Windows Weekly 97: Kumo As In Sumo

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1169 days ago

The idea of the Zune being used as a software platform for set-top boxes is somewhat perplexing.  The Zune experience in a small form factor is great, but blow that up to a huge TV display and maybe not so much.  With Apple somewhat struggling with the Apple TV is it really the time for Microsoft to go for it’s 4th foray into the living room? The guys are also talking about Microsoft’s new search endeavor codenamed Kumo.  It seems futile with Google so completely dominant, but Leo makes a good point that each percentage of the search...

Windows Weekly 96: The Quickening

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1176 days ago

The fact that Google has entered into the case against Microsoft over the bundling of Internet Explorer in Europe is somewhat interesting if not unsurprising after Mozilla did a while ago as well.  Apple can’t be too far behind since they have an interest in Safari. Paul has some rather scathing comments for the Safari 4 beta on Windows.  Safari 4 isn’t quite what people were expecting and actually seems to offer little in the user interface department that is really a step up.  In fact, the tab management has made things worse for...

Windows Weekly 95: Windows Mobile 6.5

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1183 days ago

If you haven’t heard enough bashing on Windows Mobile 6.5 yet you had better tune in here for another healthy dose.  The fact that anything bordering on new and improved won’t be out until mid 2010 is incredibly, bad. Some cool sales information from Valve on the effectiveness of price cuts and how that leads to huge spikes in sales.  They saw a 3000% increase in sales when they cut their game, Left 4 Dead’s price by half over last weekend.  That seems to show that prices for software is too high and that companies could actually...

Windows Weekly 94: Simplify, Simplify, Simplify

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1190 days ago

A lot of business talk on this episode. When will Microsoft announce the release date for Windows 7?  Many in businesses are still running XP and it seems like Microsoft wants to kind of skip past Vista, so why don’t the just let it out?  Feedback from the beta has been very good and it runs better than Vista so it’s seems like a great way to get individuals and businesses up to speed on the current release. Is there anyone in tech that doesn’t like the Kindle? Windows 7 Upgrade Program, Vista vs. 7, EU vs. Microsoft, Gmail,...

Windows Weekly 93: Flip, The Bird

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1197 days ago

Leo and Paul start out this episode talking about what Microsoft is really getting out of the beta for Windows 7.  Paul has some problems with the default settings and Leo is a little bit more positive on everything. As everyone else, the guys are not too pleased with the way Microsoft is handling the versions of Windows 7 they are planning to release. Windows 7, netbooks, UAC issue overkill, Microsoft Fix It, new Kindle, Google Ocean, and more. Runtime – 1:32:42 Link (Windows Weekly)

Windows Weekly 92: I’m Jonesin’

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1204 days ago

Windows 7 seems like it’s ready for release.  I’m sure there are many things under the hood that still need to be polished, but the consensus from the beta is that it seems to be in better shape than Vista was when it shipped. Internet Explorer 8 appears to be getting good impressions as well.  What is going on with Microsoft these days?  They are actually producing some quality stuff?  I’m glad to see it. New economics, Gmail goes offline, IE8 RC1, Windows 7 UAC, iTunes Plus, and more. Runtime – 1:20:39 Link (Windows...

Windows Weekly 91: Layoffs

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1211 days ago

The topic of the week here is the layoff cause by the nearing tragic state of the economy. The amount of layoffs that have occurred in the past few months have become rather disconcerting.  Sony, Microsoft and many others have announced layoffs.  The most troubling of which being the first ever at Google. If you were ever thinking about starting a personal venture this may be the time. Earnings, layoffs, the Inauguration, a MobileMe competitor, and more. Runtime – 1:08:03 Link (Windows Weekly)

Windows Weekly 90: The Last Beta

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1217 days ago

The Windows Beta seems to be going pretty well after an initial problem with server capacity.  The opinion of most seems to be very positive. Rumors of the Zune being discontinued are pretty rampant.  Leo and Paul seem to think this is not necessarily the case.  I personally don’t think this would be too good.  The Zune is no iPod killer (yet), but it provides some nice, healthy competition. Windows 7, Office 14, Zune rumors, MSDN, Software Wars, Roku, and more. Runtime – 50:28 Link (Windows Weekly)

Windows Weekly 89: Tripod, The Beta

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1225 days ago

This is an exciting one.  Leo, Paul and Mary-Jo are talking Macworld and CES.  Leo is the only one who attended either.  Paul and Mary-Jo insist that there really isn’t that much to get from actually being at these shows from a journalistic end.  I think the live-bloggers would disagree, but they did live-blog the live-blogs–  hmm. As much as I love Apple, I gotta say, the $.30 per song to upgrade bought songs to DRM-free is not cool at all.  Hopefully they will change that, I’m holding out on the upgrade. Microsoft fans...

Windows Weekly 88: Zune Takes A Holiday

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1232 days ago

Paul Thurrott is one of the biggest Microsoft pundits, but he always seems to have more criticisms than anything else.  Let’s call it tough love. The Zune thing that happened on December 31st was pretty crazy.  As any of you who have a Zune 30 and tried to use it a few days ago know, it simply wouldn’t work.  Apparently there is a bug in the Zune software that doesn’t handle leap years well.  The solution– wait until January 1st to use it.  Crazy.  Hopefully nobody needed their Zune for New Year’s party tunes. I...

TWiT 175: Highlights And Lowlifes 2008

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1237 days ago

We are lucky enough to get a clip show on this weeks episode of TWiT.  When it comes to a weekly show, making a clip show is incredibly time consuming and labor intensive so it great to get this one. Listening to all of these clips makes me glad I put TWiT in the top 5 that I put out a few days ago.  The discussion here is great with so many different points of view from so many people.  You absolutely will not find another tech podcast with a better roster than this. A selection of good and bad TWiT clips from 2008, featuring many of this year’s...

Windows Weekly 87: Big and Busty

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1252 days ago

A day late, but not one to miss a release without word, Leo and Paul and Paul are covering the Windows 7 leak and Zune phone rumors. The rumors of a Zune phone are actually interesting at this point.  A year ago no one would have cared, but the Zune software and overall experience have come so far that even the (sane) Apple followers would take notice.  Could a Zune phone be the kick that Microsoft need to be cool again?  Xbox 360 can’t do it for them on its own. A Windows 7 leak, the Zune phone rumors, and last minute geek gifts… Runtime...

Windows Weekly 86: Windows Live Wave Three

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Tech1260 days ago

Leo and Paul cover the many changes in the Windows world as we near the end of the year.  While Apple continues to gain market share Microsoft is slowly improving their products and services across their entire line.  I’m usually on board with thees guys, but how can they not like the new Xbox update… Windows 7, Windows Live, SP2, Hyper-V, Holiday Tech Gifts, and more. Windows 7 Beta in January Windows Live Wave 3 Services are out Service Pack 2 for Windows Vista, Server 2008 Hyper-V final is being added to Server Games for Windows...
