Command Prompt Podcast, Episode 42

by Jonathan Downin in Games1137 days ago

The first news of Assassin’s Creed 2 has come out with the reveal of a teaser trailer.  It contains imagery linked with the renaissance so there is a lot of speculation that it will be set in the 15th – 16th century Italy. The people behind The Longest Journey and Age of Conan are trying their hand at the MMO market again with The Secret World.  The game looks like a breath of fresh air as it is not your typical fantasy-based setting.  There have been no screenshots yet, but there is a cinema and seeing how the game has been in various...

Command Prompt Podcast, Episode 41

by Jonathan Downin in Games1144 days ago

Jason Ocampo is talking bout OnLive as he got try to give a spin at GDC.  He played Mirror’s Edge on the service and he says that there was just the slightest bit of lag, but that it was almost imperceptible.  He wrote-up his impressions over at IGN. The IGN PC guys had a chance to talk to the doctors from Bioware about Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age: Origins.  There hasn’t been to much information about ME2, but there are some morsels here.  Looks like we are going to have to wait for E3 to get any real, interesting information. ...

Command Prompt Podcast, Episode 40

by Jonathan Downin in Games1158 days ago

The guys are very excited about Mass Effect 2.  Bioware has now stated that it is slated for release in the early part of next year.  That is quite a way off and let’s just hope it’s not too long since the release of the first one so that people will have forgotten about the series. A big discussion about the recent outpouring of Bioshock 2 information.  There are a lot of weird things going on in this game including the new big sisters and playing as a big daddy, but the most distressing is the word that there will be multiplayer. ...

Command Prompt Podcast, Episode 39

by Jonathan Downin in Games1165 days ago

Jason had a chance to visit Valve last week.  While there he got a chance to play the soon to be released free downloadable content for Left 4 Dead which contains a new mode, “survival.”  Whereas a typical round lasts around an hour or more, rounds in the new survival game type usually go no longer than 10 minutes.  The mode just throws zombies at you until you are dead similar to “Horde mode” in Gears of War 2. The topic of easier to get into versus complicated games is covered in the mail section and Jason pours on some...

Command Prompt Podcast, Episode 38

by Jonathan Downin in Games1172 days ago

Empire: Total War is the big game this week.  Steve Butts reviewed it for IGN and gave it one of the highest rating that the IGN PC team has given out in recent memory, a 9.5.  This is higher than the 9.0 they gave Dawn of War II, which was hyped up as one of the biggest recent PC releases and has even gone on to outsell the WOW Lich King expansion this week. Tom Clancy’s EndWar, which released on consoles late last year, is coming out soon and Jason isn’t exactly loving it.  The game seem to be suffering a common case of consolitis...

Command Prompt Podcast, Episode 37

by Jonathan Downin in Games1179 days ago

Empire: Total War is the focus from the start here.  It’s good to see that even as PC games are taking a backseat to their console counterparts to some extent, there are sill very tried-and-true PC style games coming out. The prospect of a new Operation Flashpoint coming out is interesting.  For those of you old enough to remember the original was the hardest of hardcore shooters out there.  It will be nice to see a game going back in that direction rather than pure arcade shooter like the Call of Duties of the world. This is one of those...

Command Prompt Podcast, Episode 36

by Jonathan Downin in Games1185 days ago

Right up front we get a lot of Dawn of War II talk.  The guys are obviously pretty keen on it seeing how they gave it a 9.0. Hunting games aren’t generally looked upon favorably with game journalists and that’s not too much different here, but talk quite a bit about The Hunter. Braid is coming to PC.  It was originally set to be $20, but creator Jonathan Blow saw the outcry and decided to lower it to $15.  The game is something everyone should experience so if you didn’t play it on XBLA now you have a chance to get it. News...

Command Prompt Podcast, Episode 35

by Jonathan Downin in Games1193 days ago

The news of Battlefield 1943 is really interesting.  It’s basically a prettied up Battlefield 1942, which is not a bad thing, and it’s coming to Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network along with the PC release at $20.  This is a lot of value, especially if you never gave the original a go. Dragon Age for PC being delayed to coincide with the console release is causing quite an upstir with the PC crowd.  The concern is that this means it is being dumbed down and won’t be the hardcore PC RPG successor to Balder’s Gate...

Command Prompt Podcast, Episode 34

by Jonathan Downin in Games1200 days ago

The PC guys are finally getting their chance to jump into Burnout Paradise.  It sounds like it is running pretty well and the PC crowd is getting access to all the console DLC from the outset. More talk of the closing of Ensemble Studios on this one.  In closing, some info about their unreleased products has come out and a Halo MMO was something that was in the cards at some point.  The world of Halo seems like it could lend itself really well to an MMO.  Would it be a more traditional MMORPG or would it be a first-person shooter take on the...

Command Prompt Podcast, Episode 33

by Jonathan Downin in Games1207 days ago

Still no podcast art, really?  Come on guys, this isn’t 2006. We get a big discussion on Dawn of War II on this one.  The real-time strategy genre doesn’t seem to be really popular these days, but there are still plenty coming out, so maybe they still sell well?  This game looks to be pretty nuanced as most RTS games so if that is your thing this should be a must-buy. Are people interested in a Spore expansion pack?  I hear very little talk about that game since launch.  It wasn’t quite what people expected or were hoping...

Command Prompt Podcast – Episode 32

by Jonathan Downin in Games1221 days ago

Command Prompt is quickly becoming the most regular podcast on the IGN network outside of GameScoop! Mirror’s Edge on PC looks great!  It’s a love it or hate it type game, but I personally love it and the graphical improvements on the PC seem pretty significant.  We need more cloth physics in games. Looks like there are some big strategy titles coming out this year for the PC crowd.  Does anyone else find it difficult to get into games that take an hour or more to learn their gameplay mechanics? Anybody else feel bad for Jimmy sometimes? Hey,...

Command Prompt Podcast – Episode 31

by Jonathan Downin in Games1228 days ago

Wow, after almost a full 3 weeks, the Command Prompt crew is back.  IGN has been the worst of the bigger corporate guys when it comes to content over the holidays. What’s coming for PC this year–  the only big thing that comes to mind is id’s RAGE.  Things could be a whole lot more exciting if Starcraft 2 were to come out, but we are talking about Blizzard here so I’m not sure we can expect that one this year. It’s hard to believe that it’s 2009 already. Seriously, the millennium feels like it was yesterday....

Command Prompt Podcast – Episode 30

by Jonathan Downin in Games1249 days ago

The beginning of the ‘Best of’s of the year seem like they have started here with IGN and their best of 2008 PC awards.  Rack another win up for GTAIV. It’s somewhat telling that many of the top games honored on PC this year came from console roots.  I hate to propagate “the death of PC” mantra, but things are definitely changing on the PC front.  As long as World of Warcraft is around the PC as a gaming platform isn’t going anywhere though. IGN PC’s best of the Year – Sins of a Solar Empire How...

Command Prompt Podcast – Episode 29

by Jonathan Downin in Games1254 days ago

A couple days late on this one guys.  They are talking about their year in review of PC games which will be on IGN soon.  They are also covering the technical issues with GTAIV and the recent driver update by nVidia to solve some of these problems.  There is also some Sims info. It’s not cool to say, but The Sims is fun.  The Sims 3 looks like it’s going to be quite a bit more of the same, but with more.  Fine by me. This podcast is slightly longer than last weeks, but we’re still under some time pressure here, as we’re...

Command Prompt – Episode 28

by Jonathan Downin in Games1262 days ago

Jason Ocampo has brought the IGN PC team back after the holiday to preview and talk about their awards of the year.  Also, the guys get their hands on the PC release of the arguably widely overated game of the year GTAIV. We hope that you had a good Thanksgiving Break. The IGN PC Team sure did, well, save for Steve’s battle with strep throat. That’s the topic that kicks off our first podcast of December 2009. Yes, it’s December already, which means that the end of the year is in sight. We have plenty to talk about, like Grand...
