Rebel FM Episode 14

by Jonathan Downin in Games1127 days ago

After a week’s absence the Rebel FM guys are back and have a lot to talk about. Sad story of the good guys getting punished for being more than generous this week.  Stardock released Demigod and was inundated by pirated copies bringing down their servers causing reviews to be delayed.  Brad Wardell, Stardock’s president and CEO, never puts DRM on their games and was rewarded with over 100,000 copies being pirated upon release. It must be a slow time for game releases as Fallout 3 has been coming up again more recently.  Tyler is on...

Command Prompt Podcast, Episode 39

by Jonathan Downin in Games1165 days ago

Jason had a chance to visit Valve last week.  While there he got a chance to play the soon to be released free downloadable content for Left 4 Dead which contains a new mode, “survival.”  Whereas a typical round lasts around an hour or more, rounds in the new survival game type usually go no longer than 10 minutes.  The mode just throws zombies at you until you are dead similar to “Horde mode” in Gears of War 2. The topic of easier to get into versus complicated games is covered in the mail section and Jason pours on some...

Xbox 360 Fancast 106 — Naughty Words

by Jonathan Downin in Games1173 days ago

If you are not watching Joystiq Xbox’s XBLA in brief videos you should be.  Ever wondered if you should spend your hard-earned MS secret points on the week’s XBLA release?  That’s what this is for.  This week Richard covers Exit 2 and it’s far from great.  It is a weekly feature and you can subscribe via iTunes. The undying issue of Resident Evil 5s control mechanic rears its head here again.  This topic isn’t going away and you can count on it being a key point in reviews.  But with over 4 million downloads of...

Xbox 360 Fancast 104 — Who Watches the Fancasters?

by Jonathan Downin in Games1187 days ago

Dustin, Dustin, Dustin…  Such an endearingly weird character you are.  Richard is the guy who keeps it all together, but Dustin is really the guy that keeps you coming back. The topic of the absolutely overextended state of Guitar Hero is talked about here.  Seriously Activision, take a cue from the Rock Band guys.  The game should be a platform us to deliver downloadable content.  Don’t make us a buy a new base game 17 times every year. Nice Sonic rant from Xav at the 50 minute mark. The unstoppable Xbox 360 Fancast is back yet...

Game Scoop! Podcast, Episode 109

by Jonathan Downin in Games1190 days ago

Greg Miller is back! The Resident Evil racism topic just won’t go away.  In fact, the guys here are predicting that this will go mainstream in the news with the release of the game.  I have to agree.  Just look at what happened with Mass Effect. Having played a lot of BeatMania in my time the prospect of a DJ Hero is pretty exciting.  Better start saving up for another peripheral laden game pack. There is a fiery discussion about the existence of a Lego Universe at the 34 min mark. While many publishers struggle in the current economic...

Three Red Lights, Episode 105

by Jonathan Downin in Games1192 days ago

The fact that Valve got Microsoft to let them release free DLC for Left 4 Dead is really great.  Microsoft has traditionally been very against this, but hopefully they are learning to let developers make the call. The talk of Mass Effect reminds me of how great that game is.  Sure, there were some small problems and it was a bit glitchy at times, but these are things that are likely to be fixed in a sequel.  Hopefully we see a bit more polish on the graphics now that it is almost 2 years later though. Discussing story in relation to Gears of...

Giant Bombcast 02-10-2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1193 days ago

If there are two things the Giant Bomb crew love, they are achievement points and Fable II.  I played plenty of Fable II, but these guys are on a whole other level.  Still have to go back and get those aggravating gargoyles. So many great games came out last year and hearing talk about Fallout 3 makes me want to go back to that game.  I finished the story mode, but there is so much more to do.  Unfortunately the PS3 version isn’t getting any DLC.  Maybe biting the bullet and re-buying it on PC wouldn’t be such a bad idea. Almost...

The Totally Rad Show | Episode 99 – Burp-Sneeze

by Jonathan Downin in Games1193 days ago

Afternoon Delight! There is a big announcement at the end of this week’s show.  Steve, the amazing editor of the show, has taken a job and will no longer be working on the show.  The boys are looking for someone to take his place so if you think you are up to it and are in LA you can shoot an email to them at [email protected] A lot of things that missed the mark in this episode.  Fanboys, not so funny; Push, not so entertaining; Afro Samurai, beautiful, but not so fun. What do 3 fanboys think of Fanboys? Does Push pull is in? Is...

Xbox 360 Fancast 103: Wars (of the Halo variety)

by Jonathan Downin in Games1193 days ago

The Halo Wars cutscenes sound like a departure from the way the story is handled in previous Halo titles– in a good way.  The guys are only talking in detail about the gameplay, no story stuff here.  It sounds like they are really liking it, especially the controls, and that is saying a lot for a game like this on console.  This looks to be a very action centered RTS, sounds right seeing as this is Halo. More universal dislike for the controls of Resident Evil 5.  The survival horror has really evolved since RE4.  I am currently playing...

Game Scoop! Podcast, Episode 107

by Jonathan Downin in Games1204 days ago

The idea of extra content for Fallout 3 is pretty exciting in Theory, but it sounds like they are not really going to deliver, epecially at $10 each.  Just give us a full expansion. Does anyone really want to play Fable II on PC?  It seems like a TV and couch game to me.  Remove a controller from the equation and I just don’t see the point.  Thankfully you can use a 360 controller on the PC, but still, not ideal to me. NPDs are discussed in depth here with what the lack of digital download numbers means for true understanding about what...

CO-OP 0001: Reflection Part 2

by Jonathan Downin in Games1204 days ago

The second part of the first episode of CO-OP is up!  The amount of work that has gone into this is pretty amazing.  It’s hard to imagine how things are just going to get better from here as they get the resources and equipment they need. If you played many games this year you can rest assured that a few of those are going to be mentioned here.  Left 4 Dead seems to be the game that everyone loves. If you want this show to go on then I suggest you go and Digg the story at the link below or if you are so inclined leave them a donation on...

Xbox 360 Fancast 101: Brave New World

by Jonathan Downin in Games1207 days ago

And the transition is complete.  If you haven’t seen it yet, the new Joystiq has launched and Xbox 360 Fanboy now falls under Joystiq as the Xbox 360 “spoke.”  The new site design is great and feels fresh.  Don’t worry though, the fancast isn’t changing. The guys are pouring on some love for The Maw.  It’s seems a bit old-school, but is being praised for it’s nice graphics and simple, yet fun gameplay.  Sounds like a good buy for $10 on XBLA. Maxim rates 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand higher than Street...

Joystiq Podcast 081 – Competent edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1218 days ago

Here we are, getting a late start on the Friday casts.  It’s not you Joystiq, it’s me. Wii Play is the best selling game of ’08!  Depressing.  It is really good to see Left 4 Dead selling so well though.  Such a great and innovative game deserves to do well.  Here’s a tip people: support good games by buying them and we will probably get more. Quote of the cast:  “The Price Is Right; it’s the same thing– Drew Carry is fat and Bob Barker was old.”  -Justin McElroy Well, we’re back with...

The Totally Rad Show | Episode 95 – Exacerbated

by Jonathan Downin in Games1221 days ago

The TRS boys are bringing us their best of 2008 with this episode taped in front of a live audience.  Exciting stuff. With all that is happening with 1UP these days I would love to see Jeff Cannata get in with some of those guys and gals on a new show, of course continuing TRS as well. Totally Rad Awards 2008! Dark Knight, The Wrestler, Wrath of the Lich King, Lost, Iron Man, Dr. Horrible, and much more! Runtime – 1:04:33 Link (The Totally Rad Show)

Xbox 360 Fancast 098 — New Year’s Fanmail

by Jonathan Downin in Games1229 days ago

As usual, while others are still on holiday the fancast guys are back with a show.  Xav is absent on this one which is just about an every other show thing at this point. Left 4 Dead seems to have some real staying power.  I have yet to give it a go, but it seems like I am long overdue.  The team-work approach sounds amazing, but I can’t imagine this is catching on with the typical Halo and Call of Duty crowd. I did give Braid a try and that is really– unique.  Nothing quite like it out there.  Definitely worth a try if you like...
