The Danger/Sidekick data loss situation has been the biggest story of the week. Danger holds all of Sidekick user’s data in the cloud and something went horribly wrong and they lost all of that data. This has called the idea of keeping all data in the cloud into question for many people. According to Danger, there still may be hope for user to retain their data if their phone has not been turned off or ran out of battery. Barnes & Nobles is on the verge of announcing their competitor to Amazon’s Kindle and it is rumored to have a...

Engadget Podcast 163 – 09.20.2009

The first story this week has the guys discussing the ongoing Apple/Google Voice debacle. Google released a statement explicitly stating that Apple head of marketing, Phil Schiller, personally rejected Google Voice from the App Store and the guys can’t understand how this could be a miscommunication as Apple implies. Engadget’s Zune HD review has gone up and Joshua has a lot of nice things to say about it and finds it to be an amazing media player, but not so great if you want more from a device like this. He also goes onto say that...

Apple’s iPod event on Tuesday turned out to be devoid of any big announcements.  The addition of a video camera to the iPod nano is welcome, but not Earth-shattering.  The storage bump and internal specs revision on the iPod touch are similarly uninspiring and they guys say as much here. As seems to be the case every week, there was a lot of cellphone news this week lead by Palm’s announcement of the Pixi and Motorola’s Cliq.  Ryan shares that after having some hands-on time with the Pixi, it feels distractingly sluggish in...

It’s a phone-heavy show this week, but the guys are starting out with Toshiba’s entry into the tablet market.  It’s almost like Toshiba is trying to cash-in on the Apple tablet rumors, but with a device based on Windows Mobile 6.0 they will have a hard time convincing anyone that it is worth their money.  In other Toshiba news, they are finally putting out a Blu-ray player in wake of their failed HD-DVD format. Sony is introducing the first entry in years to their VAIO X line with a notebook that is less than half an inch thick...

There has been a lot of hope leading up to the release of the HTC Hero that it would be the 1st real Android showcase, but unfortunately, this isn’t the case.  Again, the hardware is just not up to the task with it lacking in pure horsepower and the keyboard simply not delivering.  Maybe next time.  Catch the details in Joshua’s review. The announcement of the partnership between Plastic Logic and Barnes & Noble shows promise as the first platform that could rival Amazon’s Kindle.  This news couldn’t come at a better...

Engadget Podcast 154 – 07.11.2009

The Google Chrome OS announcement has struck the guys as somewhat unsubstantial and showing a wrong approach.  Google didn’t release any details with the announcement and a good point is made here that if Microsoft did something like this, people would be having any of it.  The purely web-based approach isn’t impressing the Engadget crew either.  The overall feeling is that OSs need a radically new approach and this isn’t it. The guys go really in-depth on issues of Android and new handsets that are launching with the mobile...

Engadget Podcast 152 – 06.26.2009: The Day the Music Died 2

by Jonathan Downin in Tech959 days ago

The new Nokia N97 rules the first part of this week’s podcast.  The write-up over at Engadget is something pretty special, so if you have 20 minutes, go check that out.  Long story short, it’s okay, but don’t call it a comeback. The official pricing for Windows 7 has been released by Microsoft and there are so many things going wrong here that it’s hard to comprehend.  How is it that Microsoft can continually be so clueless about how they should market their products?  Vista was a flop, get people onto Windows 7 in a...

The Android platform is finally starting to get some new handsets other than the G1.  The HTC Hero and myTouch 3G are talked about here with multitouch being worked into the mix even though Android doesn’t support it natively. Inexplicably there is some printer talk on this week.  It’s obvious that we don’t really need printers to do much more than print things as easily, flexibly and fast as possible.  We don’t need touchscreen printers. The guys keep teasing the launch of gdgt.com so it must be close.  I think we are...
