The HotSpot 11/24/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games806 days ago

Okay, mentally prepare yourself for this news– Tony Hawk Ride is terrible. That’s right, Kevin has been playing the game and he pulls no punches here, or in his review. Sophia is full of energy this week and shares her love for Modern Warfare and talks about shooters in general. It was a busy week of news with EA leading the headlines with their announcement of substantial layoffs. The Saboteur developer was hit the hardest with an almost complete shuttering of the studio, but the EA will not be retiring the Pandemic name. Sony is making...

Relative to other big releases over the past weeks, Assassin’s Creed II has been flying under the radar to some extent. A level of trepidation after the critical reception of the first game is understandable, but the latest entry has wowed Kevin, and he is not the only one. Left 4 Dead 2 has garnered an equally positive reception and Shaun shares his opinion after weeks of playtime. Tony Hawk Ride is still MIA due to Activisions decision not to send out review copies– not a good sign. Moving onto the news, EA is cutting 1500 jobs and...

If you are looking for Modern Warfare 2 discussion, you will have to wait. Since there is a lot to cover on MW2, the GameSpot guys are going to be releasing a special, spoiler-filled podcast completely dedicated to the game on Thursday. Since Lark got his hands on an import copy, Bayonetta is up first this week. He doesn’t provide too much insight outside of what is already known, but there are a few minor details. Some of the guys have seen the Prince of Persia trailer and this leads into a discussion about Jake Gyllenhaal and other game/comic-related...

Kevin starts this one out with the 1st of 4 games that get glowing impressions this week, Dragon Age Origins, which he scored a 9.5/10. He says that the narrative is great, and that if you give it 30 minutes, you will be hooked. Atypically, the Xbox 360 version loses out technically to the PS3 and PC versions. Justin says that The Ballad of Gay Tony is a great closer to GTAIV before Dead Space Extraction and Ratchet and Clank close out the love-fest. Things turn for the negative with Tekken 6 and the announcement of the DSi XL. As is the case with...

Borderlands is proving to be received in a much more positive light than many previously thought. We touched on it in this week’s CastMedium Podcast and may have been a little hasty in our dismissal of the game. Demon’s Souls continues to capture imagination with Brian talking about his strange attraction to the game. Justin got his hands on the PSP version of GTA: Chinatown Wars and it sounds like Rockstar has polished it up nicely. The tentatively forthcoming Sam Raimi directed Warcraft movie is still in the news. Justin voices his...

Uncharted 2 is up first this week and is still being praise, but Brutal Legend gets the most time at the beginning of this week’s HotSpot. This is a Tim Schafer game so the writing and story are entertaining the guys to a large extent as expected. The multiplayer also gets the thumbs up here though so it sounds like the game isn’t completely reliant on its narrative. It’s available today so do yourself a favor and pick it up. Guitar Hero Van Halen has started shipping out to those that pre-orded Guitar Hero 5 and it sounds like...

GameSpot hardware guy Sarju Shah is on this week to talk about the PSPgo and you can surmise what he has to say about it. His biggest complaint is the price of both the hardware and minis and has been the trend in opinion lately. Kevin is sharing his thoughts on Motorstorm Arctic Edge and Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 and both come away with positive remarks overall. He also talks about Demon’s Soul, and while it seems to have some innovative features that bring the player community together by incorporating player ghosts within the single-player game,...

It’s a stripped-down cast this week with many of the GameSpot guys over in Japan for the Tokyo Game Show. Halo ODST is covered at length at the beginning with more praise for the campaign and “Firefight” multiplayer mode.  Everyone agrees that although it is basically a straight lift of “horde mode” in Gear of War, the AI and Halo gameplay make it a much more enjoyable experience. The Beatles: Rock Band gets some middling opinions here before the recent comments from Activisions CEO spark a discussion about franchises...

As everyone, PAX stuff starts this one off, but GameSpot didn’t really attend the expo so not too much time is spent on it other than trends of the show.  GameSpot held a bracketed tournament that pitted many of the greatest game heroes against each other and then the winners were voted on by readers.  It’s a fun feature so go check out the results. Tomorrow is the 10 years anniversary of the Dreamcast so the HotSpot crew took the chance to talk about their memories of the system and generally talk about their favorite games.  In...

Starting out this weeks cast is a discussion about Kurt Cobain’s inclusions in Guitar Hero 5.  Music games have started to become formulaic, but you will be able to use your Xbox avatars in the new GH, which could be a cool novelty.  Batman also continues to get some talk time before moving onto other big comic news with Disney acquiring Marvel for $4 billion. God of War and God of War II are being remastered for release on PS3.  The new version will be in 720P HD and run at 60 frames per second.  You can get in on this beautified Kratos...

It’s  a down-tempo edition of the HotSpot with no Tom Mc Shea or Tom Magrino this week.  First up is Batman Arkham Asylum which has proven to be a hit, with Justin Calvert giving it a 9.0 on GameSpot.  The fighting mechanics are simplistic, but still manage to be fun and the stealth seems to have been done right.  Wolfenstein doesn’t fare nearly as well. The HotSpot may be last podcast to be touching on the big announcements from Gamescom since their last episode was recorded just before Sony’s conference took place.  The...

The HotSpot didn’t hold back the recording this week so don’t expect any PS3 Slim or Gamescom talk here. The hot game of the week is not doubt Shadow Complex with its release just hours away.  You have probably heard all you need to on this game, but if you want the GameSpot crew take, you can get it here.  Trials HD also gets some much-deserved love. Brian Ekberg, the resident sports guy, is on again this week and he talks a bit about EA’s new strategy with it’s microtransction fueled sports game push.  This sounds like...

Madden 10 is getting some good press with it’s latest iteration, Madden 10.  It sounds like the game has made progress in almost all areas and is the biggest leap in quality in years.  If you really care about Madden, you were probably going to get it anyway though. Blizzard has stated that the main reason for the StarCraft 2 delay is their Battle.net service.  It is rumored that with the release of StarCraft 2, Battle.net will be completely relaunched as not only a matchmaking service, but as an online service similar to Valve’s...

The guys are having a lot of fun with Fat Princess.  It sounds like there are some problems with with the online play, which is the whole crux of the game, so you may be better off waiting for these issues to be cleared-up before getting it though. There are a lot of game movies on the slate for the next few years.  The most potentially interesting of which is a Sims movie.  This is one that could really be anything.  The guys pontificate on a Sims movie completely in Simlish.  Although it would never happen, this would be incredible, even...

Comic-Con news has become unavoidable.  This happens every time a convention or trade show comes around so it’s probably not too surprising. Ubisoft had their financial briefing for the year and there are a lot of big titles that we won’t being seeing until next year, including Splinter Cell Conviction, Red Steel 2 and the new Ghost Recon.  The most painful delay for most is no doubt Splinter Cell.  After its lauded E3 reveal it shot to the top of peoples’ most anticpated lists, but the wait will be even longer with it now slated...
