It’s back to the classic group of TWiTs this week with Patrick Norton and Kevin Rose. Google’s Sidewiki project is not getting a positive response from Leo. He argues that this is bad for site owners as they lose control of the discussion around their content. USB 3.0 and Intel’s Light Peak lead into a discussion about SSDs and Leo shares his experience. Tablet talk also sneaks in with Courier and the mythical Apple tablet.

Kevin talks about the code-share Digg has with Facebook using the open source project Casandra. Since Twitter is in Kevin’s realm of social networks, Leo throws it to him to talk about ad effectiveness, why Google might want to be them and where the service needs to go next. Kevin points out that many of less tech savvy people are Twitter refer to the service as their “web site.” This is an extremely interesting and insightful tidbit.

G4 has contacted Leo about wanting to create a video site that would feature all of the old Tech TV video. Kevin says that G4 had a Tech TV clip he linked to last week removed from YouTube and this may be why. Even though many tech subjects don’t age well, there is still some content that would be relevant today, hopefully this happens.

Diggnation has been going crazy with the live shows recently and this week’s episode was shot live in Arizona. Things get a little rowdy with the Go Daddy girls and Kevin hits a ball with a golf club right at an audience member. No one was hurt and the person actually caught the incident on video with the ball hitting the camera. Kevin, for future reference, don’t hit balls with golf clubs at people.

Starting out the stories this week is the new Chevy Volt which is due to debut in 2011 at a claimed 230 miles per gallon– not gonna happen. Next are some pictures that have been floating around the net for a while of a Bengali White Tiger swimming, and they are terrifying. As if water wasn’t scary enough with all the sharks and pirhannas out there, now we have to content with man-eating mammals in water too.

The guys touch on a story that has burglars giving tips about what to do to decrease your risk of being a target before moving onto the PS3 Slim announcement. Kevin is not a fan of the PS3 and says that Sony has failed with it, but he has high hopes for the PS4. The last story this week is the 2009 Sauna World Championships, and yes, you did read that correctly.

Diggnation | Episode 216 – Hippie Glenn Slurs

This episode was recorded last week while Alex and Kevin were in Las Vegas for their live show. It’s strange, but everyone seems a little more drunk here than during the live show, which was actually taped after this one.

First up this week is an unfortunate example of why you kids should be careful while having fun. The next story showcases just how untouchable Megan Fox is when even Seth Rogen can’t sneak in a peck on the cheek. Kevin feels the pain on this one, but Alex has other preferrences.

High schoolers play a big part in the news this week with one kid figuring out how to decompose a plastic bag in 3 months and another suing Amazon over the 1984 Kindle debacle. Rounding out the stories is that of Bill Clinton negotiating the release of 2 journalists from detention in North Korea.

Debauchery ensues as Kevin & Alex discuss: Kid owned by Mentos and Coke bottle, Seth Rogan rejected by Megan Fox, Decompose plastic in 3 months, High school kid sues Amazon.com over Kindle, and Bill Clinton brings U.S. journalists home.

First story up this week is about a bikini that is being pitched as a good post-breakup revenge tool because it disintegrates seconds after hitting water. This sounds all well and good, but how is this plausibly going to work? You either have to anticipate the bad breakup and gift it before or somehow gift it after the bad breakup. This is not going to happen either way.

The biggest real tech news of this episode has the guys discussing Yahoo and its partnership with Microsoft to drop their own search technology and transplant it with Bing. This basically means that even though you search from Yahoo.com, what you are actually getting is Bing powered search results. Microsoft is now the only potential competition to Google with a 30% total search market share.

Ashton Kutcher, rumored new friend of Kevin, makes an appearance near the end to promote his new movie, Spread. As with most celebrity Diggnation appearances, this is a little awkward, but still somewhat cool.

Alex and Kevin are live in Las Vegas at the Palms Casino Resort. Alex has some disturbing thoughts.

The first story is one that falls in the “funny but it shouldn’t be” category. A nursing home in Germany came up with the idea of installing a fake bus stop outside the building to help keep patients from running away. It is actually a rather human and sweet way to deal with a tough situation if you read the story.

Microsoft sells the full version of its Office suit for the equivalent of $29 in China. Pirating software is such a common phenomena in the country that offering products at an extremely low price is the only way to get the public to buy legitimate copies. Considering the price is well over $300 in the US for an equivalent package, some are saying Americans should pirate too so the prices will go down in the States as well.

Your body is glowing, right now. Kevin knew it all along.

If you were saddened by the recent news that Comedy Central was not planning to bring the original voice cast of Futurama back due to budgetary reasons, you will be happy with this first story. Apparently, John DiMaggio, voice of Bender and others, was at the Futurama Comic-Con panel and hinted that things will probably work out in bringing the original cast back.

The trailer for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland has been released and it looks like– Alice in Wonderland directed by Tim Burton. The guys have some reservations, and rightfully so. Burton has an amazing sense of design and style in his movies, but that just isn’t enough as was have seen with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Did you know that there are tons of beer and wine related products with the name Prager in their brands? Well, there are, and Kevin and Alex seem more excited about that fact than Prager himself. He does own many of them already though, so it’s somewhat understandable. But would you buy a ton of stuff just because it had your last name on it somewhere?

Diggnation | Episode 212 – WWKAD: What Would Kevin And Alex Do?

The first story up front here is the Nazi stealth fighter. As Kevin and Alex cover, this was basically an American stealth bomber 20 years before its inception. It is pretty amazing to see how hostory could have been so different with just a few tweaks.

Tim Burton has been at the forefront of visual design in films for the past 15 years and now he is putting his spin on Alice in Wonderland. The concept art alone shows that this movie is starting in the right place. This is the kind of stuff we wish would show up in game design.

Kevin and Alex start to get rather deep with their discussion on religion. The topic is somewhat unfairly skewed towards the anti-Christian point of view initially, but Kevin starts to lean the other way throughout the discussion. See and interpret what you like in this discussion.

TWiT 204: Taste Like Dirt

Leo has been off in China for the past 2 weeks, but he is back with a small and tight group this week. Kevin Rose was on a completely unrelated China trip last week so be ready for some China talk between the two.

Google’s Chrome OS is being faced with more criticism as time goes by. Bill Gates is the latest to come out and discount the announcement as unexciting. The prevailing opinion is that with nothing to show Google will probably deliver nothing more than a stripped down linux distribution level piece of software.

The rumors of Amazon buying Netflix is big news, not just for us consumers, but for the likes of Apple as well. If this happens it may just put Amazon in a viable position to challenge Apple and iTunes.

Twitter was hacked a few days ago and TechCrunch took it upon themselves to put out a lot of their internal information. The guys have more than a few opinions on how this happened and how Tech Crunch handled the situation.

Extra! Extra! Read all about it. JK Rowling is a woman! At least it was news to Kevin. Also, he says he could write a “wizard book.”

The story about the girl diagnosing herself is either really cool or extremely depressing. Either way, good for her.

This episode was obviously taped a few weeks ago since the news is Facebook vanity URLs and the story of Megan Fox missing a kid trying to give her a rose. Hopefully you got your Facebook address by now or what you want is probably gone.

JK Rowling gets sued, Teen diagnoses her own disease, Facebook URLs and Megan Fox is Depressingly hot.

Kids these days. More stories about high schoolers changing up the whole system for those of us that were born in the early 1900s.

Microsoft’s Bing has proven to be a quite capable search engine. This may just be the first Google competitor that we have seen. The chance of a mass exodus to Bing is unthinkable, but if it proves to be consistently better, Google may have to make some changes. Remember, competition is always good for innovation.

More relationship advice in this one. Kevin always has good advice, but it’s a little weird that out of the 2 of them, Alex is the one who is engaged and Kevin is single.

Apparently, a 14 year old Australian boy found himself in a predicament when a fish went somewhere he didn’t mean for it to go. Well, maybe he meant for it to go there, but the real problem was when he didn’t want it there any more.

The guys get into a discussion about jealousy and how they each handle it after a story about a guy who found out his wife was cheating on him when seeing he in a video he procured.

Howard String has some crazy things to say about the internet and it baffles Kevin. It really is strange when you hear heads of huge companies like Sony, who will become ever more dependent on the internet, saying that “nothing good comes out of it.”

Fish is found in boy’s penis, wife’s affair is found out through porn and the CEO of Sony Pictures hates the internet.

There is a new app for the iPhone/iPod Touch named Red Lazer that scans barcodes much like an application that was available for the G1 at launch, The problem with Red Lazer is that it doesn’t really work. The real problem is the camera in the iPhone doesn’t support short focus. Hopefully this will be fixed with a hardware revision at WWDC.

The guys are talking about the PS3 slim leak and subsequent cease and desist. Kevin calls it as being a deliberate hype builder. Again, we’ll have to to wait until next week’s E3 to see if Sony is going to announce it.

The new Star Trek is out and almost universally loved, much like the original Star Wars. This is not surprising as a video on College Humor points out how identical the plots are.

Robots that bring you beer, lasers that scan your products, PS3 Slim photos leak, the smartest bra in the World and Star Trek rips off Star Wars.

We get some really great stories this week starting out with one about ATM scams. If you aren’t aware, ATM scammers have been attaching external card readers to standard ATMs to steal card information and PINs. Be careful using those machines.

There has been a serious problem with a naked wizard at Coachella and the police were not too pleased. They proceeded to tazer the “wizard” with a group of bystanders around. See what Kevin and Alex have to say about the incident.

Coming out of an unfortunate story about a sexual incident in a car comes a discussion on which body parts Kevin and Alex would choose to keep if they had to lose one. It all sounds pretty horrible.

It seems to be coincidence that Hippie Glen and Pregger are not around this week and we get an unusually long show.

Disney has bought a 30% stake in Hulu and that means that Hulu now has content from almost every major network. Kevin says that this confirms complete domination by Hulu and he is probably right. It is now next to impossible for any competitor to catch up without a completely innovative idea.

Wolverine did VERY well at the box office during it’s opening weekend in spite of being leaked months and months earlier. It make not prove that piracy works, but it certainly is some strong evidence that it doesn’t hurt.

Also, if you haven’t heard yet, you can now go pick up the Windows 7 Release Candidate. It is a free and won’t deactivate until June of 2010.

The boys start out on an unusually strait-forward and serious story this week about Google’s experiments with Captcha methods. If you aren’t familiar with Captcha it is the system that verifies that you are a human when you enter a comment or signup for something on a website and have to enter some often indecipherable words. Google new method looks like a nice change.

The guys go on to talk about a story that covers some cool YouTube url tricks that can help you customize your YouTube experience whether you are on YouTube.com or embedding YouTube files on a web page. Tricks include looping, removing related videos, embedding HQ and HD video and many more.

The last story is why we watch Diggnation, pictures of fast food items compared to their real counterparts. They look way worse, but still surprising appetizing.
