GWJ Conference Call Episode 165

by Jonathan Downin in Games793 days ago

Things kick-off with Lego Indiana Jones 2 which sounds like it is the best entry in the series yet, and actually has a rather innovative split-screen execution in multiplayer. Dragon Age continues to entertain, as does New Super Mario Bros.Wii. The Left 4 Dead 2 discussion makes a comeback and the opinion here is that the game is quite difficult, but not so much as to diminish the fun. Talk of gaming on the road comes up with a couple of guys traveling a lot lately, and the consensus is that they are more likely to reach for the laptop over other...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 161

by Jonathan Downin in Games821 days ago

Shawn Andrich is back in the driver seat this week for an RPG-heavy show. Dragon Age has had a monopoly on the guys’ game time, and Michael Zenke is sitting-in to contribute his views on the game. Bioware’s marketing leading up to the games release instilled some doubts about the game, but everyone agrees that it is everything that they hoped it would be. Also, all story spoilers are being avoided here, so listen freely. Although Dragon Age was released on consoles and PC, the PC version is the center of attention here. Shawn’s...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 160

The Gamers with Jobs guys have always skewed towards the PC more than many others, so Torchlight is what has the group excited this week. The biggest pulls of this game continue to be its ability to suck you in, along with its $20 price point, and both aspects are duly are appreciated here. Forza 3 has been a surprise hit with the guys, and Uncharted 2 coop gets some negative comments. There is no topic of the week with Rob sitting in for Shawn. Instead, the guys for a more free-form discussion which leads into releases of this holiday season, the...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 151

World of Warcraft starts the conversation off this week.  Although the guys are not regular players of the game, the forthcoming expansion has them excited about the idea of starting a new character and leveling through the new character progression.  They site how much Blizzard has learned about making compelling quests over the past 5 years as a reason that the new character progression will be highly improved and worth checking out. Batman takes up a good chunk of time following the WoW talk with the group universally impressed by the game. ...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 148

by KirePDX in Games913 days ago

Sean and Shawn are back this week, but independent Swedish developer Eskil Steenberg really leads the show with interesting insights on next-gen motion controls, OnLive and game development. No new games covered this week; but Eskil has been trying out Red Faction: Guerrilla; which he thinks is a 7/10 game, but can’t stop playing.  It launches the discussion of flawed games that are impossible to put down, like Red Faction or Counterstrike, and ‘good’ games that no one finishes, like Okami or GTA IV. Eskil wonders if what gamers...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 147

GWJ is missing both Sean and Shawn this week, but a special community guest helps keep the show going as Julian Murdoch hosts and asks if editing tools and user generator content are asking too much from gamers. Since none of the GWJ crew has actually done any modding themselves, community member Todd Robinson, academic director of game design at the Art Institute of California, provides some good points on whether editing tools are a worthwhile investment for developers considering how few players use them, and if user generate content can actually...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 146

by KirePDX in Games927 days ago

This episode is an edited version of a live show from last Saturday that celebrated the three year anniversary of the Gamers with Jobs podcast.  In recognition, they revisited their first topic and discuss game violence while focusing on what has changed in three years; then they answer a number of questions from their live audience. After touching on the Madden 10 demo, and a few other games, they quickly dive into this week’s subject, game violence, to discover they don’t have as much to say as they did three years ago. The perceived...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 142

The guys have a special interview this week with the developers of Dungeons & Dragons Online which has moved to a free-to-play model.  It sounds like there are a lot of cool changes in store and it is pretty exciting to see MMOs move in this direction.  Hopefully some traditional subscription based games will stick around so that we still have a choice though. The Bethesda/id Software and Bioware/Mythic acquisitions are in the spotlight here with the crew adding their 2 cents to the discussion.  Again, things are pretty positive all around. This...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 140

by Jonathan Downin in Games968 days ago

The Sims 3 gets some time at the beginning here.  Not all of the guys are that interested in ait, but Julian seems to be having a good time with it. Tiger Woods Wii is getting a lof praise.  It sounds like Wii MotionPlus really adds a lot to the experience.  At $60 with MotionPlus packed in it is a good deal as well. The discussion of AAA games is interesting.  Do you consider a game a AAA game if it is bad?  An answer to this question is Spore.  It was somewhat critically panned, but it was still a blockbutser, AAA game wasn’t it? Covered...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 137

by Jonathan Downin in Games990 days ago

All of the guys attended the self-titled rabbitcon this past week and while they were all together they took the opportunity hold a live episode on Ustream, this is the recorded evidence of what went down.  For the uninitiated, rabbitcon is basically a meet-up of the guys and some friends at Julian’s place in New England for a few days of drinking and gaming. A good chunk of this podcast is spent talking about board games.  Since the group was together and had a lot of people around they took the opportunity to play a lot of board games,...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 135

by Jonathan Downin in Games1004 days ago

With free-to-play, microtransaction based games gaining steam, the guys are discussing Battlefield Heroes and Free Realms.  It is very cool that games of this quality are being released for free. Gaming aversions is the topic of the week and once everyone voices their opinion almost every genre of game you can think of gets a mention.  There is an unsurprising number of Japanese style game types listed which just goes to show how the consumer market has really moved away from traditional Japanese game design. Another topic that comes up is the...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 134

by Jonathan Downin in Games1011 days ago

Free Realms has just gone live, and if you are not aware, it is a free to play MMO from Sony.  As is becoming more and more popular it is based on the model that you can play all you want for free, but if you want certain game items and various other things you have to pay for them.  This is one of the biggest releases yet to try this model and according to the GWJ crew it is surprisingly good. The big segment this week is a sit down talk with Jerry “Tycho” Holkins of Penny Arcade.  Cory had a chance to grab Tycho for a while and...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 133

by Jonathan Downin in Games1018 days ago

Left 4 Dead’s survival mode is recently out and the consensus here is that is pretty insanely hard, maybe too hard.  The guys lament the fact that there were no new scenarios included in this DLC, but come around to the fact that it is free, so how much can you really complain. The Hunter crops back up into the conversation this week and the guys, for the most part, are still pretty enamored with it. Jason Kapalka, of PopCap, is the big draw this week.  PopCap has almost single-handedly brought the idea of casual gaming into the gaming landscape...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 132

by Jonathan Downin in Games1025 days ago

DemiGod gets a lot of time on this week’s cast and for good reason. The game sounds very solid, but due to some piracy and early release issues, thanks to Gamestop, the multiplayer is suffering. Game endings is the topic of the week and there are some interesting points brought up.  Halo, Shadow of the Collosus, Bioshock, Metal Gear Solid and Fallout 3 are all brought up within the discussion.  How do you feel about the topic?  Are you unhappy with game endings? The iPhone/iPod Touch discussions really heats up with a listener question...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 130

by Jonathan Downin in Games1039 days ago

The guys are talking about some pretty obscure games up-front, as they tend to do.  These guys are really great at playing and talking about games which you probably haven’t heard of and you can’t beat Sean Sands straight talking attitude. The topic of the week is “who would you like to sit down and have dinner with?”  Peter Molyneux, John Carmack, Adam Sessler, Jack Thompson, William Shatner, John Romero, etc.  How all these people come up in the same conversation is amazing. This week the crew talks about which gaming...
