Joystiq Podcast 99.75 – Lettuce smokers edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1057 days ago

The guys have procured a soundboard, and in typical Joystiq fashion they have taken something that is completely played out and made it funny again.  There is one exception, Kindergarten Cop sound bytes, not yet funny again.  Give it a couple more years. A lot of talk about the mergers and acquisitions going on in the game industry lately.  Chris, with his undying love for id, interviewed John Carmack about the Zenimax deal and there are some interesting tidbits in there so go check it out. Rounding out the show is the guys talking about a Q&A...

Joystiq Podcast 099 – Post-E3 edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1071 days ago

E3 episode wrap-up has arrived.  Joystiq had a lo of great coverage of E3 this year and they are talking about their thoughts here including who they thought had the best showing.  Spoiler:  the company starts with an M. There is some notable news this week.  The whole Activision suing EA/Double Fine is still pretty crazy.  Also, Max Payne 3 looks to be an even more cynical take on the character, if that’s even possible.  Ready for some bald, dual pistol wielding slow-mo action?  If so, you are in for a treat. The guys are talking about...

Joystiq Podcast E309 – Carl’s Jr. edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1080 days ago

As seems to be the trend recently, the Joystiq guys are here with their impressions of the media briefing in a much shorter than usual, 20 minute podcast.  Maybe this is a good way to do it; shorter impressions during the show with a comprehensive wrap-up one the festivities are over. Project Natal is coming off surprisingly well in the press and Chris even mentions that Milo somehow escapes the uncanny valley syndrome.  Alan Wake and Left 4 Dead have proven to be equally baffling, as has the PSP Go at $249. Covered topics and games: Project Natal,...

Joystiq Podcast E309 – Do It Live edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1082 days ago

Since the ‘stiq crew didn’t get a chance to put out their regular podcast last Friday, they managed to put a quick one together just after arriving in LA yesterday.  It is a lean one at a mere 21 minutes. The guys are throwing out some quick predictions and the consensus seems to be that Microsoft will be going largely casual this year with their press conference announcements.  This is contrary to a lot of what we have heard from other outlets, but we will know in just a few short hours. Well, we all made it safely to E3, and in the...

Joystiq Podcast 097 – Perfect Strangers edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1099 days ago

Finally we get episode 1 of the Ludwig Kietzmann show.  Justin does get added to the mix half way through though.  Richard Mitchell from X3F is filling a spot along with David Hinkle. With the NPDs out this week Ludwig shares the fact that Riddick sold over 100k units.  This comes as a surprise to a lot of people since it dropped in price so quickly and the brand awareness is pretty slow.  Outside of all the PR speak, that is pretty good, though probably not as much as they would have hoped. Although it was a good effort, the show just isn’t...

Joystiq Podcast 096 – Golden Guys edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1106 days ago

Chris must be still working hard on his house so we get some Griffin McElroy this week. Justin started a new feature on Joystiq earlier this week named JoystiQuitter with the first edition being about Velvet Assassin.  It is based on the fact that some games just aren’t worth finishing and completing them really won’t add to the quality or usefulness of the review.  This approach is a nice breath of fresh air since this is happening anyway, outlets such as Joystiq being upfront about this actually lends credence to the contents of...

Joystiq Podcast 095 – Snacktivity edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1113 days ago

The guys are talking about Konami dropping Six Days in Fallujah.  As they say it took just 21 days between announcing the game to dropping it.  There was definitely controversy, but that is a little fast and obviously gun-shy.  What else does Konami have these days? The news that InFamous will be shipping with an Uncharted 2 multiplay beta sounds very familiar.  Sony is obviously using a strategy that worked very well for Microsoft a couple of years ago.  They have basically guaranteed better sales for InFamous. Steve Wiebe has won another...

Joystiq Podcast 093 – Norbert edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1127 days ago

Justin is feeling pretty good about his feat of getting the E74 error enough notoriety to have Microsoft include this case in their 3-year warranty.  In all seriousness, good on you Justin, this will affect many people in a positive way. As happens quite often, Chris received a gaming chachki from EA last week, but not quite so normal is what it was.  Imagine Chris’ surprise when he opened the package and found an illegal weapon in the form of brass knuckles.  Needless to say he soon got a call from EA asking him to send it back. The guys...

Joystiq Podcast 092 – Sequel edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1134 days ago

BioShock 2 gets covered this week and it looks– like BioShock.  This can be either a great thing or a bad thing depending on what you wanted from a sequel to one of the best games of 2007. Assassin’s Creed 2 is arguably much more exciting than BioShock 2.  As Justin says, the approach here is the better one when it comes to sequel.  It’s a new setting, 15th century Italy, but the character still provides the Assassin’s Creed vibe.  Make no mistake people, this will be one of the biggest games of the year. This particularly...

Joystiq Podcast 091 – Disconnected edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1141 days ago

The Brutal Legend embargo is up and that means we get some juicy details about it right at the beginning here.  There has not been too much information about the game until now, but it is apparently an open-world game.  This makes the game imminently more interesting– unless you don’t like open-world games that is.  The guys have a write-up on it so go check it out. Chris is not happy this week and he lets his fury out on Sony and thePS3 in a big way.  The rants range from the systems updating method to the recent introduction of...

Joystiq Podcast GDC ’09 Special 03

by Jonathan Downin in Games1148 days ago

Welcome to the 3rd and likely final (and somewhat slurred) GDC Joystiq Podcast. A lot of Kojima metaphors flying around.  His presentation at GDC was about the evolution of the Metal Gear Solid series and he confirmed that there would be another game in the series and it was hinted that it would star Raiden.  There will be more of a focus on melding Western and Eastern design philosophies with heavier use of software rather than hardware. OnLive gets a small mention and then the guys move on to talking about the apparent coup by Infinity Ward...

Joystiq Podcast GDC ’09 Special 02

by Jonathan Downin in Games1149 days ago

Justin played the Dexter game for iPhone and he seemed to like it quite a bit.  It sounds like the graphics are pretty and the gameplay uses iPhone specific motion stuff in an innovative way. This leads into a discussion about how the iPhone app store is getting bloated with content and could collapse in on itself in the same way the that Atari did back in the 80s. The guys then go on to talk about how they have heard nothing but mumbling of discontent about PS3 development. After yesterday’s chip-crunching debacle, Justin fired his own boss...

Joystiq Podcast GDC ’09 Special 01

by Jonathan Downin in Games1150 days ago

Capcom announced Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 at GDC and nobody was surprised. Justin and Chris are talking about OnLive and they are very skeptical.  The service/platform looks amazing providing they can make it work how it should.  No matter what ISP bandwidth caps will be a factor.  If all you do on your connection with a 250Gb cap on Comcast, you can get about 3 1/2 hours of gaming a day. This is a short one, but look for a daily GDC podcast from the Joystiq guys over the next few days. Chris and Justin landed in San Francisco for GDC yesterday,...

Joystiq Podcast 090 – Funny voices edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1155 days ago

RE5, RE5, RE5.  It is impossible to escape this game.  Ludwig has finally played through it so he has some things to add to what Justin already covered in his round-table. Justin is talking about The Path which sounds like a very interesting “game.”  It is developed by Tale of Tales and is a somewhat twisted and haunting re-telling of the classic Little Red Riding Hood story.  It’s really nice that Joystiq and guys like Justin are taking the time to play and cover some of these smaller/independent games.  At $10 it sounds...

Joystiq Podcast 089 – Gravity edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1162 days ago

Resident Evil 5 comes out today and Justin is talking about it here since he reviewed it earlier in the week.  He also put together a round-table review podcast for it that was released yesterday.  Anything and everything you need to know before buying it is covered so go give it a listen.  Sneak peek: they like it, but don’t love it. Many people loved the first Puzzle Quest, but it doesn’t sound like the follow-up, Galactrix, is going to go over quite as well.  The puzzle system is not quite as intuitive and some of the mechanics...
