Mobcast Episode 33

by Jon Cole in Games788 days ago

John Davison joins the Mobcast, hitting it off by lending some insight into Jason Wilson’s question of whether or not we’re actually having fun while playing games.  Modern Warfare 2 and Assassin’s Creed 2 have provoked some conversation about mature storylines, graphical fidelity, and other technical aspects, but the guys try to tackle why talk strays so often from the simple idea of fun. Game of the Year comes up next, with John pondering the validity of some choices due to an inherent concern for credibility. Aaron also brings up how...

The Geekbox: Episode 34

by Jonathan Downin in Games855 days ago

Karen Chu is not on this week, but her husband Patrick Joynt is and he is a worthy stand-in. If it wouldn’t prove to be weird with Karen and Patrick on we would call for him to be a regular. Patrick starts this one off with some PSPgo criticism and points to the Ars Technica review which pulls no punches as his go-to overview. Discussions about the Uncharted 2 review scores and Shadow Complex get blown-through before the group get into their forte of covering comics and tabletop games. The talk turns to predictions on the best games of the...

Idle Thumbs 39: Video Game Baby

by Jonathan Downin in Games904 days ago

WIZARD!  This episode starts with some praise for Xbox 360′s new Games on Demand service.  It seems like people are increasingly reluctant to pick up physical copies of games.  It’s obvious that at least, if a game is just a button press away that people are more likely to try something that they are only somewhat interested in. After the classic “Horse Bag” discussion last week, the guys are talking about more peripherals that are designed to read input directly from your body.  This includes a patent coming out of Sony...

Listen UP: 07/03/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games952 days ago

Robert Ashley is on this week and even though he is a regular on a few podcasts at this point, he would be a strong permenant 4th chair addition to Listen UP. John shares a great story about a Sims 3 experience this week.  Although there is a strong stigma against the Sims franchize within the the gaming sphere, it really offers something that is unique and puts creativity into the player’s hands. The big topic this week is music in games.  The guys approach this topic from a lot of different angles and there are a lot of interesting points...

Player One Podcast | Episode 134 – The Graphics are a Little Jackée

by Jonathan Downin in Games999 days ago

The rumored redesigned PS3 is again not getting much appreciation.  Nobody seems to like the presumed new look, but the prospect of a PS3 that doesn’t use the Spiderman font is something that does excite! Everyone goes through their games of the week, but the conversation picks up a lot at the end with talk moving onto Burnout Paradise and its new Cops and Robbers mode, Fat Princess and 1 Vs. 100.  It sounds like Fat Princess holds a lot of potential for some future multiplayer action. 1 Vs. 100 looks to be a very fresh take on how to handle...

Player One Podcast | Episode 133 – Pleased to Meet You, Soulless Automaton

by Jonathan Downin in Games1006 days ago

There is some serious hate directed towards the iPhone this week, not so much from the guys, but from a caller.  It funny how some are so negative about gaming on the iPhone to the point that it comes off as almost defensive.  Anything that widens the gaming audience is a positive thing. The lamenting of the downfalls of Resident Evil 5 and Killzone 2 goes on.  Both of these seem to have equally underwhelmed a lot of the people that were looking forward to them. The guys have some hands-on impressions of the InFamous demo and not all is well. ...

Xbox 360 Fancast 105 — Mythic proportions

by Jonathan Downin in Games1082 days ago

The big talk here is Halo Wars and the Joystiq Review written by Richard.  It’s starting to sound like a broken record around here every time a big game comes out as everyone talks about them, but there is not much more to say about the game.  If you like RTSs on console, get it; if you like Halo maybe get it; if you like RTSs on PC, rent it; all others forget it. Xav attended a Halo Wars launch event and got a crack at the Mythic map pack.  It’s sounds like there will be some fun forge stuff in there.  The “Sandbox”...

Rebel FM — Episode 7 — 02/18/09

by Jonathan Downin in Games1087 days ago

The big news up front here is that Nick Suttner is heading to Sony to be a “product evaluator.” It really is pretty amazing how Burnout Paradise is still getting coverage.  Those Criterion guys are geniuses for how they decided to manage the DLC for that game. Topic of the week in this episode is a discussions of mature content in games.  This is a very timely discussion with the nudity in GTAIV: The Lost and the Damned.  The consensus seems to be that games, just like any other medium, have to earn their adult moments for them to...

What They Play 009: The one with all the Flower talk

by Jonathan Downin in Games1088 days ago

We have another new addition to the site in What They Play.  This podcast is by John Davison, former editorial director of 1UP, and founder of WhatTheyPlay.com.  What They Play has the tagline: “the parent’s guide to video games,” and skews more casual than the 1UPs and IGNs of the world. As the games industry evolves, it is important that we cover the way things are headed, and that means not ignoring the casual space. If you have ever listened to 1UP Yours (now ListenUP) you know John Davison.  His approach here originates...

Listen UP – 02/13/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1092 days ago

The second episode of Listen UP is out, and it is as great as 1UP Yours.  Actually, it basically is 1UP Yours.  There really is nothing here to differentiate itself from 1UP Yours other than he name change, but that’s a good thing if you ask me. If you have been interested in inFAMOUS and Prototype, but have had trouble distinguishing which is which, this is the episode for you.  Garnett saw both of them and goes pretty in-depth about each. Matt Leone has seen God of War 3 and it sounds like it’s going to be good.  The PS3 really...

Rebel FM — Episode 6 — 02/11/09

by Jonathan Downin in Games1094 days ago

A lot of people seem to have a problem with Arthur.  You can see this for yourself on the post for last week’s episode on the eat. sleep. game. website.  People are claiming that it is not due to him not being from 1UP, but because of his abrasive attitude.  Looking back, when Luke Smith started on 1UP Yours there was not this kind of backlash, and his style was similar, so it seems that both of these things are playing a role.  He is more reserved this week so maybe that will help calm people down. With John Davison from What They Play...

Giant Bombcast 02-10-2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1095 days ago

If there are two things the Giant Bomb crew love, they are achievement points and Fable II.  I played plenty of Fable II, but these guys are on a whole other level.  Still have to go back and get those aggravating gargoyles. So many great games came out last year and hearing talk about Fallout 3 makes me want to go back to that game.  I finished the story mode, but there is so much more to do.  Unfortunately the PS3 version isn’t getting any DLC.  Maybe biting the bullet and re-buying it on PC wouldn’t be such a bad idea. Almost...

Command Prompt Podcast, Episode 34

by Jonathan Downin in Games1102 days ago

The PC guys are finally getting their chance to jump into Burnout Paradise.  It sounds like it is running pretty well and the PC crowd is getting access to all the console DLC from the outset. More talk of the closing of Ensemble Studios on this one.  In closing, some info about their unreleased products has come out and a Halo MMO was something that was in the cards at some point.  The world of Halo seems like it could lend itself really well to an MMO.  Would it be a more traditional MMORPG or would it be a first-person shooter take on the...

Xbox 360 Fancast 102 — The Lost Episode

by Jonathan Downin in Games1103 days ago

It has taken them a while, but it seems like the Joystiq Xbox guys have finally fixed most of the issues with their podcast feed.  The transition wasn’t exactly smooth, but the problem are being taken care of. As the release of Halo Wars approaches Ensemble Studios is no more.  We will see how well the game does, but one things is for sure, Ensemble Studios will be missed. X3F (that’s the Xbox 360 Fancast) is back once again with a brand new episode. Before we get into the festivities, an announcement: The iTunes feed is up and running...

Listen UP – 01/30/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1106 days ago

The rebirth of 1UP Yours has happened and the new show is called Listen UP.  I’m not sure I love the title, but I didn’t love 1UP Yours at first either.  This is still very much the 1UP Yours we’ve come to love, so that’s a good thing.  No logo yet though it seems. Quite a bit of Killzone 2 talk up front here.  The guys seem to like it, but not quite as much as the IGN guys did.  I predict B+ from the 1UP crew.  We’ll see on Monday when they are released from embargo to post their review. They have mixed it up...
