Player One Podcast | Episode 145 – Cincinnati Style

by Jonathan Downin in Games1020 days ago

The Player One guys took this week’s podcast to solicit comments and voicemeails from people who worked with and knew former fellow game journalist, Andy Baran, who recently passed away.  It is a great gesture from the guys and hearing so many people share memories about Andy shows how close this community really is. It sounds like he was a quirky and nerdy guy, but made an impression on everyone he crossed paths with.  There are a lot of touching moments here, so even if you weren’t aware of Andy, you may want to keep the tissues...

Player One Podcast | Episode 144 – LARPing our ARG

by Jonathan Downin in Games1027 days ago

Where have the real gamers gone?  It’s okay Wii fans, we’re just kidding.  CJ has been enjoying Wii Sports Resort and he deems it as “fun.”  The cycling has been universally panned, but that is just 1 of the 12 events you can participate in.  He praises it with the box-quote of “Wii Sports fans rejoice!” Greg Ford is leaving to get an MBA at Notre Dame.  Getting an MBA is an impressive enough feat, but that he is going to Notre Dame just adds to that exponentially.  Best of luck to Greg Ford on that “business...

Player One Podcast | Episode 142 – Walk Like They Do On The Moon

by Jonathan Downin in Games1041 days ago

This may be the most good things to be said about Transformers 2 on a podcast ever, but it is still just deemed moderately entertaining. The guys spend over 30 minutes talking about the Genesis “classic” Moonwalker.  This is a lot of time for a game that really wasn’t that great.  A game that has synchronized group dancing with dogs can’t be all bad though. Talk of LucasArts classic takes up a good portion of this episode.  The recently released Tales of Monkey Island episode gets covered here as do the recent Steam re-releases....

Player One Podcast | Episode 141 – Johnny Sega and the Turbo Touches

by Jonathan Downin in Games1047 days ago

Okay, we are big fans of the Player One Podcast guys around these parts, but the revelation that Phil is playing, and enjoying, Dynasty Warriors 6 Empires is baffling.  We kid.  It sounds like it’s a good time if you like the killing of 100s of guys at a time. Greg Ford has finally put some serious time into Infamous and he is enjoying it.  He has also been giving the highly under-rated Zelda 2 some time.  If you haven’t played it, get yourself a Wii and pick it up on WiiWare. The guys are doing a Game Club this week for the classic...

Player One Podcast | Episode 138 – Tripping the moisture sensor

by Jonathan Downin in Games1069 days ago

Greg Ford starts off this one by talking a bit about his E3 experiences.  He is mostly lamenting how tiring it was to cover the show, but he does field some questions from the guys about a few things including Project Natal.  Microsoft’s new motion technology comes off a little better this week with the guys, but not by much. CJ had a quite eventful week with an ordeal including his iPhone and Apple refusing to replace it due to suspected water damage.  As it turns out, he just had some pocket lint stuck in the headphone jack.  Yeah. Infamous...

Player One Podcast | Episode 137 – From Nowhere Near LA

by Jonathan Downin in Games1078 days ago

With the craziness of E3 ramping up, we missed the last Player One Podcast, but we got the guys’ E3 thoughts on this one and there are plenty going around.  The POP guys are some of the few that found the Sony conference to be stronger than Microsoft’s briefing.  This is largely due to their low level of interest in Project Natal it seems. Shadow Complex, a smaller game which you may have missed during the E3 coverage, is getting a lot of attention.  It is basically a Metroidvania (Metroid/Castlevania) style game with updated 3D visuals...

Podcasters’ Favorite Podcasts | Part 5 – Player One Podcast Redux

by Jonathan Downin in Features1086 days ago

And here we have the follow up to last week’s Podcasters’ Favorite Podcasts featuring the Player One Podcast.  After having CJ share his favorites, we have Greg Sewart and former 1UPer Greg Ford’s picks.  If you haven’t checked out Greg Ford’s new digs, Bitmob, you should go give it a look. We have a big one lined up for next week as well so be sure to check back next Thursday. Greg Ford [Player One Podcast | Bitmob] The BS Report (http://sports.espn.go.com/espnradio/podcast/archive?id=2864045) This highly entertaining...

Player One Podcast | Episode 135 – Boxing Days

by Jonathan Downin in Games1090 days ago

The guys start out with a little Nintendo news.  The new play control versions of Metroid Prime 1 and 2 are being bundled with Metroid Prime 3 for $50 in August.  This is a great deal, especially if you haven’t played any of them before. Punch Out! is the game this week and as almost everyone, the POP crew is pretty into it.  There are a re few complaints about how faithful the game is to the original, but with some things incorporated from Super Punch Out! and a great art style, the game ultimately doesn’t come off as lazy.  They...

Player One Podcast | Episode 134 – The Graphics are a Little Jackée

by Jonathan Downin in Games1097 days ago

The rumored redesigned PS3 is again not getting much appreciation.  Nobody seems to like the presumed new look, but the prospect of a PS3 that doesn’t use the Spiderman font is something that does excite! Everyone goes through their games of the week, but the conversation picks up a lot at the end with talk moving onto Burnout Paradise and its new Cops and Robbers mode, Fat Princess and 1 Vs. 100.  It sounds like Fat Princess holds a lot of potential for some future multiplayer action. 1 Vs. 100 looks to be a very fresh take on how to handle...

Player One Podcast | Episode 133 – Pleased to Meet You, Soulless Automaton

by Jonathan Downin in Games1104 days ago

There is some serious hate directed towards the iPhone this week, not so much from the guys, but from a caller.  It funny how some are so negative about gaming on the iPhone to the point that it comes off as almost defensive.  Anything that widens the gaming audience is a positive thing. The lamenting of the downfalls of Resident Evil 5 and Killzone 2 goes on.  Both of these seem to have equally underwhelmed a lot of the people that were looking forward to them. The guys have some hands-on impressions of the InFamous demo and not all is well. ...

Player One Podcast | Episode 132 – Full of Intrigue

by Jonathan Downin in Games1111 days ago

The guys start out this week’s podcast with listener questions and they touch upon a lot of different topics.  PSP Go! get some time with the guys and we even sneaked a question in there that spurs some discussion. There are tons of games covering this week and since there aren’t too many big games being released these days they are covering some that have been out for a while. Killzone 2 and Resident Evil takes up a good chunk of the last part of the episode and Greg Ford seems to have enjoyed Killzone quite a bit whereas Greg Sewart...

Player One Podcast | Episode 131 – Don’t Got Time for a Time Attack

by Jonathan Downin in Games1117 days ago

John Ricciardi is on this week and for those of you that are not familiar with him, he worked for EGM and 1UP before he left for Japan to start his own Japanese game translation company.  Even if you are not familiar with him you probably know Mark MacDonald who also left EGM and 1UP a little while ago.  Mark now works with John in Tokyo. Final Fantasy XIII comes up and with John working out of Japan he has a unique perspective on it.  It’s somewhat telling that even he is somewhat skeptical about the game.  While he praises the visuals...

Player One Podcast | Episode 130 – Insane Clown College

by Jonathan Downin in Games1124 days ago

The guys are talking about the new Amazon storefront which offers offer XBLA purchases.  Once your purchase something there they will immediately send you a download code of  your purchase.  This nice thing about this allows you to gift games. Patapon 2 is touched upon here and it is interesting the it is being sold in physical stores, but it is just the box with a download code inside.  The guys here speculate that this is being done because the box and manuals were already printed.  Highly possible. Outrun Online Arcade is now on XBLA and...

Player One Podcast | Episode 129 – The DSi of the Storm

by Jonathan Downin in Games1132 days ago

Phil refuses to stop singing and starts out this one with some more tourturous riffing.  He did just get married though so we’ll cut him some slack on his joyous outbursts. Chris and Phil picked up a DSi each and they seem pretty pleased with it aside from a minor screen issue for Phil.  The DSi seems great, but it will guarantee that we won’t see a true upgrade to the systems for at least another 2 years.  Maybe we will have to look at PSP for the next exciting hardware update.  The rumor is E3 may be big for PSP-related announcements. GTA:...

Player One Podcast | Episode 128 – Caturday Night Fever

by Jonathan Downin in Games1139 days ago

Like cat stories?  Oh boy have you come to the right place.  Cat stories take up a good 30 minutes of the beginning of the podcast and Phil has had some pretty bad cat experiences.  A burning building and a vicious cat are involved, need more be said? There is a lot of game talk here after the domesticated animal talk and it is all interspersed with Phil feeling the need to break out in song all too often. Everyone seems pretty excited about Punch Out!! but there is some controversy over if the fighter in the SNES or Wii version is in fact Little...
