Joystiq Podcast 097 – Perfect Strangers edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1002 days ago

Finally we get episode 1 of the Ludwig Kietzmann show.  Justin does get added to the mix half way through though.  Richard Mitchell from X3F is filling a spot along with David Hinkle. With the NPDs out this week Ludwig shares the fact that Riddick sold over 100k units.  This comes as a surprise to a lot of people since it dropped in price so quickly and the brand awareness is pretty slow.  Outside of all the PR speak, that is pretty good, though probably not as much as they would have hoped. Although it was a good effort, the show just isn’t...

Giant Bombcast 04-28-2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1019 days ago

First up this week is Jeff dropping some details about his trip to London.  He has all of the details about Fallout 3: Broken Steel.  Apparently this expansion pack will actually comepletely change the end of the game, not just let you continue.  Weirdly enough, Fallout: New Vegas does not enter the conversation. Six Days in Fallujah may not be coming out.  After all of the controversy surrounding the setting and context of the game, Konami pulled out and will no longer be publishing the game.  People had a lot of reservations about the game,...

Rebel FM Episode 15

by Jonathan Downin in Games1023 days ago

The free update for Left 4 Dead has come out and the guys are talking about it.  Tyler is pretty new to the game so he is excited about it and has quite a bit to share. Arthur has been playing through Chronicles of Riddick and is enjoying it to some extent.  It sounds like the the shooting doesn’t feel too good, but the atmosphere and characterization is top notch. The topic this week is centered around parents and experiences growing up playing games.  It’s easy to forget that many people had very different childhoods from your own...

Giant Bombcast 04-21-2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1026 days ago

Jeff is on his way back from an event that took place in London this week so he is not here for this one.  With him gone there is some absolutely ridiculous discussion going on.  Could 20 bears kill a T-rex?  How many great white sharks would there have to be to take down a T-rex?  These are just a taste. Vinny and Brad have been playing through the new Riddick game and are liking it quite a bit.  Brad says to definitely play through the Butcher Bay portion before hitting the Dark Athena content.  They are still playing Resident Evil 5 as...

CO-OP | Episode 107 – Mother Mission’s Fruits

by Jonathan Downin in Games1027 days ago

Grand Theft Auto is the first game in the show this week and there are a lot of good things being said about it.  The art style that Rockstar chose for the game suits the DS perfectly and makes a whole lot of gameplay situations possible.  It would have been an easy cash-in, but they really went that extra mile. You know that the iPhone has become a legitamate gaming platform once it takes up a whole segment on CO-OP.  It really is an exciting platform and a lot of gaming value eith games that are almost underpriced. The new Riddick game has...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 131

by Jonathan Downin in Games1033 days ago

You probably haven’t heard much about it, but the guys are talking about The Hunter this week.  It is free and is a first person deer hunting game that is actually very compelling.  Don’t let the fact that it is a hunting game deter you, it sounds like it really breaks out of the genre providing a fresh experience.  Oh, and it is gorgeous. Chronicles of Riddick gets some time here and it safe to say that it comes off pretty well.  If a 7 hour single session play of the game doesn’t vouch for the quality what does? The guys...

Joystiq Podcast 092 – Sequel edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games1037 days ago

BioShock 2 gets covered this week and it looks– like BioShock.  This can be either a great thing or a bad thing depending on what you wanted from a sequel to one of the best games of 2007. Assassin’s Creed 2 is arguably much more exciting than BioShock 2.  As Justin says, the approach here is the better one when it comes to sequel.  It’s a new setting, 15th century Italy, but the character still provides the Assassin’s Creed vibe.  Make no mistake people, this will be one of the biggest games of the year. This particularly...

The HotSpot 04/07/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1040 days ago

It sounds like the new Riddick game is not living up to the greatness of the first one.  Everyone was pulling for this one seeing as the first one was amazing, especially considering it come from a relatively unheard-of, small studio. Some sad news this week with the word that Sega’s Yu Suzuki, of Virtua Fighter, Outrun, Space Harrier, Shenmue, etc. fame, has gone further down the ladder within Sega.  The crew here has some things to say about this and it really is a shame that we probably won’t see his progressive and unique ideas...

Major Nelson Radio – Show #311 : The Mini Unscheduled Show

by Jonathan Downin in Games1070 days ago

The Maj has been traveling so this week’s show is a short one.  The guys touch on a few things and then move onto Microsoft’s latest XBLA inniciative called “Days of Arcade.”  MS did something like this last summer, but contrary to what they say, that one yeilded some bigger games than this one will. That’s it.  Nothing to interesting or exciting. Not a normal show…e and I got together for a quick catch up. This show has none of the normal show features. We’ll be back to a regular show next week. Runtime –...

Invisible Walls – Episode 44

by Jonathan Downin in Games1093 days ago

If you are into comics this is an episode not to miss.  There are so many comic games coming out. Everyone that talks about DC Universe Online always has good things to say about it.  From the footage it looks very MMOish.  Aesthetically it looks pretty bland. More hardcore games than we are used to are coming to Wii.  The announcement of Dead Space coming to the Wii is really interesting.  The game is great on the 360 and PS3 and the addition of wiimote control could be interesting. A double-sized Comic-Con 09 episode with a dash of Riddick. Runtime...

Xbox 360 Fancast 102 — The Lost Episode

by Jonathan Downin in Games1104 days ago

It has taken them a while, but it seems like the Joystiq Xbox guys have finally fixed most of the issues with their podcast feed.  The transition wasn’t exactly smooth, but the problem are being taken care of. As the release of Halo Wars approaches Ensemble Studios is no more.  We will see how well the game does, but one things is for sure, Ensemble Studios will be missed. X3F (that’s the Xbox 360 Fancast) is back once again with a brand new episode. Before we get into the festivities, an announcement: The iTunes feed is up and running...

Invisible Walls – Episode 39

by Jonathan Downin in Games1128 days ago

Are people really still interested in the DC comic characters, besides Batman?  I can’t believe it.  Maybe DC Universe for PS3 can turn that around. I love Marcus Beer/Grumpy-McGrump.  He has a clear vision about what he likes and he is generally on target.  I think people usually like rather critical points of view , me included. Still love that game footage running throughout. We look forward to the underdogs of 2009. Runtime – 26:41 Link (Invisible Walls)

1UP FM – 12/29/2008

by Jonathan Downin in Games1140 days ago

The 1UP crew is talking about the games of 2009.  More so than is usual it seems we don’t know too much about what is coming next year.  Hopefully there are a lot of games that haven’t been announced yet. Is Final Fantasy XIII really going to release next year?  I can’t see that happening.  I’m with Philip on Mafia II.  The first one was great and the second one looks to be a worthy follow-up.  It’s one of those games that kinda slipped through the cracks so if you haven’t played it, grab a copy of the PC...

1UP FM – 12/08/2008

by Jonathan Downin in Games1160 days ago

Would anyone have ever guessed that Vin Diesel could start a game studio and that it would actually be a super sweet developer?  That guy knows what’s up.  Could we possibly have the first video game star on our hands here? Phillip Kollar and Nick Suttner deliver week after week with their diverse and groundbreaking take on the weekly game podcast.  Diverse topics, yet with a fresh format bring the goods every week.  Evil Avatar doesn’t know what they have lost… Edit: The interview with the Riddick team is really great.  DEFINITELY...
