Podcast Beyond: Veronica Belmont Strikes

by Jon Cole in Games447 days ago

Veronica Belmont of Qore fame joins this week’s conversational podcast, which starts off with the Roper Report. The mystical unicorn Gran Turismo 5 finally got a release date and it happens to be next week (unless of course it gets delayed again). Homefront’s release date sparks a bit of conversation considering the fact that Colin has an affinity for the alternate history nature of the story. After a bunch of game announcements and new release date notices, Greg and Colin get a little bit of redemption by learning that the rumored LittleBigPlanet...

ATB XXIV: The State of Western RPGs | 10/21/2010

by Ross Adams in Games476 days ago

Mike Nelson joins Kat for the first part of this weeks ATB to talk Fallout: New Vegas which he is reviewing for 1UP. Kat starts off by comparing the game to The Dark Tower series by Stephen King, a comparison that is apparently warranted as there are references to the books in the game. She and Mike agree that there’s a bit of a Western vibe from the game although Mike wonders if it’s just because you’re a lone desert wanderer. Mike is actually playing two characters at the same time, one on PS3 and the other on PC, and if that...

Mobcast

Mobcast Episode 47

by Jon Cole in Games682 days ago

The Mobcast for this week marks yet another podcast in David Ellis’s final crusade before diving deep into the dark side at 343 Industries.  First up is Shoe’s topic, asking what life after games journalism might be like, which is particularly interesting given the diverse paths each of the guys took to get into the industry. Very few developers have found widespread success with multiplayer, with much of the attention focused on games like Call of Duty and Halo.  Most of the guys agree that most of this failure can be attributed to...

Pixel Revolt: Episode 17

by Derek Lavigne in Games731 days ago

(note: Pixel Revolt is hosted by CastMedium writer Derek Lavigne for Bitmob.com and is not in any way affiliated with CM) Pixel Revolt is Bitmob’s community-driven podcast, in which Derek Lavigne, Jeff Grubb, Brett Bates, and a special guest dive into the Mobfeed to discuss interesting posts written by Bitmob members. For the second half of the show, they throw a question out to the community so that you can have your voice heard. If you’d like to contribute your opinion to the show, follow the upload instructions on Bitmob. Pixel Revolt...

Mobcast Episode 37

by Jon Cole in Games751 days ago

Shoe is back from the dead to relieve Aaron Thomas for a week, joined by mostly Bitmob staff and his girlfriend, Raychul Moore.  The topics for this week tread some very familiar ground, but it’s nice to get a short reprieve from the guest-heavy episodes for a more traditional Mobcast. The first and likely most interesting topic asks what video game series need to take a break.  One of the most ubiquitous answers is the Legend of Zelda franchise, for a handful of reasons.  Jason Wilson offers that the sense of exploration and adventure...

Idle Thumbs PAX 09: BioWare’s Mac Walters

by Jon Cole in Games885 days ago

The Idle Thumbs crew brings their PAX coverage to a close with a concise interview with BioWare’s Mac Walters.  After being a lowly member of the original Mass Effect writing team, Mac decided to climb the company ladder by murdering Mass Effect’s lead writer Drew Karpyshyn, so he naturally has a unique view from seeing both the formative and evolving stages of the Mass Effect trilogy.  Bioware is well known for their proficiency in telling stories and Mass Effect is no exception to the rule.  The series’s development of voice-over...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 142

by Jonathan Downin in Games954 days ago

The guys have a special interview this week with the developers of Dungeons & Dragons Online which has moved to a free-to-play model.  It sounds like there are a lot of cool changes in store and it is pretty exciting to see MMOs move in this direction.  Hopefully some traditional subscription based games will stick around so that we still have a choice though. The Bethesda/id Software and Bioware/Mythic acquisitions are in the spotlight here with the crew adding their 2 cents to the discussion.  Again, things are pretty positive all around. This...

Command Prompt Podcast, Episode 50

by Jonathan Downin in Games955 days ago

Acquisition talks ensue.  Though we have heard a lot on this topic, these guys are very familiar with these companies since most of them come from the PC side of things.  The guys make a great point about the EA consolidation.  They say Mythic has a lot to add to Star Wars: The Old Republic with their experience in big PvP combat with their previous MMO experience.  With the Jedi vs. Sith angle of the game, this could be very exciting. Jeff had a chance to play some Starcraft 2, but he doesn’t have too many new details to dole out.  If...

Giant Bombcast 06-30-2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games955 days ago

Another lengthy edition of the the Bombcast.  1 vs. 100 continues to grab attention.  It sounds like a great casual quiz game experience and being free is the thing that really makes it. The Conduit has not gone over too well at the Giant Bomb offices.  Check out Jeff’s review for all the details. There is some very serious and lengthy discussion about the acquisitions that have taken place over the past few weeks.  There is a lot of these going on, but weirdly enough, it sounds like it is to the benefit to almost all involved. The topic...

The HotSpot 06/30/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games955 days ago

Tranformers 2 gets utterly destroyed during the whole length of this podcast.  These guys not only hated the movie, they were actively insulted by it. One of the hallmarks of The HotSpot has always been news and they just seem to be getting better at it.  The crew takes this stuff seriously and it is a great differentiator from the common what-you’ve-been playing format. There is a lot of movie talk on this one with a producer of the Mortal Kombat film suing Midway and the Uncharted movie being scripted. Covered topics and games: Transformers...

Joystiq Podcast 99.75 – Lettuce smokers edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games959 days ago

The guys have procured a soundboard, and in typical Joystiq fashion they have taken something that is completely played out and made it funny again.  There is one exception, Kindergarten Cop sound bytes, not yet funny again.  Give it a couple more years. A lot of talk about the mergers and acquisitions going on in the game industry lately.  Chris, with his undying love for id, interviewed John Carmack about the Zenimax deal and there are some interesting tidbits in there so go check it out. Rounding out the show is the guys talking about a Q&A...

Three Red Lights Podcast, Ep. 117

by Jonathan Downin in Games961 days ago

There is a lot of merger and acquisitions news this week.  Bethesda’s parent company, Zenimax Media, has  acquired id Software.  It’s a somewhat strange pair, but Zemimax says that they will allow id complete feedom.  Mythic has merged with BioWare with the doctors at the head of the studios.  Mythic is famouse for their MMOs so it would be safe to assume they will be helping with Star Wars: The Old republic. Hilary had a chance to see Transformers 2 and he doesn’t have too many nice things to say about.  This, of course,...

Command Prompt Podcast, Episode 49

by Jonathan Downin in Games968 days ago

Jeff was out searching for a copy of the Sims 3 over the weekend and it sounds like it is sold out all over.  We were able to procure a copy at a Best Buy, but there were only a few left out of what looked like 100s.  It is a whole lot of fun, so don’t let the stigma of franchise put you off. Jason and Jeff are talking about Star Wars: The Old Republic and it makes us want to see some game footage.  If only Bioware would put out a 30 minute walk-through of a mission. The guys also have a few things to say about Left 4 Dead 2 and what they...

Three Red Lights, Episode 105

by Jonathan Downin in Games1094 days ago

The fact that Valve got Microsoft to let them release free DLC for Left 4 Dead is really great.  Microsoft has traditionally been very against this, but hopefully they are learning to let developers make the call. The talk of Mass Effect reminds me of how great that game is.  Sure, there were some small problems and it was a bit glitchy at times, but these are things that are likely to be fixed in a sequel.  Hopefully we see a bit more polish on the graphics now that it is almost 2 years later though. Discussing story in relation to Gears of...
