Player One Podcast – Episode 221 (01/17/11) – Still Enjoying Last Year’s Games

by Ross Adams in Games389 days ago

With no big releases to speak of so far this year the Player One guys are mostly focusing on talking about games from the end of last year and beyond. Phil starts off by talking about Raskulls, a game from Halfbrick that incorporates a Mr Driller style of gameplay, so it’s no real surprise he loves it. He does say his Mr Driller experience does mean he gets thrown off by the speedy aspect of Raskulls gameplay. Sewart has been playing Donkey Kong Country Returns and was finding it hard to put it down, he’s really enjoying the variety...

Mobcast 78: Double Fine’s Tim Schafer and Tasha Harris

by Alex Martin in Games459 days ago

This week, Shoe and Brett host Tim Schafer and Tasha Harris of Double Fine. Tasha was the Lead Designer on recent downloadable RPG Costume Quest, and Tim is President of the studio that developed that, Brütal Legend, and Psychonauts. As they have two comedians in, Shoe asks if comedic developers should ever make serious games. It’s a false dichotomy, though — plenty of “serious” games have jokes, and Psychonauts explored some dark themes. Tasha demonstrates that point by pointing to Limbo as the last game that made her laugh....

The Geekbox: Episode 86

by Jon Cole in Games, Movies490 days ago

Justin is back yet again in Karen’s absence and fits in more and more each week. After breezing through Minecraft talk and a little listener feedback on the game, the Geekbox crew revisits Limbo. The XBLA title’s story is under the microscope mostly due to the unique nature with which it’s told, namely through context and without much explanation. The Nintendo 3DS garners a bit of excitement, especially with the new tech in the hardware and a strong launch software opening. The delay of DC Universe Online being announced soon after...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 206

by Jon Cole in Games505 days ago

Shawn Andrich and Sean Sands are joined by CastMedium’s own Jonathan Downin for this week’s show, opening things up with some discussion of Vindictus. The game takes a Guild Wars-esque approach in offering MMO-like hub towns/instanced gameplay zones and implants it into a hack-and-slash action game formula. The business model isn’t totally clear, but Shawn recommends people give this free game a go. Sean briefly gets into his time with the latest release of Plants vs Zombies and some of the reasons you might consider buying it...

Game Scoop! Podcast: The Best 58 Minutes of Your Life

by Peter Barta in Games531 days ago

The cast starts out with some stories from Germany as Daemon shares his experiences at and around Gamescom.  Though extra-curricular activities occupy a good deal of the conversation, they bring it back around to what was great about the con itself.  BioShock Infinite appears to have been the real gem, with a demo that seemed too good to be true. After briefly discussing live action trailers for video games, Mafia II gets a look.  The group sees this game pretty clearly as good, but not amazing (less enthusiastic than some other sites and reviewers). The...

The Totally Rad Show – Episode 177 Gerks and Needs

by Ross Adams in Games, Movies549 days ago

The Other Guys is the movie this week on TRS, while all 3 enjoyed it to a certain extent they definetly had their issues with it. Some of the comedy fell a little flat, Dan and Alex also comment that they are ready for Will Ferral to step up his comedy beyond his same old schtick. The guys also discuss two upcoming movies, both titled Gravity. The first is from director Alfonso Cuarón and will star Robert Downey Jr, while the second will be directed by Louis Leterrier and will evolve Earth in zero g. They discuss which film most appeals to them...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 199

by Jon Cole in Games555 days ago

The World of Warcraft speaking embargo drops on this episode of the Conference Call, starting things off with Cataclysm beta talk. It’s quickly established that this game is more of a sequel than an expansion, as far as new features and structure is concerned. Before too long, they hold back a little, saying that it’s likely they’ll be talking about WoW for months to come. Staying on the Blizzard train, the biggest game of the week is clearly Starcraft II. Julian brings up the well-worn topic of having a multiple Starcraft campaigns...

Player One Podcast – Episode 197 (08/02/10) – They Call Him Doctor

by Ross Adams in Games557 days ago

After the usual opening 5 minutes of tangents, mostly related to last weeks Phil and CJ-less show, it’s onto game talk. Well almost, as CJ and Greg Sewart discuss Playstaion Plus which they both subscribed too. They both seem pleased with the service, while the understand the subscription nature makes the “free” games a bit of an off prospect they think they’re getting good value for the money. On the subject of value the discussion moves to the announcent of Kinect’s pricing which has instantly meant no one of the...

Rebel FM Episode 70 – 07/30/10

by Alex Martin in Games559 days ago

StarCraft 2 commands the first segment, with Ryan O’Donnell (Area 5) joining the regular crew. Everyone except Tyler has played and enjoyed it and they have little but praise for the Mass Effect-like breaks between missions, the accessibility, and the ambient occlusion. After a break, they talk about the other games they’ve been playing recently. Ryan’s played a handful of iPad and iPod games — Osmos HD, Monkey Island 2, Helsing’s Fire, Aqua Moto Racing, and Archetype — all of which sound like they’re worth...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 198

by Jon Cole in Games561 days ago

Gamers with Jobs is back, Cory is hosting, and the Sands/Andrich duo are noticeably absent.  Limbo starts things off and Allen lays out his very positive impressions after a seemingly excessive two playthroughs.  The guys also discuss the atmospheric sound design and slightly disturbing art style before moving on. After briefly hitting on the ultra-cheap Doctor Who Adventures, Lara talks about her time with Dragon Quest 9, which clearly left a good impression on her.  Following up her review of DQ8 from the past, she feels that this iteration...

Karen is back and the show starts with talk of DeathSpank. Ryan S.is loving it, but Karen is just getting through it. Next up is Limbo and the inevitable price discussion ensues. by Jonathan Downin in Games565 days ago

Episode 10 is here sooner than expected with Limbo talk up front. The guys have a lot of good things to say about the game with the bulk of the praise expressed for the games incredible atmosphere. The guys relate the feeling the game conveys to that of exploring when they were kids. Next up is Valve’s Alien Swarm that was recently released for free. Chris also share some anecdotes about his time with the Nasa backed, and also free, Moon Base Alpha. After a lengthy discussion about simulation games and who plays them, the guys get into the...

Rebel FM Episode 69 – 07/22/10

by Alex Martin in Games566 days ago

Jim Reilly (IGN) joins Anthony, Arthur, Matt, and Tyler on the podcast too classy to for its 69th episode to be a source of amusement. Anthony kicks it off with Darkstar One. It’s a space combat sim with some trading and a lot of boring grinding. He’s enjoying grinding in DeathSpank though. Gravity Crash is a brightly colored, 2D space shooter he’s playing on the PSP. He has the low-down on Darkspore too — it’s a Diabolo clone with less customizability than the original Spore. Jim, a quiet guy, brings sounds down on...

CastMedium Podcast 044 – 07.20.10

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Movies, Tech571 days ago

It’s another glorious episode of the podcast– and it’s a good one. DeathSpank’s debut and Limbo’s kick-off of the XBLA Summer of Arcade are up first. If you aren’t up on Limbo, as always, the Giant Bomb Quick Look is a good primer. In tech, we spend a good amount of time on the state of iPhone 4 after the mini ‘Jobsnote‘ last Friday. Spoiler: None of us are too happy. We are happy about the overview of Windows Phone 7 that hit the tech sites recently though, and Erik is in a holding pattern for its...
