at1UP returns to it’s normal length this week, starting off the conversation with a couple stories from Jade talking about the Tokyo Game Show.  She drives the show in a direction a little different from than the bulk of TGS podcasts last week, because she talks about some of the landmarks around Tokyo, like Disneyland and the Studio Ghibli Museum. Uncharted 2 gets a bit of talk thanks to the recent episode of Game Night, hosted by Scooter Nguyen, Alice Liang, and Matt Leone.  Apparently, they played through the game with an unlockable skin...

The Geekbox: Episode 32

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc, Movies967 days ago

It is almost a full crew this week with Fitch being only being not sitting in since he is out at the Tokyo Game Show. This episode starts out with some TV talk about how Lost’s Michael Emerson Emmy win for playing the character on the show. Apparently he comes off as just being Ben in real life which is somewhat disconcerting if you know the character. Mike has been getting deep into Dexter which our own Jon Cole is a big fan of. X-men and Syfy talk lead into a discussion about Batman: Arkham Asylum. Spoilers start at the 36:00 mark so be...

This is an extra long and extra fun episode of at1UP. Scooter and Tina join the skeleton crew of Mike and Travis and it’s a great mix. The latest 1UP cover story is focused on No More Heroes 2. Scooter had a chance to interview Developer Suda 51 about the game a procured some nice swag which Tina will be giving away in an upcoming contest. Dead Space Extraction, which is tonight’s 1UP Game Night game, starts a hilarious discussion about franchises that could have good on-rails entries. A lot of topics are covered this week, but as usual,...

At1UP starts with all PAX talk.  Mike and Jade attended this year’s expo and they have plenty of stories to tell.  It sounds like most of the fan experiences were great outside of some 1UP/Tina haters.  1UP seems to be the only big site that is interested in meeting fans and making their readers/listeners feel like a part of the community with the kind of presence they had at PAX, so way to go 1UP. With the focus being on the PAX experience, there really isn’t too much actual game talk here, but that shouldn’t be a surprise...

The Geekbox: Episode 30

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc989 days ago

It’s a toned-down Geekbox this week with Karen out for her husbands birthday and Ryan Scott sick.  Everyone is predictably playing Batman and enjoying it.  Ryan talks about all the big PAX plans and he has included all the times and places for the proceeding in the post for this week’s episode. Disney’s acquisition of Marvel sparks a lot of conversation, but not too many insights.  There is some worry about what Disney will do with Marvel and the crew throws around the idea of Pixar doing animated Marvel movies.  Ryan Higgins...

It’s an issue packed show this week with PAX plans starting the discussion.  The crew has also put together another 1UP cover story on DeathSpank.  If you haven’t heard of the game, you are not alone.  There are chicken’s with teeth in the art though, so go check it out. The controversy of Kurt Cobain takes center stage with Shirk’s cocktail napkin rant this week.  While he seems to not being digging the fact that he is in the game, everyone else doesn’t really mind.  The main problem seems to be that his model...

The Geekbox: Episode 29

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc995 days ago

As you would probably expect, a big chunk of this week’s Geekbox is all about Blizzcon.  With the crew usually spending a lot of time on movies and comics, it’s nice to hear a lot of game-centric talk every once in a while. Ryan Higgins starts this one out talking about his lees than ideal DirectTV PPV Blizzcon experience.  Fortunately, Karen and Ryan were actually at the event so they share their first-hand takes.  It sounds like everyone enjoyed the StarCraft tournaments with the sportscast-style live play-by-play commentary. ...

A new feature that covers wanted sequels starts out this week’s episode.  The feature is somewhat interesting, but the real draw is the box art that Mike and co. whipped up for the picks.  There are some classic, and some not so classic, series represented there, so check it out and see if they cover the games on your wish list. Metroid: Prime Trilogy is out and Jade is talking about her love for the series and giving a few impressions of the new reworked Wii editions.  With the release of Batman Arkham Asylum, the comic-loving crew took...

Weirdly enough, one of the least game focused podcasts is one of the first to be out in time to talk about the newly announced PS3 Slim.  While everyone welcomes the smaller design and price drop, Mike is the only one with plans to purchase it.  Sony better hope that this isn’t how it will be received on the mass market level. Justin Haywald is on again this week to talk some more about Professor Layton and happy with the new “hamster training” aspect of the game– maybe you just have to play it to appreciate it.  Mike...

The Geekbox: Episode 27

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc, Movies1009 days ago

G.I. Joe starts this one out with a luke-warm reception.  This leads into a discussion on ’80s cartoons and Mike flexes some serious ’80s nerd knowledge by recalling TigerSharks and SilverHawks. The topic of internet advertisements come up with Ryan mentioning the Evony ads that have been appearing on geekbox.net.  You may have seen them on CastMedium as well and they are egregiously sexualized for no apparent reason.  PopCap recently did a parody of these ads that features a “sexy” zombie lady. After Karen gives Civilization...

This week’s 1UP cover story is Uncharted 2 and the 1st installment is titled “10 Things You Don’t Know“.  It’s cool to see that even with the demise of so many gaming magazines that the idea of a cover story is living on, complete with some nice art. It is the Gameboy’s 20th anniversary and 1UP is celebrating it with a feature that chronicles its long history.  It is a full 6 page affair, so you should be able to get your Gameboy fix there. Mike saw G.I. Joe over the weekend and enjoyed it due to his low expectations,...

The Geekbox: Episode 26

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc1017 days ago

First up this week is a welcome to Mike Cruz as the new regular “special guest” of the podcast and an introduction to Ryan Higgin’s friends who have a band called “God of Shamisen.”  They are a rock group with a member who plays the traditional Japanese instrument, the shamisen, as the core of the group. MMOs get a whole lot of discussion time with Ryan Higgins talking about the new World of Warcraft patch that came out yesterday.  They then move onto the Matrix Online, which nobody played, and Karen shares some of...

It’s “Shirk Week” this week at 1UP.  In honor of Discovery’s Shark Week, Mike Cruz and Co. are pitting sharks’ vicious rule of the ocean against Matt Shirk’s semi-informed views on random topics.  This match-up really makes no sense (since it is not a competition of any sort, and we made it up), but you can follow the progress on the at1UP blog page over at 1UP. It wouldn’t be an episode of at1UP without some Zombie discussion.  This week the crew discusses a 1UP user-pitched zombie MMO.  With zombies’...

The first big piece of news this week is the new 1UP front page.  It looks like 1UP is trying to showcase new additions to the site and provide a more time-line like content showcase that is akin to a blog in some ways.  It’s definitely a step in the right direction so congrats to the people who worked on this. Zombie coffee shops anyone?  Who knows what it means, but come up with a good name for one, shoot it off to the at1UP crew and you could find yourself walking down the street in an almost new Fallout 3 T-shirt. The whole aftershow...

Yes, that’s me.  Mike asked me to join in on the podcast this week and I was more than happy to oblige.  I talk a bit about CastMedium and also touch on the podcast space in general. After my ramblings, the group moves on to more pressing issues such as the zombie/nazi epic, Dead Snow.  If only the characters involved knew the zombies wanted gold from the beginning. Mike had a bad run-in with Taco Bell on Sunday and he is happy to share the sequence of events here. This was my first guest appearance, so be sure to let me know what you think...
