CO-OP – Episode 308: Go Outside and Play

by Jonathan Downin in Games795 days ago

It is a light week of games with only 2 titles on the show. Things kick-off with Assassin’s Creed: Bloodlines for PSP. Ryan and Matt are discussing the game and it sounds like it is really only for die-hard fans of the series. The PSP just can’t quite handle a game of this scope. Tony Hawk: Ride is the only other game this week, and the discussion here steers away from being overly negative. Cesar and Jason are skateboarders, so they provide a unique perspective, but there isn’t much new here that hasn’t been said elsewhere....

CO-OP – Episode 307: The Jason Show 2: Outtake Boogaloo

by Jonathan Downin in Games802 days ago

As announced last week, this week’s episode is an interim entry as the guys are on vacation. Jason is heading things up for the second time with his self-title show, but his segments are kept more minimal than they were the first time around. There is 1 regular game segment this week in New Super Mario Bros.Wii. Bitmob‘s Dan Hsu is sitting down with Cesar and composer Paul Greenleaf to share their opinions on the game, and there is nothing too new here. The hectic gameplay commands the bulk of the discussion, but Dan, as always, has...

CO-OP – Episode 305: We’re Oscar Mike

by Jonathan Downin in Games816 days ago

Dragon Age: Origins is up first this week and Demian Linn and Jason Wilson of Bitmob and joining the love-fest. The characterization, and story to a lesser extent, are the big draws here. It does sound like the PC version is definitely the way to go with the interface hampering enjoyment somewhat in the console versions. 1UP’s Richard Li joins Cesar and Jason Bertrand to discuss DJ Hero. The game gets a surprising amount of time when the final determination comes down to the title’s steep learning curve and generally inaccessibility. Modern...

CO-OP – Episode 304: 3D or not 3D

by Jonathan Downin in Games823 days ago

The Ballad of Gay Tony starts this week’s episode. Tyler Barber is standing-in and giving his perspective on the latest and last GTAIV expansion. It looks like there are enough new things in the game to make it worth checking out, but this feels like one of those times when CO-OP may be a little too positive. Torchlight is up next and Arthur Gies joins Matt to discuss this Diablo-successor. They hit on the genre refinements that the game introduces, and express their surprise at the variety of the environments. This is a game that has been...

CO-OP – Episode 303: Halloween

by Jonathan Downin in Games830 days ago

iPhone games are up first this week with a focus on the rhythm genre. The iPhone has always been a good platform for this type of game, and with the recent release of Rock Band, it is only getting better. In addition to Rock Band, Jason and Matt discuss Guitar Rock 2 and the Tap Tap Revenge series. Jay and Ryan are talking about Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time and Ryan found himself having a good time after getting past the slow-burn opening. While the tone is positive overall, the consensus is that Insomniac needs to do something new with...

CO-OP – Episode 302: Animated

by Jonathan Downin in Games837 days ago

The busy Fall release schedule has begun, but you wouldn’t know it by this week’s episode. Matt starts things off with the indie RTS Eufloria. The game is stylistically captivating and Matt touts its simplistic gameplay as a strength. This may not have a wide appeal, but it’s nice to see indie games getting a chance with services like Steam. iPhone game take up the middle section this week. The guys pack 3 games into the segment which seems to make a lot more sense with smaller games like this. Canabalt has Ryan enjoying the bare-bones...

CO-OP – Episode 301: An Age of Wonder

by Jonathan Downin in Games844 days ago

It’s the start of a new season of CO-OP, and it’s the same– but that’s not a bad thing. New Super Mario Bros.Wii starts things off and the guys are excited about its multiplayer prospects. They may be going a little far by saying that it is like Super Mario Bros. 4 though. Matt takes over the 2nd segment with a trip to the office of Gaijin Games to interview the indie developer about their forthcoming WiiWare game, Bit.Trip Void. While the game probably isn’t on many people’s radar, it is cool to see an indie...

CO-OP – Episode 217: Special

by Jonathan Downin in Games851 days ago

This is the last episode of the “season” for CO-OP and there is not much new here. Cesar was in Japan for the Tokyo Game Show and the small clips he shot while there make up the only new content this week. This is another “Japan experience” type show where there is very little game content. Instead, we get to watch Cesar eat curry, visit Don Quijote and generally walk the streets of Tokyo. The game segments this week are repeats of Street Fighter 4 and GTA 4: The Lost & Damned. These appeared in the last show before the...

CO-OP – Episode 214: Swine Flu Containment Unit

by Jonathan Downin in Games872 days ago

Jason and Matt attended PAX this year and they took time to check in with 1UP alum, and now Microsoft’s XNA community manager, Kathleen Sanders and talk Xbox Indie Games. These games often get overlooked, but there are some notable and interesting looking titles available with a few of them are shown off here. The Beatles: Rock Band takes up the second spot this week with a huge cast of 1UP favorites coming in to talk about the game. There is not too much said here that hasn’t been said elsewhere, but seeing a big group playing the game...

CO-OP – Episode 213: Dreamcast: Ten Swirling Years

by Jonathan Downin in Games879 days ago

The CO-OP guys deliver their love letter to the Dreamcast this week with there Dreamcast 10th anniversary episode.  It includes the crew sharing some of their favorite games and memories of the system, footage of the most notable/classic games and Dreamcast stories from PAX attendees. Sonic Adventure, Samba de Amigo, Soul Calibur, Virtua Tennis, Jet Grind Radio, House of the Dead, Crazy Taxi, Shenmue 1 & 2, Skies of Arcadia and Seaman, they’re all represented here.  This is a great way to see what gaming was about 10 years ago. For some...

CO-OP | Episode 212 – Devoted to Mode 7

by Jonathan Downin in Games886 days ago

Batman starts out this episode.  You probably aren’t going to be getting to much information that you don’t already know out of this segment with all of the coverage this game has received, but you may get a better feel for what people have been talking about with all the great footage interspersed. The middle segment has almost become the iPhone segment.  This week is no different with Cesar and Jason talking about Game Loft’s Gangstar: West Coast Hustle.  It is a pure and simple GTA: San Andreas clone, but it is done well. ...

CO-OP | Episode 211 – 1994 Part 2

by Jonathan Downin in Games893 days ago

First up this week is Wolfenstein.  This has been a game that seems to have caught many by surprise.  There was very little hype leading up to its release, but it has turned out surprisingly solid.  Although it does look to take some of the better mechanics from other games, with its focus on shooting things pan out into an enjoyable, if not somewhat old-school, experience. Spider for the iPhone takes the second slot and it doesn’t have the guys as enamored as past iPhone games.  Everyone feels like the gameplay is a bit repetitive, but...

CO-OP | Episode 210 – Laundry Day

by Jonathan Downin in Games900 days ago

Starting out this week’s CO-OP is Little Kings Story for Wii.  For reasons unknown, this game has gotten a lot of coverage in the mainstream press.  It seems like there is some intriguing strategy gameplay mechanics in play here, but it doesn’t use the Wii’s unique aspects in any way.  This isn’t a game that would be getting this amount of time if it were a 360 or PS3 game, so it’s a little baffling why it has caught the attention that it has. Woldenstein RPG is the iPhone game of the week and it looks like it suits...

CO-OP | Episode 209 – The Jason Show

by Jonathan Downin in Games907 days ago

This week’s CO-OP is a little different than usual.  The first segment has the guys giving their impressions of the new Mythic Disc maps for Halo ODST.  While they look good, with a fan favorite returning from Halo 2, there just doesn’t seem to be that much to be excited about.  The multiplayer is the same package from Halo 3 and the comments here come off as a little overly positive. The iPhone game, Harbor Master, takes up the second segment.  If you have ever played Flight Control, this formula should be pretty familiar.  Harbor...

CO-OP | Episode 208 – The Typewriter

by KirePDX in Games914 days ago

CO-OP isn’t known for its dance choreography, but the guys give a little song-and-dance at the start of this week’s episode; which is bookended with slightly stranger skits than usual. However, they find the time to revisit Gears of War 2 and Wipeout HD for some new DLC, and they have some fun with Fat Princess. When they can get past its server issues, Fat Princess is charming the group with its simple gameplay and great class-based design. While the basic mechanics are relatively simple, everyone is having fun discovering new capture-the-princess...
