The HotSpot 10/13/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games850 days ago

Uncharted 2 is up first this week and is still being praise, but Brutal Legend gets the most time at the beginning of this week’s HotSpot. This is a Tim Schafer game so the writing and story are entertaining the guys to a large extent as expected. The multiplayer also gets the thumbs up here though so it sounds like the game isn’t completely reliant on its narrative. It’s available today so do yourself a favor and pick it up. Guitar Hero Van Halen has started shipping out to those that pre-orded Guitar Hero 5 and it sounds like...

The HotSpot 09/08/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games885 days ago

As everyone, PAX stuff starts this one off, but GameSpot didn’t really attend the expo so not too much time is spent on it other than trends of the show.  GameSpot held a bracketed tournament that pitted many of the greatest game heroes against each other and then the winners were voted on by readers.  It’s a fun feature so go check out the results. Tomorrow is the 10 years anniversary of the Dreamcast so the HotSpot crew took the chance to talk about their memories of the system and generally talk about their favorite games.  In...

The HotSpot 08/25/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games899 days ago

It’s  a down-tempo edition of the HotSpot with no Tom Mc Shea or Tom Magrino this week.  First up is Batman Arkham Asylum which has proven to be a hit, with Justin Calvert giving it a 9.0 on GameSpot.  The fighting mechanics are simplistic, but still manage to be fun and the stealth seems to have been done right.  Wolfenstein doesn’t fare nearly as well. The HotSpot may be last podcast to be touching on the big announcements from Gamescom since their last episode was recorded just before Sony’s conference took place.  The...

The HotSpot 05/19/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games997 days ago

Right at the beginning here we get some hands-on impressions of Terminator: Salvation and Bionic Commando. It doesn”t sound like either if them deliver on too many fronts.  Terminator especially seems to be particularly forgettable with Bionic Commando having some redeeming values. There are some E3 predictions here including an Xbox 360 port of Metal Gear Solid 4, subtitled Oxide.  Also discussed is the potential of a price drop or redesign for the PS3.  PlayStation Home gets some talk time as well, but nobody has anything nice to say...

Giant Bombcast 04-07-2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1039 days ago

The DSi is officially out and the Giant Bombcast guys have theirs in-hand.  The consensus seems to be that the new additions are nothing mind-blowing.  According to Jeff there is good variety of DSiWare games available, but none of them are too good. The Brutal Legend embargo is up and the guys are pretty excited about it.  People were worried about it, but with eye-on gameplay impressions around the net now everyone seems to be pretty high on it.  It sounds like it is doing many things right.  It’s likened to a God of War lite with some...

CO-OP 0003: A Flower For My Valentine

by Jonathan Downin in Games1084 days ago

And let the weekly shows begin.  The CO-OP crew are finally on a weekly schedule.  Looks like we again have a gaming show to look forward to every Friday. The phrase “solid shooter” has been thrown around a lot in reference to F.E.A.R. 2.  It’s used here as well and just comes off as an “okay is good enough” sort of sentiment. Anyone who has been following these guys from 1UP knows, they like their artsy games, and it’s no different here.  Matt even goes as far as to call Flower an “important”...

CO-OP 0001: Reflection Part 2

by Jonathan Downin in Games1106 days ago

The second part of the first episode of CO-OP is up!  The amount of work that has gone into this is pretty amazing.  It’s hard to imagine how things are just going to get better from here as they get the resources and equipment they need. If you played many games this year you can rest assured that a few of those are going to be mentioned here.  Left 4 Dead seems to be the game that everyone loves. If you want this show to go on then I suggest you go and Digg the story at the link below or if you are so inclined leave them a donation on...

Rebel FM — Episode 3 — 01/21/09

by Jonathan Downin in Games1115 days ago

Can we really be up to episode 3 already?  It just goes to show how quickly these guys were on the up-take. The sound quality here is another step up, if still a little echo-y, from the last episode.  The guys got new equipment and you can tell. There is a great discussion on the review process here.  I think 1UP was on the right track when they converted to their letter grade system, but if you ask me, it should be a flat scale with no pluses or minuses.  What is your ideal rating system? This week we’re joined by Geekbox.net’s Ryan Scott...

CO-OP | Episode 1

by Jonathan Downin in Games1115 days ago

Ryan O’Donnell, Matt Chandronait and the team behind the now defunct 1UP Show have started their own production company, Area 5, and have released the first episode of their new video game show CO-OP. It is somewhat in the vein of The 1UP Show with a focus on discussion of games backed up by game footage, but this seems to be a bit of a special first episode with almost all the big guys previously of 1UP sitting in talking about their favorite games of last year. There are some technical issues and it really is only the first half of what...

Giant Bombcast 01-13-2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1123 days ago

First taste test of 2009, and it’s a downer, literally. Yet more of the team from 1UP has infiltrated another podcast.  Former 1Uper AND ex-Gamespotter Giancarlo Varanini is on the show this week with a lot to add. We’re joined by former EGM editor Giancarlo Varanini for discussions of the Windows 7 beta, the future of Tony Hawk, the escalating madness surrounding Bob’s Game, Serena Altschul on PCP, McRib virginity, and more! Runtime – 2:16:42 Link (Giant Bombcast)

The state of 1UP

by Jonathan Downin in Blog, Features, Games1130 days ago

As many of you may have heard, 1UP has been bought by UGO and this means many things, many of which we don’t know yet.  One thing we do know is that The 1UP show is done.  It really is shame to see such a great and unique take on the gaming scene go away.  It was certainly something that made Fridays worth the wait every week for me. It will be interesting to see what happens to the other 1UP productions like 1UP Yours, 1UP FM and LAN Party in the wake of this.  This story will be updated as more information comes in.  We wish everyone ...

1UP FM – 12/15/2008

by Jonathan Downin in Games1152 days ago

The guys recorded this show all in 1 day.  Seeing as this is the most comprehensive weekly gaming podcast around that is quite the feat. This Playstation Home stuff is really blowing up, but it seems like it’s for the wrong reasons.  There isn’t much to do in there.  Is it just a time kill and nothing more?  Maybe it’s just skewed more towards teenagers. Anthony Gallegos brings the folk.  Check it at the 44:30 mark. It’s a PSN symposium! Shane, Alice, and Matt L. join us to go a little more on-depth on Flower, Noby Noby...

The 1UP Show: Episode 12/05/08

by Jonathan Downin in Games1162 days ago

Coming in at a hefty 35:58 this week we get to see and hear about three games this week; 2 big, next-gen affairs and one PS2 game.  One great thing about The 1UP Show is getting so many different perspectives on the games covered. Killzone is looking great, which almost nobody expected and Prince of Persia is beautiful as almost everyone expected.  Persona 4 looks… like an RPG.  Check it out. Killzone 2′s single player gets previewed and we give impressions of Prince of Persia and Persona 4 in this week’s 1UP Show. Runtime –...

1UP FM – 12/01/2008

by Jonathan Downin in Games1166 days ago

The “kid’s table” is back after the Thanksgiving holiday.  The 1UP boys are a little late, but that’s better than not releasing one at all like many others around the net– yes, that’s directed at you IGN. And guys… no more interviews with zombies. Riddled with Mad Turkey Disease, we bring in House of the Dead: Overkill’s product manager Mike Schmitt and a couple of zombie friends (don’t worry, they quiet down eventually) to tell us about the upcoming Wii shooter, Giancarlo and Donahoe sit down...
