Mobcast 54: CO-OP on Co-op

by Alex Martin in Games631 days ago

Ryan O’Donnell and Cesar Quintero of Area 5 media, producers of CO-OP, are hosted by Bitmobbers Demian and Brett. Appropriately, the theme for this episode is co-operative gaming and Demian starts with his topic — games the panel only plays co-operatively. Some games are just better when you have friends there with you, like Phantasy Star Online, which Ryan seems to think is the same offline as on, but is transformed when your friends are there to check out your loot. Ryan has a cool idea — more games should have two-part weapons...

CO-OP Live: Heavy Rain

by Derek Lavigne in Games707 days ago

To start off the show this week, Cesar and Matt discuss their time at the Nintendo press summit from last week. They both seem very excited about WarioWare D.I.Y. The game seems to have a very unique take on the old mini-game collection formula, letting you created and “ship” your own mini-games inside of a prepackaged world. They also highlight Sin and Punishment: Star Successor on the Wii which is a completely new take on the rail shooter convention and a few of the upcoming Wii Art Style games. They wrap up the Nintendo segment showing...

CO-OP Live 303: Sooo Indie!

by Derek Lavigne in Games714 days ago

Another live show and the Area5 team keeps on improving week after week. First on the docket on this (mostly) indie game episode is the recently released The Misadventures of P.B. Winterbottom on XBLA. Like most of the game industry, CO-OP has nothing but praise for this game and Ryan plays some of it live for the viewers instead of relying on timing pre-recorded clips like the previous weeks. Overall opinions seem to be that it is a must buy for fans of puzzle games. A recorded segment is throw in next with Jason and Cesar discussing Skate 3, which...

CO-OP Live: Bioshock 2 and X10 Previews

by Derek Lavigne in Games721 days ago

Week 2 of the live show brings a few changes as Area5 settles in to their new format. The packed couch is gone, replaced with individual chairs which still doesn’t feel quite right. Jay and Matt are up first to discuss Bioshock 2 while Ryan sifts through twitter questions to be asked at the latter part of the segment instead of lumping them at the tail end of of the show. As a whole, they don’t seem to have much negative to say about the game, citing improved sound, combat, and a changed environment. Matt does mention he wished the underwater...

CO-OP Live: Testing 1,2…

by Derek Lavigne in Games726 days ago

It’s the very first episode of CO-OP Live and seeing the guys on a set every week is going to take some getting used to. To ease in, they structure this episode much like previous CO-OP episodes but with pre-recorded video and a script to match it up with. Mass Effect 2 is the topic of conversation for this week and with each of the guys playing a different class in the game, it makes for interesting conversation with several different points of view. After a quick stop on some of the ways the previous game influences this one, combat and...

CO-OP — Episode 315: Reflections 2009 Part 2

by Derek Lavigne in Games744 days ago

This week picks up right where last week left off, with more discussion on favorite games of 2009. For those who didn’t tune in last week, the CO-OP guys have assembled a group of some of their more regular guests for this discussion. Downloadable titles are first focus of conversation, with David Ellis mentioning that Flower had what he felt were the best Sixaxis controls of any PS3 game. A quick stop on the quirky Noby Noby Boy leads to Dan Hsu talking about his love/hate relationship with one of my favorite games of last year, ‘Splosion...

CO-OP — Episode 314: Reflections 2009 Part 1

by Derek Lavigne in Games751 days ago

It may be well into the new year, but the guys at Area5 haven’t forgotten about 2009 just yet. This week they lapse from their normal formula and head back to the format of the very first episode of CO-OP, a bunch of friends sitting around talking about their favorite games of the year. After a quick stop on games with twitter integration, open world games become the first focus of conversation. David Ellis of 1up cites Infamous as one of his favorites, while Kat Bailey recounts her first experience with Red Faction: Guerrilla.  Two heavy...

CO-OP — Episode 313: Time Capsule

by Derek Lavigne in Games758 days ago

After a couple of weeks off, CO-OP is back in regular form this week, albeit with only two games. First up is Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes, a strange puzzle/strategy RPG for the DS. Ryan, Jay, and Cesar all seem very high on the game, praising it for having a large amount of options and great multiplayer. Ryan praises the game for presenting a large amount of information simply, but to be honest even after watching the segment I’m still not quite sure exactly what this game is all about. For the second half of the show, Ryan and Cesar...

CO-OP – Episode 310: Android vs. iPhone. Fight!

by Jonathan Downin in Games778 days ago

Little Big Planet for PSP is up first this week with Ryan and Matt pouring the love on pretty thick. At the very least, it look like the PSP version compromises little to get the PS3 experience in your hand. The CO-OP team was also represented at the recent Mass Effect 2 preview event, and The Totally Rad Show’s Jeff Cannata is standing in to discuss what they saw. There are no real spoiler here, and with a focus on the art of the game, this segment provides a perspective on the game that you may not have seen before. Avatar: The Game is last...

CO-OP – Episode 309: Santa Cruzin’

by Jonathan Downin in Games785 days ago

The 1st game up this week is The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks and everyone is positive on it. Ryan felt like the train over-world section was monotonous, but the main dungeon that you constantly return to is ever-evolving and fun. PixelJunk Shooter is up next and despite its short length, it offers a fun, physics-filled experience. The 2 player gameplay adds another layer of complexity with the different weapons playing off of each other well. There is certainly some griefing potential here. A relatively unknown indie game, Super Meat Boy, is...

CO-OP – Episode 308: Go Outside and Play

by Jonathan Downin in Games793 days ago

It is a light week of games with only 2 titles on the show. Things kick-off with Assassin’s Creed: Bloodlines for PSP. Ryan and Matt are discussing the game and it sounds like it is really only for die-hard fans of the series. The PSP just can’t quite handle a game of this scope. Tony Hawk: Ride is the only other game this week, and the discussion here steers away from being overly negative. Cesar and Jason are skateboarders, so they provide a unique perspective, but there isn’t much new here that hasn’t been said elsewhere....

CO-OP – Episode 307: The Jason Show 2: Outtake Boogaloo

by Jonathan Downin in Games800 days ago

As announced last week, this week’s episode is an interim entry as the guys are on vacation. Jason is heading things up for the second time with his self-title show, but his segments are kept more minimal than they were the first time around. There is 1 regular game segment this week in New Super Mario Bros.Wii. Bitmob‘s Dan Hsu is sitting down with Cesar and composer Paul Greenleaf to share their opinions on the game, and there is nothing too new here. The hectic gameplay commands the bulk of the discussion, but Dan, as always, has...

CO-OP – Episode 306: Assassin’s Creed 2 Review Special

by Jonathan Downin in Games806 days ago

This week is completely dedicated to Assassin’s Creed 2, so you know that this is a huge release. The first entry in the series was a break-out success in sales, but is remembered as a game that just didn’t deliver on its promises. Things are certainly better this time around with Ryan calling it “One of the finest games over made.” As tends to be the approach with CO-OP, the guys are not pulling to many punches in the spoiler territory, so if you care about the narrative, be aware that story details are throughout the discussion....

CO-OP – Episode 305: We’re Oscar Mike

by Jonathan Downin in Games814 days ago

Dragon Age: Origins is up first this week and Demian Linn and Jason Wilson of Bitmob and joining the love-fest. The characterization, and story to a lesser extent, are the big draws here. It does sound like the PC version is definitely the way to go with the interface hampering enjoyment somewhat in the console versions. 1UP’s Richard Li joins Cesar and Jason Bertrand to discuss DJ Hero. The game gets a surprising amount of time when the final determination comes down to the title’s steep learning curve and generally inaccessibility. Modern...

CO-OP – Episode 304: 3D or not 3D

by Jonathan Downin in Games820 days ago

The Ballad of Gay Tony starts this week’s episode. Tyler Barber is standing-in and giving his perspective on the latest and last GTAIV expansion. It looks like there are enough new things in the game to make it worth checking out, but this feels like one of those times when CO-OP may be a little too positive. Torchlight is up next and Arthur Gies joins Matt to discuss this Diablo-successor. They hit on the genre refinements that the game introduces, and express their surprise at the variety of the environments. This is a game that has been...
