CO-OP — Episode 314: Reflections 2009 Part 1

by Derek Lavigne in Games753 days ago

It may be well into the new year, but the guys at Area5 haven’t forgotten about 2009 just yet. This week they lapse from their normal formula and head back to the format of the very first episode of CO-OP, a bunch of friends sitting around talking about their favorite games of the year. After a quick stop on games with twitter integration, open world games become the first focus of conversation. David Ellis of 1up cites Infamous as one of his favorites, while Kat Bailey recounts her first experience with Red Faction: Guerrilla.  Two heavy...

CastMedium Podcast 017 – 12.28.09

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Movies, Tech774 days ago

There is not much going on this week with many of the major podcasts taking a break for the holidays. We take this opportunity to discuss what we have been playing. I purchased Red Faction: Guerilla for $10 over Steam while it was on sale a few days ago, but the Games for Windows Live integration completely ruined the experience. After my rant, we move on into a lengthy discussion about Steam and the prospects of Valve being purchased in the future. Jon is a new PS3 owner and he is experiencing Uncharted and Infamous for the 1st time. Infamous sparks...

Podcast Beyond, Episode 104

by Jonathan Downin in Games897 days ago

Chris Roper is out this week so Greg takes over the hosting reins and manages to keep things surprisingly on-track. Greg and Colin decide to pit Batman vs. Infamous since they each come down on different sides of the argument.  They start out with a minute to argue their side, but quickly abandon this and just discuss the merits of each.  Greg praises the way Batman really makes you feel like the caped crusader and Colin touts Infamous’s originality.  Greg ends up naming Batman the better game. As the guys move into the reader mail section...

Player One Podcast | Episode 142 – Walk Like They Do On The Moon

by Jonathan Downin in Games943 days ago

This may be the most good things to be said about Transformers 2 on a podcast ever, but it is still just deemed moderately entertaining. The guys spend over 30 minutes talking about the Genesis “classic” Moonwalker.  This is a lot of time for a game that really wasn’t that great.  A game that has synchronized group dancing with dogs can’t be all bad though. Talk of LucasArts classic takes up a good portion of this episode.  The recently released Tales of Monkey Island episode gets covered here as do the recent Steam re-releases....

Giant Bombcast 07-07-2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games948 days ago

The first episode of Telltale Game’s Tales of Monkey Island is out and it is good.  Telltale is mad up of a lot of the original LucasArts people so this makes sense.  Go pick up the season pass on Steam for $34.99. Okay, get this, a company called Galloping Ghost is allegedly making a digitized fighting game in the style of Mortal Kombat.  The only difference is that this is 2009.  Just go check out the screenshots. It gets one more mention–  Asteroids, the movie. Covered topics and games: July 4th, Infamous, Trine, Call of Juarez,...

Player One Podcast | Episode 141 – Johnny Sega and the Turbo Touches

by Jonathan Downin in Games949 days ago

Okay, we are big fans of the Player One Podcast guys around these parts, but the revelation that Phil is playing, and enjoying, Dynasty Warriors 6 Empires is baffling.  We kid.  It sounds like it’s a good time if you like the killing of 100s of guys at a time. Greg Ford has finally put some serious time into Infamous and he is enjoying it.  He has also been giving the highly under-rated Zelda 2 some time.  If you haven’t played it, get yourself a Wii and pick it up on WiiWare. The guys are doing a Game Club this week for the classic...

Joystiq Podcast 99.75 – Lettuce smokers edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games959 days ago

The guys have procured a soundboard, and in typical Joystiq fashion they have taken something that is completely played out and made it funny again.  There is one exception, Kindergarten Cop sound bytes, not yet funny again.  Give it a couple more years. A lot of talk about the mergers and acquisitions going on in the game industry lately.  Chris, with his undying love for id, interviewed John Carmack about the Zenimax deal and there are some interesting tidbits in there so go check it out. Rounding out the show is the guys talking about a Q&A...

CO-OP | Episode 201 – The Only Way to Fly–Prototype, Infamous, Red Faction: Guerrilla

by Jonathan Downin in Games963 days ago

And the new season begins with the whole Rebel FM crew sitting in on this one.  It’s always cool to see these guys on CO-OP. The first 2 games here, Prototype and Infamous, have been somewhat talked-out.  The opinions here are nothing that you wouldn’t expect.  Prototype is okay and has some decent action, but it’s probably not worth a full $60.  Infamous is tons of fun, has great core gameplay and excites about a potential future sequel. Red Faction continues to surprise.  This is a game that, by all accounts, shouldn’t...

Joystiq Podcast 099.5 – Get Off Our Lawn edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games966 days ago

Justin is absent from this week’s episode.  According to Chris, he is on a week long bender so hopefully he can get that out of his system in time for next week’s show. The speculation on the prospect of a new Xbox next year continues here.  The consensus seems to be that if it happens, it will probably be a slimmed down 360 with Project Natal stuff included. Covered topics and games: Parapa the Rapper, Rock Band Unplugged, Infamous, new Xbox rumors, Nintendo’s Demo Play, Max Payne 3, Metal Gear Solid, John Schappert leaves for...

The Geekbox: Episode 19

by Jonathan Downin in Games968 days ago

Why must Nintendo pu out games that make us have to buy a Wii?  There aren’t that many amazing games on the Wii, but there are those games that are just good enough to make the system almost worth a purchase. The recent changes in the World of Warcraft progression has Karen upset.  The point is introduced by Karen talking about the iPhone 3GS.  Oh how the opinions change.  Has WoW finally started its decline? The topic of people coming up to the Geekbox crew at conventions as if they know them comes up.  Almost all of us surely don’t...

The HotSpot 06/16/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games969 days ago

First up this week is a lengthy discussion about Prototype.  After a largely mediocre initial critical reception it has really started to win some people over.  Justin and Kevin are having a lot of fun with the game and it even gets the nod as being better than Infamous by Justin. NPDs for May have come out and as good as Infamous is it just didn’t come through in the numbers.  It sold just over 175,000 units upon release which is not too good for a high profile PS3 game.  This has been a trend with almost all PS3 exclusives.  Look for...

Player One Podcast | Episode 138 – Tripping the moisture sensor

by Jonathan Downin in Games971 days ago

Greg Ford starts off this one by talking a bit about his E3 experiences.  He is mostly lamenting how tiring it was to cover the show, but he does field some questions from the guys about a few things including Project Natal.  Microsoft’s new motion technology comes off a little better this week with the guys, but not by much. CJ had a quite eventful week with an ordeal including his iPhone and Apple refusing to replace it due to suspected water damage.  As it turns out, he just had some pocket lint stuck in the headphone jack.  Yeah. Infamous...

Invisible Walls – Episode 61

by Jonathan Downin in Games973 days ago

There is some talk of not-so-exclusive announcements made at E3 for Microsoft and Sony in Final Fantasy XIV and Metal Gear Solid Rising here at the beginning.  It’s strange how these companies posture games as exclusive when they know the facts will get out within days if not hours. Booth babes get a whole discussion in the middle here with a whole lot of uncomfortable video to go along with it. Prototype gets a lot of love here with Shane almost gushing about it.  Among the whole Infamous/Prototype debate Infamous has been the winner, but...

Listen UP: 06/12/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games973 days ago

This is an absolutely epic episode of Listen UP.  Everything from E3 is covered here with the usual skew towards the business side of the games industry. Games the have been played this week fall into two main categories of good and bad this week with Red Faction and Infamous in the former and Indiana Jones off the deep end of the latter.  Unfortunately, Prototype seems to fall into the later as well to some extent. The whole middle section is taken up with they guys talking about the market strategies of the big companies and at this point it...

Rebel FM Episode 21 – 06/11/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games973 days ago

First up is the regular game talk.  The Infamous/Prototype debate can basically be settled at this point.  It is all but unanimous that Prototype is a little shallow and is graphically underwhelming.  Infamous has its own share of issues, but the bottom line is that it is just fun. The second segment is dedicated to motion controllers.  It is all speculation at this point, but one good point is that you can’t deny that Nintendo is handling the release of Wii Motion Plus very well.  Bundling it with a ton of different games is absolutely...
