Major Nelson Radio – Show #324: Geoff Keighley, Worms 2 and behind the scenes at E3

by Jonathan Downin in Games957 days ago

We get an interview with Geoff Keighly up front here and he is talking about the Game Critic Awards.  There are a lot of great picks here and Geoff always has a lot of interesting commentary. An interview with the Worms 2: Armageddon developer is lackluster.  The game will probably be fun if you like that old-school tanks style gameplay, but Team 17 has lost some goodwill with the latest Leisure Suit Larry game. If you like the inside-baseball information, the interview with Aaron Greenberg is entertaining.  He is the guys that basically planned...

Major Nelson Radio – Show #323: E3 2009 and Iraq

by Jonathan Downin in Games964 days ago

The Major is back after a few crazy week with E3 and then going to Iraq. E spends some time talking about the Xbox dashboard and the recent problems with Xbox Live.  Apparently, the recent downtime was due to some behind the scenes updates in preparation for the next dashboard update which will include many of the features shown at E3.  He also mentions that one of the big focuses is speeding up the dashboard itself. Major Nelson was in Iraq last week and he is talking about his experiences there.  He got to do and see a lot of interesting things...

Out of the Game, Ep. 7: E3

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc970 days ago

Out of the Game continues to be a fresh take on the gaming scene.  Shawn is back talking about not going to E3 this year and what impact that had on his experience.  N’Gai and Robert were at E3 and provide their views on being there and what changes the increasingly broadcasted nature of the show demand. There is a lot more actual game talk on this episode when compared to previous podcasts.  N’Gai is really feeling the potential of motion controls, especially Microsoft’s offering where Shawn and Robert aren’t quite as...

Joystiq Podcast 099 – Post-E3 edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games973 days ago

E3 episode wrap-up has arrived.  Joystiq had a lo of great coverage of E3 this year and they are talking about their thoughts here including who they thought had the best showing.  Spoiler:  the company starts with an M. There is some notable news this week.  The whole Activision suing EA/Double Fine is still pretty crazy.  Also, Max Payne 3 looks to be an even more cynical take on the character, if that’s even possible.  Ready for some bald, dual pistol wielding slow-mo action?  If so, you are in for a treat. The guys are talking about...

The Geekbox: Episode 18

by Jonathan Downin in Games975 days ago

After a week’s absense for E3 the Geekbox crew is back.  In usual fashion, spoilers are not avoided in any way, so if you haven’t seen UP yet you may want to skip the first 20 minutes. E3 is the focus here, but the takes here are fresh as they tend to be on The Geekbox.  The trailer for Star Wars: The Old Republic has galvanized the group with Karen and loving it and Greg feeling like it is not too cool to represent an MMO like that.  It really has to be taken as a “flavor piece.” There is some talk about Project Natal...

at1UP: 06/09/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games976 days ago

There is no real E3 game talk here, all you will find here is self-confessed “stupid crap.” Mike, aka M1 or M-Prime, is talking about some crazy Wii peripherals that he saw at E3 including “knockout gloves” and a Wii bowling ball.  Matt is not happy about 1UP not having its usual E3 booth babe gallery this year. There will be an at1UP special this week on Thursday where Mike and few others sit down with James Mielke to talk about various Mielke life facts and his future which entails becoming a father, going into the development...

The Totally Rad Show | Episode 116 – Fundane

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Movies977 days ago

Believe it or not, the guys do manage to squeeze in 2 movies this week in Pixar’s UP and The Hangover. There is an absolutely insane amount of games covered on this week’s show.  It sounds like the guys more than enjoyed themselves at E3 and managed to find a few games to make each of them almost completely fanatical at some point. Alex completely loses control when talking about Star Wars: The Old Republic.  Jeff is totally excited about Uncharted 2 and Dan is in love with Mass Effect 2. There is not too much actual footage of the...

TWiT 198: Emission Accomplished

by Jonathan Downin in Tech978 days ago

A lot fo talk about the Palm Pre up front and it is not ll universal love.  Leo makes a good point that if the iPhone didn’t exist people would be losing their minds over this phone.  It definitely true, but unfortunately for Palm, the iPhone is around. WWDC is mere hours away at this point and predictions are all of the map.  One thing no one would be surprised to see announced is a new iPhone though.  The rumor mill has been steady on this and it looks like a new, slightly updated iPhone is inevitable.  There is not too much hope for...

Invisible Walls – Episode 60

by Jonathan Downin in Games980 days ago

This week’s episode is, of course, the E3 wrap-up episode wherein the crew talks press conferences. It is interesting how different groups have vastly different opinions, but manage to have similar views within the group.  The Invisible Walls team almost universally agrees that Sony blew it out and trumped Microsoft this E3. GameTrailers has the full Sony press conference offered in HD so if you haven’t seen it yet, go check out it out.  They should have the other 2 up shortly. Special E3 edition! We rate (and berate) the big press...

Listen UP: 06/05/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games980 days ago

It’s a guest inundated affair for Listen Up’s E3 wrap-up with the likes of Adam Sessler, Pete Wanat, Todd Howard and many more stopping by to share their thoughts.  Splinter Cell is getting a lot of love from everyone.  If you just saw the presentation during Microsoft’s press briefing it sounds like there is a lot more going on with the game than you can glean just from that showing. Bayonetta is also a game that is getting quite a bit of attention.  This is quite surprising seeing how so many were labeling it as nothing more...

Engadget Podcast 149 – 06.05.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech980 days ago

Joshua wrote an epic Palm Pre review earlier this week and if you have been listening to the Enadget podcast you know how much he was anticipating the phone.  As it turns out, he almost loves it and even considers it a good competitor to the iPhone.  He spends a good 45 minutes talking about it here. Other than 5 minutes at the end, the rest of the show has the guys discussing E3.  Although we have heard a lot about E3, the perspective here is different enough to make it interesting.  While it’s not too surprising, Microsoft still comes...

Giant Bombcast E3 2009 Day Three

by Jonathan Downin in Games980 days ago

E3 coverage is wrapping up and the Giant Bomb guys are joined by a few more guests to discuss the show floor and talk about the games they haven’t touched upon yet.  Paul Barnett and Carrie Gouskos of Mythic entertainment have a lot of E3 stories to share, including a few including Tim Schafer. Star Wars: The Old Republic sounds like it has a lot of potential.  So many have been clamoring for a good Star Wars MMO that it looks to possibly be the only real potentially successful competitor to World of Warcaft.  Paul has a lot of good things...

CO-OP | Episode 115 – E3 Special 03: Show Floor Tour

by Jonathan Downin in Games981 days ago

This is episode marks the last one for E3.  The guys are roaming the show floor here so we get a chance to see what it’s like out there and get a glimpse of many of the games that caught the crew’s attention. God of War 3 looks ridiculously brutal.  Ready for some bare- hands decapitations?  You will be completely covered here. The PSP Go gets a nice hands-on segment and look better on video than it does in pictures alone.  It looks like it may be a device that isn’t that appealing until you can get your hands on one for yourself. Finally...

Joystiq Podcast E309 – Burrito of Fate edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games981 days ago

Justin had a chance to get his hands on Project Natal and he is very excited about it.  Apparently, the technology works as advertised, but the actual unit looks nothing like how it has been presented.  AT this point it sounds like it is pretty big and cumbersome so it is still a work in progress. Uncharted 2 is being described as “so pretty it is unfair to every other game.”  Star Wars: The Old Republic has a lot of MMO people excited and the guys says that when you play as different character classes within the game the story will...

Giant Bombcast E3 2009 Day Two

by Jonathan Downin in Games981 days ago

Get ready for an absolutely off-the-wall insane podcast.  Leigh Alexander of Gamasutra is on this one and she is full of opinions and love for Kojima and Metal Gear.  Be warned, she is pretty intense, so go into this one with an open mind.  There are some interesting things said about motion controllers, open worlds and intense explanation of the meta parts of MGS4. The conversation starts moving towards some traditional game talk and impressions.  Craig calls on the guys to share their biggest disappointments of the show and Brad gets pounded...
