Joystiq Podcast 107 – Horatio edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games994 days ago

Batman has Justin all hot and bothered this week.  He has a lot of great things to say about the game and while Chris and Ludwig aren’t quite as high on it, they are enjoying it as well.  Justin does have problems with people saying that they don’t like stealth as a reason for not giving it a try. The guys touch on the recent Xbox price drop, but still aren’t feeling too good about Microsoft’s current pricing structure for their consoles and accessories. Alexander, from the Xbox 360 Fancast, comes on for a segment about...

Joystiq Podcast 106 – Crackpot or crockpot edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1001 days ago

Justin played through Batman Arkham Asylum this week and he absolutely loved it.  He says that it is not only the best Batman or superhero game of all time, but the best game of the year so far.  Looking at the scores from around the web, it looks like he is not alone.  Check out Griffin’s review. The guys are talking about the news of Gamescom and they point out the now common observation that the PSP Go will be only $50 less than the new PS3.  Since Fable II was 1 of the Joystiq guys favorite games of last year, they are excited about...

Joystiq Podcast 105 – Wifearmed edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1008 days ago

It must be a somewhat slow time for releases with so many going back to back-catalog titles.  Justin has returned to Fallout 3 and is finding it a lot more enjoyable than he remembered.  Trials HD and Shadow Complex get their requisite coverage and ‘Splosion Man is still hanging on.  The guys also touch on the Xbox Avatar Marketplace and are coming around a bit to the idea of purchasing virtual accessories. The guys give a call to Joystiq Playstation blogger Andrew Yoon to talk about his recent hands-on time with the Beatles: Rock Band...

Joystiq Podcast 104 – PG edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1015 days ago

The guys start out with their typical recap of what they have been playing and Monkey Island continues to entertain.  Justin is playing through Fallout 3 with the release of the Mothership Zeta DLC.  Bethesda has really hit a homerun with the constant stream of DLC which is successfully keeping people interested and the game in the news.  Chris is digging into the back catalog with Mirror’s Edge and Ludwig continues his love for Tales of Vesperia.  Also, there are some surprisingly positive comments on the XBLA Turtles in Time remake. Sony...

Joystiq Podcast 103 – 2010 edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1022 days ago

The Activision/DoubleFine lawsuit is still in the news, but this time it is good news.  The judge overseeing the suit has stated that he doesn’t think Activision’s case has a high chance for success and that the suit should not affect the games release.  Activision is getting what they deserve with this one. A lot of big games that were set for release in the holiday season have been delayed until Q1 2010.  This has lead to a rather sparse Q4 for this year and an unprecedented Q1 of next year.  That leaves Modern Warfare 2, Halo...

Joystiq Podcast 102 – Vystal edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1029 days ago

The Joystiq crew continues doing the show live.  If you want to catch it live and join in on the discussion, the recording usually takes place at around 9:30am EST on uStream. Ludwig’s love of Monkey Island is in full affect here.  Is it just the people who loved the original that are loving this re-release and new episodic TellTale entry?  It’s hard to tell, but those that have no connection to the original certainly don’t seem to be as taken by the recent releases. There is a World of Warcraft movie in pre-production with...

Joystiq Podcast 101 – Time Gentlemen, Please! edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1036 days ago

The Joystiq boys started “doing it live” with episode 100 and it seems to be the standard from here on out.  This adds a great dynamic to the podcast.  You can join in on the the festivities every Friday morning by joining in their chat room during the live stream. Being the head of a big gaming website, Chris should be experiencing games the way they were meant to be played and now that he got an HDTV, he finally is.  Take it from him, experiencing games on a big TV really is quite different from playing them on a small monitor,...

Joystiq Podcast 100 – Century edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1043 days ago

Battlefield 1943 is not working too well for many people.  Apparently EA underestimated the popularity of the game so they did not allocate enough servers for online play.  How is that possible?  Hopefully it is working after they threw some more servers at the problem. The first episode of Tales of Monkey Island is out and it is good.  Some of LucasArts games have been put on Steam as well and that is a very good thing.  If you want to see more remakes of these old classics get over to Steam and buy the originals. This is a episode 100 for...

Joystiq Podcast 99.75 – Lettuce smokers edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1057 days ago

The guys have procured a soundboard, and in typical Joystiq fashion they have taken something that is completely played out and made it funny again.  There is one exception, Kindergarten Cop sound bytes, not yet funny again.  Give it a couple more years. A lot of talk about the mergers and acquisitions going on in the game industry lately.  Chris, with his undying love for id, interviewed John Carmack about the Zenimax deal and there are some interesting tidbits in there so go check it out. Rounding out the show is the guys talking about a Q&A...

Joystiq Podcast 099.5 – Get Off Our Lawn edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1064 days ago

Justin is absent from this week’s episode.  According to Chris, he is on a week long bender so hopefully he can get that out of his system in time for next week’s show. The speculation on the prospect of a new Xbox next year continues here.  The consensus seems to be that if it happens, it will probably be a slimmed down 360 with Project Natal stuff included. Covered topics and games: Parapa the Rapper, Rock Band Unplugged, Infamous, new Xbox rumors, Nintendo’s Demo Play, Max Payne 3, Metal Gear Solid, John Schappert leaves for...

Joystiq Podcast 099 – Post-E3 edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1071 days ago

E3 episode wrap-up has arrived.  Joystiq had a lo of great coverage of E3 this year and they are talking about their thoughts here including who they thought had the best showing.  Spoiler:  the company starts with an M. There is some notable news this week.  The whole Activision suing EA/Double Fine is still pretty crazy.  Also, Max Payne 3 looks to be an even more cynical take on the character, if that’s even possible.  Ready for some bald, dual pistol wielding slow-mo action?  If so, you are in for a treat. The guys are talking about...

Joystiq Podcast E309 – Burrito of Fate edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1079 days ago

Justin had a chance to get his hands on Project Natal and he is very excited about it.  Apparently, the technology works as advertised, but the actual unit looks nothing like how it has been presented.  AT this point it sounds like it is pretty big and cumbersome so it is still a work in progress. Uncharted 2 is being described as “so pretty it is unfair to every other game.”  Star Wars: The Old Republic has a lot of MMO people excited and the guys says that when you play as different character classes within the game the story will...

Joystiq Podcast E309 – Carl’s Jr. edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1080 days ago

As seems to be the trend recently, the Joystiq guys are here with their impressions of the media briefing in a much shorter than usual, 20 minute podcast.  Maybe this is a good way to do it; shorter impressions during the show with a comprehensive wrap-up one the festivities are over. Project Natal is coming off surprisingly well in the press and Chris even mentions that Milo somehow escapes the uncanny valley syndrome.  Alan Wake and Left 4 Dead have proven to be equally baffling, as has the PSP Go at $249. Covered topics and games: Project Natal,...

Joystiq Podcast E309 – Do It Live edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1082 days ago

Since the ‘stiq crew didn’t get a chance to put out their regular podcast last Friday, they managed to put a quick one together just after arriving in LA yesterday.  It is a lean one at a mere 21 minutes. The guys are throwing out some quick predictions and the consensus seems to be that Microsoft will be going largely casual this year with their press conference announcements.  This is contrary to a lot of what we have heard from other outlets, but we will know in just a few short hours. Well, we all made it safely to E3, and in the...

Joystiq Podcast 098 – Pre-pre-E3 edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1092 days ago

Infamous has proven to be a critics’ darling.  Everyone seems to love it including Griffin McElroy who is on this week’s show in place of Justin.  As the guys state, Sony has not handled the marketing of the game well at all.  When they have a great, exclusive game, they should go all out on it. There are 2 more DLC packs coming to Fallout 3.  They both sound pretty substantial with one centering around an alien encounter.  Good new for those of you playing on PS3, all of the DLC packs are coming to PS3 as well.  You just have...
