Garnett has gone to the effort of providing us with a full, to-the-minute breakdown of the show this week.  You can see that on the 1UP boards, but we have also put it in the show notes provided below. We get the definitive Infamous discussion this week.  The guys spend almost a full 30 minutes talking about the game so if there is anything you want to know about it, it is probably discussed here.  If you want to know more after listening to this you might as well just go out and buy the game. Trico gets some time leading into some E3 predictions. ...

Listen UP: 05/15/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1099 days ago

With Listen UP going for 2 1/2 hours it is pretty difficult to pick out the biggest stories every week.  At the beginning 2 boxing games that couldn’t be more different are covered, Punch Out! and Fight Night Round 4.  They both sound like they have things to make them equally awesome in different ways. John is talking about some causal games this week as usual.  After touching upon some iPhone games he moves on to EA Sports Active.  This is a big game for Peter Moore over at EA and it sounds like it is going to be pretty big.  It appears...

Since it all started at 1UP with David’s article, he is on talking about the PSP Go! and how he got the information he did.  This leads into a discussion on how the PSP business model needs to change to be really viable and successful.  The possibility for the PSP to really take off this year seems to be getting more likely all the time. With E3 just a month away the guys speculate on timelines and schedules in relation to new consoles being announced/released.  The consensus is definitely not this year and problem not even next year. ...

CO-OP | Episode 107 – Mother Mission’s Fruits

by Jonathan Downin in Games1123 days ago

Grand Theft Auto is the first game in the show this week and there are a lot of good things being said about it.  The art style that Rockstar chose for the game suits the DS perfectly and makes a whole lot of gameplay situations possible.  It would have been an easy cash-in, but they really went that extra mile. You know that the iPhone has become a legitamate gaming platform once it takes up a whole segment on CO-OP.  It really is an exciting platform and a lot of gaming value eith games that are almost underpriced. The new Riddick game has...

Get ready for a lengthy Listen Up this week.  There is some edginess going on at the beginning here, but it all in good fun. Killzone 2 is back in the conversation since the guys have been playing it.  The impressions are not all positive and the NPD aren’t very positive for the game either. Patrick is talking about Fallout 3: The Pitt expansion and it doesn’t exactly sound like a winner.  He does say that there are some incredible weapons to be had. As mentioned before, the NPDs are out and there is a lot of interpreting going on. ...

CO-OP | Episode 106 – How Jason Got His Groove Back

by Jonathan Downin in Games1131 days ago

The first game this week is Motorstorm: Pacific Rift.  This came out last year, but it gets a full segment here.  It nice that the CO-OP crew isn’t afraid to go back and talk about games that may not be new, but have possibly been overlooked. Henry Hatsworth is the second game on the show and don’t let yourself be fooled be the name and art style, this game is by no means casual.  Everybody cannot stress enough how hard the game is.  There is a good point made that EA may have made a mistake with the marketing on this one with the...

The DSi is the starting point this week and nobody seems to think it is worth the extra $40.  It has sold amazing well in its first week though and it is incredible how Nintendo has managed to actually introduce a price-hike on a system. Wheelman has been getting middling reviews, but if you watch videos of the game it looks fun.  As the guys say, it’s not AAA, it’s not polished and it’s not exactly even good, but it is fun in that “just drive around and smash stuff” sort of way. In the return of the “4 minute...

Recipe for a 1UP GDC podcast:  1 part journalists, 1 part developers, 2 parts alcohol. Things are crazy from the beginning here, but after the break is when things really break loose.  There is a lot of high level discussion almost being had here.  Everyone has a lot of analogies and a lot of ways they approach and feel about games and it all adds up to nothing too coherent. That doesn’t mean it’s bad though.  There are some great views in here if you can wade through the sea of talking points. Victor Lucas, Sterling McGarvey, Matthew...

CO-OP | Episode 104 – GDC 2009 Special

by Jonathan Downin in Games1145 days ago

This is the GDC coverage you have been waiting for.  Many podcasts have covered GDC, but now you really get to see some of the best stuff that was there.  The CO-OP guys hit another one out of the park.  And did we mention that Jeff Cannata and Adam Sessler are sitting in as well? OnLive, OnLive, OnLive.  The madness just won’t stop.  The guys have some good impressions and what everyone can agree on is that even if this doesn’t work in this iteration it will end up taking over at some point. There is so much covered here: DSi,...

This one starts out with the BioWare doctors and they have a few things to say about the evolution of western RPG design.  They don’t say anything about Mass Effect 2, but they do talk a bit about Dragon Age. David Jaffe commands the second segment and never runs out of things to say.  He is always opinionated and that is no different here, but he has real views on things.  There are many issues he takes with games journalism and even admits he just looks at review scores.  He goes on to suggest that 1UP move to a 1 paragraph review system...

Resident Evil 5 is still a big topic and special guest, whom many of you may remember, Mark MacDonald is back from Japan for GDC and has some serious opinions to share.  Things have largely turned around for RE5, but obviously many still have some issues with it. If nothing else, OnLive has proven that it can capture the imagination of the games industry.  There is a discussion about this new product/concept in the second half here.  Pete Wanat has a lot to say about it and as it turns out, as the only non-journalist, he is the only one with...

What They Play 12: The one where John sounds like Rorschach

by Jonathan Downin in Games1165 days ago

There is an interesting discussion here about war games and how they can be viewed or experienced as well as when and how to let children play these type of violent games.  They talk about one case where one set of parents required their son to abide by the Geneva Convention if he wanted to play Call of Duty: World at War.  It is an interesting concept and could be a stepping-off point for many parents out there. The topic of violence vs. sexual content is broached again in this episode.  Tom suggests that many of us on an intellectual level...

CO-OP | Episode 101 – Introducing the Band – Killzone 2 & Noby Noby Boy

by Jonathan Downin in Games1166 days ago

And the official first episode of the first season of CO-OP lands on Revision 3. The first game discussed is Noby Noby Boy.  There is a lot of nuance in the game and the “toy” aspect is played up a lot here.  A good point is made about how when we were young we didn’t need objectives to enjoy our toys, so why do we now?  It’s the context from which this toy is offered that makes people expect goals. Killzone 2 is covered in the second segment and the guys like it, but have a fair amount of problems with it as well.  It...

Garnett is talking about H.A.W.X. and making it sound better than any other impressions around.  It doesn’t seem like it going to be for anyone who isn’t really into flight combat games, but it may be the next game for people that have been waiting for the now stagnant genre to have a good new title. The Ghostbuster game sounds surprisingly amazing.  It’s not a game that has been touted as a AAA title, but it may just be a summer sleeper hit.  The graphics are great, it has all the right people involved and just sounds fun. ...

What They Play 11: The one with all the gateway games

by Jonathan Downin in Games1172 days ago

Tom brings up an interesting anecdote up front on this one.  He tells how playing RTS games was one of the first type of game captured his young son’s interest.  His point is that there is action, but it is somewhat removed so it is exciting, but not scary. There is a discussion in the middle section between John and Tom responding to a letter about critical reception to games as apposed to movies.  This raises the topic of liking games that have not reviewed well and the acceptability of this by gamers and non-gamers.  Are there any games...
