/Filmcast Ep. 94 – Clash of the Titans

by Jon Cole in Movies771 days ago

This week’s /Filmcast runs a little shorter than usual, kicking things off with yet another wholehearted recommendation of How To Train Your Dragon.  As subject of last week’s glowing review, the film has continued to do well in the box office, showing one of the lowest percentage decreases of viewers from the first week’s showing to the second week.  With Dave racking up a total of four IMAX-3D viewings and Adam coming in at three, the /Filmcast has collectively spent almost $200 on theatrical viewings on Dreamworks’s...

/Filmcast Ep. 92 – Repo Men

by Jon Cole in Movies, TV786 days ago

This week’s /Filmcast starts off with a ton of television talk, dominated by the recent release of Breaking Bad Season 2 on blu-ray.  Dave cannot heap enough praise on the series, ranking it among the pantheon with The Wire and The Sopranos.  Devindra agrees, though he expresses some disappointment at the tall price on the blu-ray version of the first season, which unfortunately only features seven episodes due to the Writer’s Strike. A thin news segment is led by the big movie news of the week, namely the casting of Chris Evans as...

/Filmcast Ep. 91 – Green Zone

by Jon Cole in Movies792 days ago

Ghost Writer, Roman Polanski’s latest thriller, has garnered mixed opinions throughout the film critic culture, but the /Filmcast is decidedly positive about it.  Devindra compares it to Polanski’s neo-noir Chinatown, saying that the director can bring a lot of finesse and impact to a somewhat unexciting script.  Dave got a chance to check out Armored, an understated heist movie that ended up fairly well executed. The Oscars are hardly news, but due to scheduling, the /Filmcast hasn’t got a chance to talk about them until now. ...

/Filmcast Ep. 90 – Alice in Wonderland

by Jon Cole in Movies, TV798 days ago

Eric Vespe of Ain’t It Cool News joins the podcast this week, largely dominating the “What We’ve Been Watching” segment at the start of the show.  Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom stirs a bit of debate, considering Eric believes the film doesn’t get the attention and respect it deserves.  He makes the argument that the Last Crusade is very derivative of Raiders of the Lost Ark, while Temple of Doom starts from square one with an entertaining experience.  The first segment wraps up with a little bit of television...

/Filmcast Ep. 89 – The Crazies

by Jon Cole in Movies, TV805 days ago

As per usual, Dave starts off the show with movies he’s been watching, beginning with a film called Triangle.  He makes the argument that it has a lot of plot holes but ultimately pays off in many ways, practically “demanding” a second viewing.  Adam got a chance to watch Cop Out, deeming it almost unworthy of criticism considering its aspirations are so lowly. News is short but very comic-centric, the first piece underwhelming the crew by revealing David Goyer’s involvement in the upcoming Superman, Man of Steel screenplay.  Next up...

/Filmcast Ep. 88 – Shutter Island

by Jon Cole in Movies814 days ago

The /Filmcast crew has been dipping into the back catalog this week, with Dave kicking things off with his positive impressions of Cube.  As a slightly dated sci-fi movie, it’s been years since most of the guys have watched Vincenzo Natali‘s cult favorite, but they all have good things to say about both the execution and premise. Morgan Spurlock (of Super-Size Me fame) and Joss Whedon are rumored to be teaming up to produce a Comic-Con documentary, much to the pessimism of Robert Cargill.  His main argument is that some similar ideas...

/Filmcast Ep. 87 – The Wolfman

by Jon Cole in Movies820 days ago

Dan Eckman of Derrick Comedy joins the podcast once again and brings a little bit of video game conversation to a decidedly cinema-focused podcast.  Fortunately, he chooses to talk about Mass Effect 2, obviously impressed with the story continuity between the original and the sequel as well as the weight in the decisions he had to make in his playthrough as Shepard.  What We’ve Been Watching wraps up Adam’s evisceration of Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, going as far as to say that the film’s director, Chris...

/Filmcast Ep. 86 – From Paris with Love

by Jon Cole in Movies, TV827 days ago

As always, the /Filmcast starts with what the guys have been watching, with Devindra kicking things off.  He’s been watching The Dark Knight and has surprisingly found himself slightly disappointed in his second viewing, taking notice of the graceless cutting to minimize violent scenes.  Adam has been really satisfied with the beginning of the final season of Lost, so look out for spoilers around 10:30 – 24:20. Russ Fischer joins the regular /Filmcast crew for the news and review segments, jumping right into discussion of the Academy Award...

/Filmcast Ep. 85 – Edge of Darkness

by Jon Cole in Movies, TV834 days ago

This week’s /Filmcast is unusually dense, with Sundance canceling last week’s show and piling up the backlog.  Steve Weintraub of Collider.com and Dave Chen attended Utah’s indie film festival, prompting them to share their favorite films including Exit Though the Gift Shop and Buried (both of which were picked up for theatrical release). The trailer for Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps starts off the news segment, inspiring a lot of excitement despite the /Filmcast crew’s general disinterest in Shia Lebeouf.  Disney recently shuttered...

/Filmcast Ep. 84 – The Lovely Bones

by Jon Cole in Movies, TV848 days ago

The Winter holidays are long over, so television is finally coming back.  FOX premiered a new show, Human Target, as well as the time-tested 24, the latter of which Dave and Devindra commented on via livestream on Sunday.  Adam also talks briefly about The Book of Eli, which he declares to be a proficient B-movie that has just enough silliness to keep it afloat. News is lacking this week, with the Golden Globes taking the majority of the press’s attention.  However, there was a brief, optimistic update concerning the reboot of the Spiderman...

/Filmcast Ep. 83 – Daybreakers

by Jon Cole in Movies855 days ago

Writer/director Rian Johnson joins the /Filmcast crew in the first segment this week, joining in on a lively debate about Casablanca.  Adam recently got a chance to see the classic, but wasn’t nearly as impressed as he thought he should be.  Just about everyone can agree that it was always more of a populist film than a critical success, though Rian defends the somewhat hokey romance and excellent composition. The James Bond franchise recently saw a major game changer by adopting Daniel Craig and may see another in the future, with news...

/Filmcast Ep. 82 – Sherlock Holmes & Up in the Air

by Jon Cole in Movies868 days ago

This week’s /Filmcast starts as normal with recently watched movies, in this case predominantly discussing A Perfect Getaway.  Though anachronistic in a handful of ways, the guys agree that the film was enjoyable and ultimately more original than not.  Adam wraps up the segment by bringing up his viewing of Avatar in IMAX 3D. At the expense of the Film News segment, the /Filmcast tackles two film’s this week, starting off with Sherlock Holmes. Everyone agrees that Robert Downey Jr. was definitely the strongest offering of this period piece,...

/Filmcast Ep. 81 – Avatar

by Jon Cole in Movies877 days ago

Avatar is under /Filmcast’s microscope this week, with Dave appropriately kicking off the show announcing his recent interview with James Cameron.  He proceeds to talk about Nine, Rob Marshall’s musical-turned-movie which came under plenty of scrutiny in the film critic community.  Gratefully, Dave as well as guest Dan Trachtenberg didn’t think the movie was so bad, though it suffered from the music video style directing with too many quick cuts. The sad news of Brittany Murphy’s death starts of the news, largely dominating the segment. ...

/Filmcast Ep. 80 – Invictus

by Jon Cole in Movies, TV884 days ago

As always, the /Filmcast starts off with Dave’s latest viewing, this week’s being Avatar.  The film will be reviewed next week on the show, but he just wanted to take the opportunity to tell people to watch it.  Dave also talks about Parks and Recreation, a show that started off as a blatant rip-off of The Office and has come into its own through season two.  Devindra has also been watching a lot of television, giving ringing endorsements to Community, Dollhouse and Dexter. The biggest news this week is JJ Abrams is planning on making a film...

/Filmcast Ep. 79 – The Road

by Jon Cole in Movies889 days ago

At the top of this week’s /Filmcast, Dave talks a little bit about the underappreciated Munich.  Battleship Pretension’s Tyler Smith cuts in to talk about It’s a Wonderful Life, which leads into some discussion of older films that absolutely live up to their hype even in the modern film arena. With a short news segment, the guys promptly review this week’s big film, The Road.  Tyler kicks off with some criticism of the narration and pacing, the latter of which could have benefitted from more downtime between major scenes.  Just about...
