Tekzilla | Episode 101

by Jonathan Downin in Tech911 days ago

This week’s Techzilla starts out with Patrick answering a video question about eSATA and how to make sure it is ready to be as close to plug and play as possible.  Following this, Veronica interviews Tom Conrad, CTO of Pandora Radio.  He gives an overview of what Pandora is and how they are doing following some legal trouble over the past year. The real pull this week is Veronica’s look at the now in alpha, Jolicloud.  Jolicloud is a specialized Linux distribution that is built from the ground up to be a perfect OS for netbooks. ...

Engadget Podcast 154 – 07.11.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech944 days ago

The Google Chrome OS announcement has struck the guys as somewhat unsubstantial and showing a wrong approach.  Google didn’t release any details with the announcement and a good point is made here that if Microsoft did something like this, people would be having any of it.  The purely web-based approach isn’t impressing the Engadget crew either.  The overall feeling is that OSs need a radically new approach and this isn’t it. The guys go really in-depth on issues of Android and new handsets that are launching with the mobile...

Engadget Podcast 152 – 06.26.2009: The Day the Music Died 2

by Jonathan Downin in Tech959 days ago

The new Nokia N97 rules the first part of this week’s podcast.  The write-up over at Engadget is something pretty special, so if you have 20 minutes, go check that out.  Long story short, it’s okay, but don’t call it a comeback. The official pricing for Windows 7 has been released by Microsoft and there are so many things going wrong here that it’s hard to comprehend.  How is it that Microsoft can continually be so clueless about how they should market their products?  Vista was a flop, get people onto Windows 7 in a...

Tekzilla | Episode 93

by Jonathan Downin in Uncategorized967 days ago

First up, Patrick and Veronica have a great look at netbooks.  Veronica has a couple of on-hand units, one with Windows 7 and another that is a hankintoshed OS X equipped Dell mini 9.  They both look good, but with the new Intel CPUs coming up in December it may be best to wait if you can. There is a big segment about HDR photography, but there is not much focus on the camera side.  It is all about the software side here, so if you have the camera side down, you should be okay.  The camera side is a big deal though so don’t be too ready...

Windows Weekly 93: Flip, The Bird

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1099 days ago

Leo and Paul start out this episode talking about what Microsoft is really getting out of the beta for Windows 7.  Paul has some problems with the default settings and Leo is a little bit more positive on everything. As everyone else, the guys are not too pleased with the way Microsoft is handling the versions of Windows 7 they are planning to release. Windows 7, netbooks, UAC issue overkill, Microsoft Fix It, new Kindle, Google Ocean, and more. Runtime – 1:32:42 Link (Windows Weekly)

Engadget Podcast 128 – 01.11.2009: CES wrap-up

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1125 days ago

Wow, talk about a complete cavalcade of coverage– Engadget out-did themselves this CES. As you can see, they have done 5 podcasts over the past 5 days.  I don’t blame you if you didn’t listen to them all, but this is the wrap -up show, so if there is one you are going to listen to, make it this one. Well, it’s over — and what a week it’s been. Join Josh, Paul, Nilay and super-special guest Thomas Ricker as they wrap-up the big announcements and trends of CES 2009 — a little something about netbooks, a little...

Engadget Podcast 127 – 01.20.2009: CES day four

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1126 days ago

Ryan Block is sitting in on this one for a few minutes so we get a little bit of that old Engadget style. The adamo is really nothing too special.  The styling of the notebook looks interesting, but outside of that it’s pretty standard.  It’s good to see something other than a completely generic design come out of Dell though. More Palm Pre stuff and that still looks killer.  There is just so much going on with that phone. Things are definitely slowing down at the Las Vegas Convention Center. People are going to the airport. Booth...

gdgt weekly 019 – 01.08.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1128 days ago

After doing their first first gdgt live coverage, Ryan and Peter are talking about Macworld and CES this week.  The guys seem to be on the fence about the built-in, non-removable battery of the new MacBook Pro. Lot’s of talk about netbooks and ultra-portables here, which everyone loves.  The new Sony Viao P looks very interesting, but quite expensive.  I think everyone is still waiting for the perfect form factor netbook to show up. Oh, and there’s a mention of the possibility (or not) 17″ MacBook Pro’s matte screen trickling...

Engadget Podcast 124 – 01.07.2009: CES day one

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1129 days ago

Engadget kicks off their stretch of daily CES podcasts today by talking about Apple.  They don’t seem too impressed with the new iTunes tiered pricing. It’s really nice to hear discussion about Apple from people who cover the industry as whole and are not Apple-focused.  It really makes you realize how much things have changed with Apple getting this kind of coverage even if it’s not all positive.  It warms my heart a little. Why is no one talking about the potential of the new 17″ MacBook Pro’s non-removable battery...

gdgt weekly 018 – 01.01.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1135 days ago

Peter and Ryan have their frist show of the new year.  They kick it off by discussing a few details regarding the approaching release of the gdgt web site.  Though it will not be a blog, they will have live event coverage at live.gdgt.com, which will be great. Just to keep us in torturement, the guys are of course talking about CES and Macworld.  Just a few more days.  And of course this wouldn’t be an episode of gdgt without some netbook talk. CES and Macworld are right around the corner, which means this week we’ve got a moment...

Engadget Podcast 123 – 12.27.2008: Goodbye 2008 edition

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1140 days ago

A little late on the Macworld talk guys.  Some interesting insights here though.  Apple really is starting to become mainstream and is perceived much less as a niche market. The Adamo could be interesting.  The MacBook Air is great and netbooks are snowballing in popularity so this seems like it will be another exciting edition to the space.  CES and Macworld incoming. Yes, it’s that time of year again. The end of the year. This is the final podcast of 2008, but just the tip of the iceberg in the world of Engadget podcasting. Cuddle up...
