The HotSpot 07/21/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1032 days ago

If you are waiting to pick up your copy of Alan Wake this Winter for PC, you will be waiting longer than you thought.  Developer, Remedy, has recently commented that the PC version is not a priority and will not ship alongside the Xbox 360 version. It has been confirmed that the PSP will be receiving iPhone/iPod touch-style apps.  This could be an interesting additional feature for the PSP, but without any persistent online connection the applications are somewhat limited in their potential functionality. The “game pick-up lines” segment...

You can always count on the HotSpot to make Tuesdays just a little bit better.  The announcement of Command & Conquer 4 is causing too much excitement.  Red Alert 3 didn’t set the world on fire and that was just released less than a year ago, so unless C&C4 is pretty innovative it may not do too well. Microsoft’s Summer of Arcade initiative is covered here and the guys seem positive on this years releases.  Trials HD sounds like a very interesting game despite its clunky title.  Splosion Man also sounds like a ton of fun. ...

Michael Pachter has been on a tear recently with his predictions, but these are not going over too well.  His prediction of a Wii HD coming by early 2011 has the guys skeptical.  A transition to HD this soon seems like quite a jump for Nintendo’s usual iterative designs. The news that LucasArts will start releasing some of their classic titles over Steam has generated a lot of excited.  The absence of Day of the Tentacle and others have a few disappointed, but those should come in time. And now the news everyone has been waiting for: Asteroids...

Tranformers 2 gets utterly destroyed during the whole length of this podcast.  These guys not only hated the movie, they were actively insulted by it. One of the hallmarks of The HotSpot has always been news and they just seem to be getting better at it.  The crew takes this stuff seriously and it is a great differentiator from the common what-you’ve-been playing format. There is a lot of movie talk on this one with a producer of the Mortal Kombat film suing Midway and the Uncharted movie being scripted. Covered topics and games: Transformers...

Prototype and Ghostbusters have been covered a lot, but if you are interested in the HotSpot guys’ takes, they share some here. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is coming to the PSP.  The DS iteration was critically well received, but it did not sell too well at all.  Hopefully Rockstar can adapt it with sharper graphics and overcome any problems that having only 1 screen may cause. While it could be seen as “just empty words” as is intimated here, the CEO of Activision threatening to drop PS3 development without a price drop...

Podcasters’ Favorite Podcasts | Part 7 – The HotSpot

by Jonathan Downin in Features1065 days ago

The HotSpot has been a staple in the gaming podcast world for going on 4 years now.  As the years have passed, so have the regular hosts, but the thing that hasn’t changed is their commitment to delivering the news of the gaming world with some commentary and a lot of personality. We initially started Podcasters’ Favorite Podcasts to see what other podcasts in their field podcasters enjoyed the most, but if this feature has proven anything, it is that people have all kinds of tastes.  We have Brendan Sinclair, host of GameSpot’s...

First up this week is a lengthy discussion about Prototype.  After a largely mediocre initial critical reception it has really started to win some people over.  Justin and Kevin are having a lot of fun with the game and it even gets the nod as being better than Infamous by Justin. NPDs for May have come out and as good as Infamous is it just didn’t come through in the numbers.  It sold just over 175,000 units upon release which is not too good for a high profile PS3 game.  This has been a trend with almost all PS3 exclusives.  Look for...

There is not too much actual game talk on this one, and after so much E3 coverage, it is actually kind of nice. Activision has filed a lawsuit against EA and Double Fine claiming that they still hold the sole rights to publish Brutal Legend.  If this is the case it is pretty incredible that EA made this kind of colossal mistake especially considering how much marketing money they have put behind it. News has come out of Nintendo that at some point within the past 3 years they have scrapped plans to launch a completely new handheld which was fully...

We get a pretty low key edition for the last E3 episode of The HotSpot.  The guys are just sharing their thoughts on a few of the games that caught their attentions on the show floor. Covered topics and games: Left 4 Dead 2, Konami press conference, Scribblenauts, APB Giddy from lack of sleep and abundance of gaming goodness, Tom Magrino, Tom Mc Shea, Shaun McInnis, and Brendan Sinclair close out the HotSpot’s E3 2009 coverage with a micro-cast recap of what was learned, seen, and played on the show floor. Highlights include Castlevania:...

There are a ton of announcements and games touched upon here, but nothing gets too much time.  That is not to say the guys are skimp on the information, they just seem to do very well about being concise.  There is a full list of games and topics below which we will be including in each post from here on out. Near the end the group discusses who they think had the best briefing and the consensus is Microsoft by a small margin.  Sony also get some high praise for all the great games and motion controller stuff they showed. Covered topics and games:...

As with the 1UP guys, the crew here is pretty positive on Microsoft and the announcements they had at their press conference earlier today.  It sounds like although everyone is very positive on Project Natal, the Milo presentation from Lionhead is creeping a few people out.  It is understandable, but it seems more a promise of potential than people are realizing. The EA and Ubisoft announcements get some time, but there is not too much in-depth discussion going on.  Tune in to hear another take on today’s announcements. Tor Thorsen, Tom...

GameSpot gave Infamous a 9.0 last week and the group takes the first 30 minutes talking about it this week.  One aspect of the conversation going on here that is a little different is that a few of the guys are not completely positive on the game.  A lot of the problems aired here are smaller ones, but they add up.  It’s an interesting listen if you’ve been hearing nothing but positive things about the game. The somewhat negative takes on things continues with the discussion on the topic of the almost universally loved Trico trailer. ...

Right at the beginning here we get some hands-on impressions of Terminator: Salvation and Bionic Commando. It doesn”t sound like either if them deliver on too many fronts.  Terminator especially seems to be particularly forgettable with Bionic Commando having some redeeming values. There are some E3 predictions here including an Xbox 360 port of Metal Gear Solid 4, subtitled Oxide.  Also discussed is the potential of a price drop or redesign for the PS3.  PlayStation Home gets some talk time as well, but nobody has anything nice to say...

Josh Olin, Call of Duty community manager for Treyarch is on this week and while he dips into some PR speak quite a bit, he is still an interesting addition to the mix.  He talks about the state of World at War, controversies surrounding it and a upcoming map pack. The guys touch on the recently leaked Beyond Good & Evil 2 footage that has yet to be confirmed as official.  If you haven’t seen it yet, it is a must-watch.  We have embedded it after the break so click on through to get excited. Thief 4 has been confirmed to be in development. ...

Everyone is getting there word in on the UMD-less PSP Go! rumor.  The HotSpot crew Has Telltale co-founder Kevin Bruner on this week and he has a unique perspective on it.  It is no surprise as a head of company who does a lot of downloadable titles, he is very interested in this.  The only people that really lose out at the prospect of this is retailers, which could be worked around to some extent with game vouchers being offered in place of physical UMDs. The Bioshock movie is on hold and everyone seems to have mixed feeling about it.  Apparently...
