Leo rarely covered gaming topics on TWiT, but this is the second podcast in the last week in which Modern Warfare 2 has received some discussion. The issues surrounding the PC version are covered, as the the 1st day sales figures, and it shows how mainstream Infinity Ward’s latest game is.
Geocities is officially gone. The $3.6 billion acquisition by Yahoo turned out to be one of the worst investments of all time. Although this news is enough to make anyone in their mid-20s nostalgic, anyone much younger will never know how it used to be....
There have been reports flying around the web that Comcast may be in the market to acquire a controlling share of NBC. This could lead to some drastic changes in how easy it is to watch streaming TV shows over the internet with cable providers having a large interesting in driving package subscriptions. A play for NBC could be a way for Comcast to protect their traditional revenue streams.
The topic of advertising takes a big chunk of time this week. It is popular topic and the crew weighs in with their takes on viable strategies. Leo is a strong...
This is a world-wide show this week with British programmer and blogger John Graham-Cumming and French blogger Patrick Beja are guests this week with the usual John C Dvorak. John Graham-Cumming has been in the news recently with his altruistic effort to get an apology from the British government over the persecution of early computer visionary Alan Turing for being gay. It’s a great story and shows how one person really can bring light to important issues.
Google’s efforts to digitize books is again the target of attack from the Department...
Google has been known to add some flair to their search page graphic from time to time, but the most recent one was weirdly geeky and pointed straight at game fans. The graphic depicted one of the Os in their name being taken by a UFO with an accompanying twitter code that translated to “All your O are belong to us.” This is a reference to the classic, poorly translated Japanese game Zero Wing, which is famous for the line “All your base are belong to us,” and Google did this on the 20th anniversary of the release of...
Snow Leopard is the first topic this week and no one seems to be too happy about Apple’s latest release. Even Leo feels like the update may not be all it should have been. He speculates that it was probably more of a marketing idea to roll a lot of smaller updates into a bigger package to have an OS release to combat Windows 7.
There are a lot of government related issues this week including new texting while drivings laws and border control laptop search laws. There is a discussion about “false bottom” encrypted OS installs...
It has been a somewhat light week in technology news, but that doesn’t stop Leo and crew from having some great discussions. Om Malik, of GigaOM fame, is on this week and it’s hard not to feel inadequate when listening to someone this intelligent. He’s a great guest and manages to be a great ying to Dvorak’s yang.
There is not too much hard news, but this allowed the guys to discuss more issue-based topics than usual. The conversation ranges from Google’s recent foray in digitizing “orphan” books to...
It’s a boy’s club TWiT this week and Dvorak is back in fine, grumpy style. This is the kind of TWiT that long-time fans love, and understandably so. Get ready for a rowdy group covering lots of topics.
Symantec has released a list of the top 100 searched terms by kids and out of the top 10, only 4 are actual search terms. The remaining 6 were comprised of searches for actual url titles such as youtube, myspace and even google. Of course, sex and porn were among the actual searches.
Brian Brushwood proves that he is a great guest...
In the latest iTunes update Apple blocked the Pre’s ability to sync natively, but Palm has issued an update to their Pre software that re-enables the functionality. The war is on. This should get interesting very quickly.
This week Pete Cashmore, of Mashable.com, is on and the guys are talking about how MySpace is doomed. This doesn’t seem too timely as MySpace has been fading for a while now. The site is inundated with old code and doesn’t serve any audience too well. One good point here is that they should focus on...
With Leo out of the country in China, Dvorak gets hosting duties this week. He does a great job at keeping the group lively. Dvorak really is the only person on the level of Leo who can pull this off this well.
The topics are a bit all-over on this one, but the CrunchPad gets some time right of the top. This is a device that many would love to get their hands on and if the form-factor and engineering is up to snuff, it may just be a stealth hit.
Bing is also catching some people off guard. If you asked anyone in tech 6 months ago if Microsoft...
This week’s TWiT is a fun one. The smaller group of Leo, Dvorak and Brian Brushwood is perfect here. The guys play off each other extremely well. Hopefully John and Brian are on more often together.
The news that advertisers are now paying more for big shows on Hulu than on TV is very exciting. This is a great sign that advertisers are taking notice of the potential of online video and how the audience is much more valuable there as it is highly targeted. Expect to be able to watch what you want, when you want more from here on out.
The...
It’s TWiT number 200 and to commemorate this milestone is the original TWiT crew of Leo, John C. Dvorak, Patrick Norton, Roger Chang and David Prager.
First topic this week is Twitter and how it has been used to such a great effect in Iran. It has been invaluable in giving the world a real view into what is happening to people on the streets protesting.
The RIAA is back in the news with their successful prosecution of a Minnesota woman who downloaded 24 songs and is being fined $1.9 million. They seem to be as clueless as ever and are...
