Booklet 3G and share his thoughts about it as well.

It’s been a rough week for Sidekick users (although worth noting that after we recorded this week’s show, Microsoft announced wide-scale data recovery), but we’re looking forward to Barnes and Noble’s sexy new e-book reader which is rumored to have a multi-touch LCD. We also go into WiFi Direct this week, and catch up on the Sony Vaio X, Nokia Booklet 3G (which is hitting AT&T soon), the new Sonos ZonePlayer S5, as well as getting some hands-on time with Sprint‘s HTC Hero.

Windows Mobile 6.5, now known as Windows Phone is the first topic up this week and the guys don’t have too many good things to say about it. It is more of a stop-gap measure for Microsoft and we won’t see a true smartphone OS competitor from Microsoft until version 7. Ryan does give some credit for this being a move towards a more consumer-centric update.

Amazon has dropped the price of the Kindle 2 to $259 and introduced an international GSM version for $279. The extra $20 gives you the ability to download books outside of the State just as you would domestically. Dell has introduced a the luxury product priced Latitude Z600 and it is packed full of fresh features, so if you are looking to drop $2000+ on a Windows notebook this deserves a look.

There is a lot going on in the phone world including Google and Verizon teaming up to bring out some more Android phones, and AT&T has relented and now allows VoIP apps like Skype to work over 3G. Peter got his hands on HP’s new Envy 13, but for all of it’s great features, the touchpad proves to be a deal-breaker for him. The show closes out with the Archos A5S which has Ryan dismissing it at the first mention of “resistive touchscreen.”

We’re back! And apparently not a moment too soon, as the gadget world has been non-stop this week between the Windows phone (i.e. Windows Mobile 6.5) launch and the many devices it’s running on, like the HTC HD2 and Imagio. The Kindle 2 is also finally launching internationally, while the Qualcomm FLO TV Personal Television got real, Dell announced its seriously wireless Z600 and Google and Verizon finally hooked up to get more open. Palm opened up a little, too, with its new webOS app store policies, while AT&T announced that it’d be allowing VoIP over 3G. Finally, we’ve got hands on with the new HP Envy 13 and Archos A5S Android tablet.

The Zune HD is sweeping the tech world. Initial reviews have been quite positive with the gdgt guys praising it as well. The user interface continues to be hailed as highly usable and fresh. The OLED display handles blacks well and Ryan compliments the UI’s use of black as good design both aesthetically and in function to preserve battery life. The guys are planning a full Zune HD round-table episode soon, so look out for that.

The new iPod Touch comes under some more scrutiny here with some talk about the lack of a camera and the internal design that has space for a camera module. Ryan surmises that Apple probably pulled the plug on the camera months ago. The Archos 5 continues to come across pretty well. While it is far from a market-share grabbing product, it sounds quite solid and is interesting as an Android based tablet.

After quickly touching on the OnLive-like Spawn HD-720, the recently announced Modern Warfare 2 edition Xbox 360 with a 250Gb hard drive gets some attention. Microsoft says the larger hard drive will not be available separately, but Ryan says to look for a standalone to be available in a few months time. The PS3 sales round out the big topics before the guys touch on some smaller announcements and devices.

Another big week for gadgets around here, and we’ve finally got some sit-down time with the Zune HD — and so far the outlook is good. We’re also talking about the iPod touch 3rd-gen teardown that proves its missing camera, the Android-based Archos 5 media player, the new would-be Slingbox of video games, Spawn Labs’s Spawn HD-720, Microsoft’s Modern Warfare 2 edition Xbox 360, and the PS3 slim‘s 300% sales jump. We’ve got some laptops in the mix as well, With HP‘s new Envy 15 and Envy 13 workhorse machines, and its Mini 311 netbook, in addition to Lenovo‘s T400s and X200 with SimpleTap multi-touch.

Settle in for a lot of tech talk this week because this week’s episode clocks in at almost 2 hours. Jason Calacanis is on this week starting out the discussion with the start-up competition TechCrunch50, which kicks-off later today. The topic is talked about here, but the rumor is that we may hear something about the CrunchPad in mere hours.

The Apple event is one of the main focuses here and everyone has an opinion. No one can seem to get past the fact that a camera wasn’t put into the iPod Touch. This leads into a discussion about David Pogue and his inappropriate Apple fanboy nature as the main tech pundit of the New York Times. He was one of the few people to have a Q&A session with Steve Jobs after last Tuesday’s announcements and proved to not be able to press any issues. Steve Jobs himself is also a main topic here with him being heralded as “the Edison of our time.”

On the business-side of things, the group touches on Facebook’s apparent play towards becoming more Twitter-like with the introduction of Facebook Lite. Ebay’s selling of Skype also gets some time at the end of this one.

Apple’s iPod event on Tuesday turned out to be devoid of any big announcements. The addition of a video camera to the iPod nano is welcome, but not Earth-shattering. The storage bump and internal specs revision on the iPod touch are similarly uninspiring and they guys say as much here.

As seems to be the case every week, there was a lot of cellphone news this week lead by Palm’s announcement of the Pixi and Motorola’s Cliq. Ryan shares that after having some hands-on time with the Pixi, it feels distractingly sluggish in day-to-day type operation. The Cliq has the guys intrigued, but Motorola’s take on Android doesn’t seem to be as full featured as HTC’s Sense UI.

A few other cellphone related topics are touched upon before the guys move onto Toshiba’s JournE home media tablet that seems to be a little over ambitious. Dell’s tease of the next entry into their floundering Adamo line, the Adamo XPS, gets some skeptical discussion. Dell claims that the notebook will be 10mm(~.4 inch) thick so to get a real sense of what this product will be, we need to some some specs. Don’t be surprised if there is an Atom processor in there.

Fall’s officially upon us, and this holiday’s big gadgets were launching fast and furious this week. From Apple‘s big fall music event we’ve got the new iPod nano 5th-gen, now with a video camera, an upgraded, faster iPod touch 3rd-gen, and a special edition iPod shuffle 3rd-gen. There was also a slew of cellphone launches as well, most notably the Centro-like Palm Pixi; the Motorola Cliq, the Android device they’ve spent the last couple years on; HTC new’s low-end Tattoo, as well as the Hero‘s forthcoming US launch, courtesy of Sprint. That wasn’t it, though, because we also caught our first glimpse of the new Toshiba JournE home media tablet, a teaser of Dell‘s new Adamo XPS, and even an LCD-based e-book device from Asus dubbed — you guessed it — the Eee Reader.

The guys are moving through the news quick this week. The big news up front it Apple’s iPod event announced for September 9th. They just skim over a few predictions before talking about the Xbox 360′s recent price drop. They feel like the new price is a decent deal, but Ryan thinks it would make sense for Microsoft to keep the Pro around for a $50 up-sell.

With the release of the Zune HD, all other Zune models are slated to be discontinued. Could this be a direction we see Apple going after their event next week as well?

There is a lot of phone news in the middle here with Windows Mobile 6.5 being rebranded as Windows Phone and a few new handsets on the horizon. The HTC Touch2 has the guys interested in its inclusion of flash, but the screen is still resistive rather than capacitive. While Windows Mobile 6.5 is more finger-based, a stylus is still very necessary.

After touching on the sleek, 1.5 lbs Sony VAIO X and the extreme overpriced Nokia Booklet 3G, the guys talk about a new feature on gdgt that allows personalized gadget news feeds on the front page.

Well, Apple finally announced its fall iPod event for September 9th, Microsoft finally cut the Xbox 360′s price by $100, and the Zune HD may be Zune to end all other Zunes, but it’s also IFA week, which means the announcements are just getting started. The first of the Windows phones (i.e. Windows Mobile 6.5) was announced in Germany, HTC’s Touch2, along with the Sony VAIO X, Nokia Booklet 3G and Nokia N900 pricing (it’s not pretty), the capacitive-touch Nokia X6, Creative’s ZEN X-Fi2, Canon’s EOS 7D, the unfortunately timed Leica M9 and X1. Oh, and did we mention we launched a new gdgt homepage with a personalized activity stream? Because we did — listen in for more!

The first gadget up this week is Sony’s new Reader Daily Edition. This seems to be Sony’s answer to Amazon’s Kindle with a similar screen size and a persistent 3G connection via AT&T. The big differentiator here between Sony’s new reader and the Kindle on a hardware level is that the Reader Daily Edition has a touch screen. This, along with a more open approach to content procurement, which even includes the ability to “borrow” books from a library, may just tip the scales in Sony’s favor. It will retail for $399 and there is currently no release date.

Nokia is getting ready to launch their first foray into the netbook market with the Booklet 3G. It has all of the typical netbook specs with its Atom processor, but Peter passes along word that the price could be $600 or more. This doesn’t make much sense in a market segment that is all about driving prices down.

After briefly touching upon the tomorrow’s release of Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard, the guys move on to talk about Rhapsody’s recent submission of an iPhone app that would allow subscribers to listen to Rhapsody music on the go. With the need to have a $15/month subscription, this will probably only be attractive to current Rhapsody customer. With the recent issues Apple has had with Google Voice and the FCC, there really was no better time for them to try and get this approved though.

Dunno about you, but we definitely weren’t anticipating this week’s onslaught of big stories. Announced and/or launched this week were the newest (aspiring) Kindle-killer, Sony’s Reader Daily Edition; the Nokia Booklet 3G, Espoo’s first-ever PC; and, at long last, Apple‘s hotly anticipated Snow Leopard. But that wasn’t even all — turns out Qualcomm’s FLO TV Personal Television could be just around the corner, while the Rhapsody iPhone app might turn the tide for music on the iPhone (assuming it’s approved).

Gdgt weekly is fairly late this week with its normal release happening on Thursdays. Peter and Ryan are covering a lot of the same topics which the Engadget guys went over last week, but they have a few new observations to add to the discussion.

The PS3 slim starts off the conversation with Ryan having a lot of problems with Sony’s approach over the last few years. He is particularly unhappy about the PS3′s lack of any kind of PS2 backwards compatibility. Moving onto phone talk, the new Nokia N900 and Dell Mini 3i get the same sort of tepid response they did with the Engadget guys.

Canon and Sony have some new offerings in the camera department and it looks like the megapixel arms-race, as Peter puts it, may be about over. For years, companies have continued to arbitrarily bump up the megapixel count on their cameras while ignoring the actual image quality. This is bad for everyone as the result is a bad looking photo that is huge in file size. It’s nice to see this trend start to die.

Weirdly enough, a mouse gets some coverage this week with Logitech’s new Mouse MX series. The selling point here is that it can track on glass and it sounds like it works quite well.

Undoubtedly Sony’s PS3 Slim stole the show this week, but outings of the forthcoming Dell Mini 3i and Nokia N900 managed to keep things interesting — although perhaps not as much so as the new low-light optimized Canon PowerShot G11, PowerShot P90, and Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX1. We also got a pair similarly innovative products from Logitech, the Performance Mouse MX and Anywhere Mouse MX — optical mice capable of tracking on glass. Indeed, this summer is becoming generous with new essentials for our travel bag.

Xbox and the new Dashboard update are the big news of the week and the guys have been very pleased with it. The conversation is centered around the increased Netflix functionality and the recent announcement that the service will be console-exclusive to the 360. This seems to be a departure for Netflix who has traditionally tried to get their service on as many devices as possible.

The Zune HD is getting a lot of good press and some video of the device in action leaked from the gdgt launch party where it was shown publicly for the first time. With a rumored launch date of September 8th and $220 and $290 for the 16Gb and 32Gb versions respectively, Microsoft is set to undercut the iPod Touch.

The last topic of this week has Ryan unhappy about a not being able to get a matte display for his original unibody MacBook Pro. While it’s nice that it is now an option, even though it does come at a $50 premium, he argues that it should have been there from the beginning.

If any of the game consoles had a good week this week, it was surely Xbox, between the rollout of its latest big update (including full games on demand, and tons of fixes), to its hot new version of Netflix — which is now exclusive to Microsoft in the console space. We also dig into Logitech’s new flagship Harmony remote, the RF-enabled 900, as well as the Zune HD’s prospective price and release date (sorry, we recorded the show before the news broke), and Apple’s reintroduced matte display for the 15-inch MacBook Pro (sigh).
