Good Grief: 11/09/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games823 days ago

It’s the last episode of Good Grief. With its erratic schedule, it’s not too surprising. After the downer of the issues surrounding Modern Warfare 2, the group moves onto Tom Morello and his explosion onto the gaming scene with some leaked Halo Reach screens. Sam shares some thoughts about thee PS3 implementation of Netflix and it seems to work fine. Tina is enjoying Ratchet & Clank, which Sharkey somehow deems bottom-of-the-barrel for game mechanics. In recession gaming, the group is talking about Miami Shark, a game that allows...

Good Grief: 09/01/2009

After being M.I.A. for months, Good Grief is back.  Tina Tweeted a request for input on the podcast a few weeks ago that implied that it may be going away, but then followed-up saying that it would stick around, but may be reworked a bit.  Well, it doesn’t seem like much has changed, but it is back. There is an involved discussion about the objectification of women in games at the beginning this week and Tina offers her take on the issue.  This leads into a discussion about the controversial “RapeLay” series from Japan. In recession...

First up this week, it is story-time with the crew talking about games that have frustrated them and rage quitting.  There are not too many really funny stories, but it does evolve into a good discussion about how more games should incentivize playing-out a loosing match, or at least punish playing it out. The second half is devoted to Comic-Con talk with 1UP’s new intern Yara.  Yara caught Sam on a plane on the way back from the Tokyo Game Show a couple years ago and invited him to Pictochat on DS.  They stayed in touch over the years...

Video games going digital is a topic that is very popular recently.  The Good Grief crew chimes in with their opinion on the subject at the beginning. It’s a fighting game extravaganza in the middle section here with Richard talking a lot about Street Fighter and a few other fighting games.  Tina is sitting in and takes the role of most of us in not knowing much about this classic genre.  Even with fighting games making a resurgence recently, it still seems to be a dying breed. Battlefield Heroes has the crew full of stories at the end. ...

In the recession gaming segment Sharkey is talking about Seed of Destruction.  The game is great and free so go check it out.  Be warned though, as many of Sharkey’s recommendations, this game is NSFW. 1UP recently ran a contest for individual bloggers on their site where the best entrant would be selected to blog for 1UP at E3.  The winner was Matt Clark who wrote quite a few blogs, and more importantly, made some pretty funny videos in which he dressed up as the 1UP mushroom and made a fool of himself in public.  That’s something...

As usual this week’s episode starts with a culling of the boards.  There are 2 great questions this week pertaining to games being stigmatized and justifying them to people around you along with underrated games in franchises.  Some games discussed in this context are Mario Sunshine, Metal Gear Solid 2, Silent Hill 4 and many others.  What games in a series do you think are underrated? As usual indie games come up and Sharkey mentions the Cactus Arcade collection.  It is a collection of some of the best games to come out of the indie game...

The podcast starts out this week on a discussion on journalism and the recent experimentation going on with the 1UP news style.  They have recently started serving out their news with a little bit more commentary attached in the vein of Joystiq or Kotaku.  There are some interesting points made, but Sharkey doesn’t want to talk about it at all. Good Grief has been great about keeping the focus of the show largely on the community.    Whether it is reading user blogs, reading comments or playing games with readers/listeners they are obviously...

The Resident Evil 5 multiplayer DLC is the talk up-front and Sharkey puts it best when he says “What’s the point?” Sharkey is talking about Weird Worlds again this week.  It sounds like it is basically like the end-game of Spore except on a much smaller scale.  Chris Plante gave it a try and somewhat destroyed his computer– according to him the game may not be responsible though. Sam played some more Killzone 2 and got hit by the system update curse.  PS3 really needs to do something about how that system works.  It shouldn’t...

There are some changes coming to 1UP soon and they all sound very good.  They are listening to the community and tweeking the site to include features that many have been hoping to see.  1UP has recently implemented new boards which are much cleaner and logically organized. As usual the group talks about smaller games, both free and cheap.  Want to here about a turn based RPG wrestling game for the iPhone, give this one a listen. There is an interview about the upcoming downloadable Battlefield 1943.  As a game for Xbox Live Arcade and PSN it...

The group is talking about the What’s in the Box video that surfaced last week.  There was a lot of speculation that it was a viral video to promote Half Life 3 or something coming from Valve, but that has since been debunked.  It’s a cool video with a lot of atmosphere, but if you hate the filming style of Cloverfield skip this one as well. Sam Kennedy leaves halfway through the cast and things devolve from there, in a good way.  There is plenty of random philosophy, bad puns and plenty of random reader questions.  Chris Plante...

Former 1UPer Philip Kollar from Rebel FM is on and he is answering a few questions from the 1UP boards.  The questions range from what exactly he would like to be doing within the industry to childhood digressions. There is a good discussion about the merits of Sonic actually being able to be done well in 3D and how the old-school 2D versions weren’t able to be as memorable as other classic games simply because of the speed of the gameplay.  This leads into a discussion of the revival of 2D games and what freedoms DLC and downloadable games...

The group played Killzone 2 for this week’s episode.  They keep saying that they had fun and liked it, but the overall impression you get after hearing them talk about it is less the great. Sharkey’s “Recession Gaming” segment is a nice part of the podcast.  He is talking about Team Fortress 2D this week and everyone seems to like it quite a bit.  He even goes so far as to call it better than Team Fortress 2 for those that want a less intensive experience. In another feature, Armchair Design, the topic of ideas for Portal...

In the first official episode of 1UP’s new Good Grief podcast Anthony Gallegos joins to answer some questions from the fans. With Scott Sharkey on the cast we get a lot of dirty anecdotes and talk of games that are all very low budget and mostly not very good.  He is definitely a unique voice though and is a welcome member of the cast. If you are looking for hard-hitting gaming discussion, this is not it.  But if you just want to listen to a lot of funny stories and jokes with gaming as a context, look no further. There is no iTunes link...

In the inaugural episode of 1UP’s newly formed Good Grief headed-up by Tina Sanchez, the crew, including Chris Plante from UGO, is discussing the show and the type of segments they will be doing.  This is technically labeled episode 0 according to Tina’s twitter, so it is something of a test show. A great story here about about Sam Kennedy drunk-buying a TV.  If this podcast encourages these kinds of stories, consider it a regular around here. The second half of this 1st podcast is dedicated to talking about the whole 1UP/UGO situation. ...
