/Filmcast Ep. 91 – Green Zone

by Jon Cole in Movies695 days ago

Ghost Writer, Roman Polanski’s latest thriller, has garnered mixed opinions throughout the film critic culture, but the /Filmcast is decidedly positive about it.  Devindra compares it to Polanski’s neo-noir Chinatown, saying that the director can bring a lot of finesse and impact to a somewhat unexciting script.  Dave got a chance to check out Armored, an understated heist movie that ended up fairly well executed. The Oscars are hardly news, but due to scheduling, the /Filmcast hasn’t got a chance to talk about them until now. ...

Filmspotting #294: Alice in Wonderland / Un Prophet Interview / 2010 Oscar Picks

by Jon Cole in Movies706 days ago

Filmspotting dives in the rabbit hole this week with their review of Alice in Wonderland.  Adam starts things off by putting his total lack of Alice experience on the table, never having consumed the film before in either it’s previous written or cinematic outlets.  Unburdened by expectations, he does say that many of the elements of the film feel familiar, but he ultimately enjoyed the film and specifically Johnny Depp’s performance.  Matty gives due favor to the brilliant visuals of Tim Burton’s latest, but puts most of his...

The Totally Rad Show – Episode 146: Potpourrat

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Movies, TV768 days ago

It’s a “top 5″ extravaganza this week with the guys presenting their lists of top 5 movies, games, TV and moments of 2009. After each present their top 5, an overall top pick is chosen. Movies are up-front as always, and it is pretty easy to guess which film took top honors– something about being “moved by triumph.” The games section is a little more contentious with a rather wide range of games represented, but it is a clear choice in the end. TV is a strange one as there are very few repeat entries on the guys’...

CastMedium Podcast 018 – 01.04.10

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Movies, Tech768 days ago

We are back with our 1st podcast of 2010, but things start a little rocky with us being hit by another audio software crash. It’s listenable, and gets better in the 2nd half, so stick with it. The discussion starts with more Podcast Awards talk, and we find ourselves talking about 4 Guys 1UP again– hey, it won runner-up for best new podcast of ’09 for a reason. Bayonetta is the only new release this week, and we don’t care. Back catalog stuff takes center stage again this week with some frustration with Uncharted 2, love...

CastMedium Podcast 002 – 09.07.09

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Movies, Tech887 days ago

So far, so good.  2 weeks in a row! Erik picked up Batman so he shares his experiences with the game up front here with us discussing how it is similar to BioShock and Too Human.  We then move onto Wolfenstein and lament the absence of a demo for the game.  The opinions about Sony porting the first 2 God of War games to PS3 aren’t universally positive and Erik understands how those Mobcast guys feel about losing interest in games.  Then Jon and I share some Basterds thoughts and we round out the cast with a little love for Sansa. The CastMedium...

Filmspotting #272: Taking Woodstock / The Hidden Fortress / Top 5 Most Anticipated Movies

by Jon Cole in Movies890 days ago

Adam and Matty hop in their VW bus, drive down to the closest farm, and pass joint packed with film knowledge around a campfire for this week’s review of Taking Woodstock.  Both of the guys were interested in the idea of a Woodstock movie with no music, but they tend to end up in a similar spot of dissatisfaction with Ang Lee’s latest.  Matty does seem pretty positive about the lead actor, Demetri Martin, who he says plays the role of self-discovering, modest Elliot Tiber with a surprisingly degree of aptitude.  Both guys also agree...

The Geekbox: Episode 30

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc891 days ago

It’s a toned-down Geekbox this week with Karen out for her husbands birthday and Ryan Scott sick.  Everyone is predictably playing Batman and enjoying it.  Ryan talks about all the big PAX plans and he has included all the times and places for the proceeding in the post for this week’s episode. Disney’s acquisition of Marvel sparks a lot of conversation, but not too many insights.  There is some worry about what Disney will do with Marvel and the crew throws around the idea of Pixar doing animated Marvel movies.  Ryan Higgins...

Filmspotting #271: Inglourious Basterds / Top 5 Quentin Tarantino Scenes

by Jon Cole in Movies897 days ago

Inglourious Basterds has taken up quite a bit of real estate in the overarching film conversation, so Adam and Matty naturally take the movie by the horns with an extremely lengthy review.  Right from the start, Adam stunningly praises at least two scenes in the movie as “instant classics” that’ll have a place in film history forever.  He also praises Tarantino’s directing, specifically when a simple movement of the camera reveals multiple layers of depth and foreshadowing in a scene.  Inevitably hitting on the note of...

Scene Unseen – “Inglourious Basterds”

by Jon Cole in Movies898 days ago

Scene Unseen returns to normal with Chris back in the studio with Jimmy for their review of Quentin Tarantino’s latest movie, Inglourious Basterds.  Jimmy apparently seems pretty excited about the film, due to both the trailer and his professed love for Quentin Tarantino.  Chris comes from a similar direction, noting that the birth of his movie fandom was largely influenced by Pulp Fiction.  In their dissection of the marketing, Jimmy brings up the film’s misleading trailer which clearly implies that the movie has far more action...

/Filmcast Ep. 64 – Inglourious Basterds

by Jon Cole in Movies899 days ago

Nicholas Jasenovec, director of Paper Heart, adds some flavor to this week’s /Filmcast bringing a unique opinion of Ponyo to the “What Have We Watched” segment.  He takes note of the film’s interesting structure, making the film seem longer than it actually was because of the story being told from the perspective of a child.  Devindra and Adam both praise the second season of Mad Men, which implements great writing, strong drama, and consistency to make it succeed on an episodic level.  The conversation takes a turn for...

The Geekbox: Episode 28

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc, Movies905 days ago

Jade Kraus and Justin Haywald of 1UP are on this week in place of Mike Cruz and Karen Chu.  Jade and Justin had a chance to interview Yoshitaka Amano, of Final Fantasy fame, last weekend and are sharing their experience which leads into discussion about cosplay.  With a podcast called The Geekbox, it is not surprising that some of the crew have a bit of personal experience with cosplay. With the closing of GRIN game studios the group is talking about some comments from a developer, Eric Kozlowsky, about game critics and how they are not servicing...

The Totally Rad Show | Episode 126 – Hyperbole

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc, Movies908 days ago

This is the biggest Totally Rad Show in a long while.  District 9 is the first movie up this week and the guys absolutely loved it.  Dan goes on to say that he thinks that it will find a place among the original Star Wars and Matrix movies in cultural importance.  Inglourious Basterds, almost impossibly, has the guys equally, if not more excited.  Jeff says that this is possibly better than Pulp Fiction and is one of the best movies of all time.  Dan and Alex share the sentiment and point out that Tarantino has really perfected his craft with...

SModcast 92: Flame On!

by Jonathan Downin in Misc, Movies908 days ago

This is a surprisingly topic-filled Smodcast this week with the Kevin, Scott and Malcolm sticking to movie talk for most of the show.  Trailers kick this one off with Inglorious Basterds taking center stage.  Malcolm continues to be himself by letting loose some choice words about Eli Roth, but the group overall is interested in Tarantino’s latest. Kevin saw Funny People and he deems it his favorite Judd Apatow movie so far.  He addresses complaints about the last act and says that it really worked for him while championing Leslie Mann. ...
