CO-OP – Episode 311: 10,000 Deaths by 1,000,000 Bullets

by Jonathan Downin in Games774 days ago

There are no new releases to be had until the new year begins, so the CO-OP guys take the opportunity to do a more topic-focused show this week. The topic centers around first person shooters and what keeps them coming back to certain titles in the genre. The usual suspects are represented here with Modern Warfare and Halo receiving a lot of nods, but the group does get into some of the finer points about different approaches developers take, and the importance of community. Valve gets a lot of appreciation here for how they have handles Team Fortress...

Game Scoop! Podcast, Episode 131

by Jonathan Downin in Games910 days ago

When there aren’t any scoops during the week, there isn’t much for GameScoop! to add to existing coverage, but Greg Miller’s Knockin’ Boots segment covers infidelity and threesomes, and Hilary Goldstein keeps the show rolling. The crew hits on most of the big new from the week, including GRIN studio’s closure, and the Xbox 360 dashboard update.  Hilary is still disappointed with the pricing, having confirmed that most of the Games on Demand are the same price or more expensive than retail prices. Nielsen Research has released data that...

Idle Thumbs 38: Up On This Boss

by Jonathan Downin in Games912 days ago

Today we are adding Idle Thumbs to the list of covered podcasts.  This podcast is made up of long-time industry people from both the development and journalism sides of games.  The group is well versed in game design and have opinions a-plenty.  It’s not all hard-hitting discussion though, these guys are genuinely funny, even if you are new to the podcast. A Nintendo patent was recently uncovered that refers to an “inflatable air cushion” with a remote pocket that is said to be used to simulate animal riding.  It is lovingly...

Joystiq Podcast 102 – Vystal edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games931 days ago

The Joystiq crew continues doing the show live.  If you want to catch it live and join in on the discussion, the recording usually takes place at around 9:30am EST on uStream. Ludwig’s love of Monkey Island is in full affect here.  Is it just the people who loved the original that are loving this re-release and new episodic TellTale entry?  It’s hard to tell, but those that have no connection to the original certainly don’t seem to be as taken by the recent releases. There is a World of Warcraft movie in pre-production with...

Joystiq Podcast 099 – Post-E3 edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games973 days ago

E3 episode wrap-up has arrived.  Joystiq had a lo of great coverage of E3 this year and they are talking about their thoughts here including who they thought had the best showing.  Spoiler:  the company starts with an M. There is some notable news this week.  The whole Activision suing EA/Double Fine is still pretty crazy.  Also, Max Payne 3 looks to be an even more cynical take on the character, if that’s even possible.  Ready for some bald, dual pistol wielding slow-mo action?  If so, you are in for a treat. The guys are talking about...

Rebel FM Episode 20 – 052709

by Jonathan Downin in Games988 days ago

Infamous has swept the gaming press after being highly praised things have started to turn a little bit more negative.  First the HotSpot guys had some nitpicks and now the Rebel FM guys get their thoughts out there.  It sounds like the graphics aren’t quite up to the standard we have come to expect from big releases, but it still sounds like people are liking it over all. Bionic Commando get some time and the guys like it quite a bit in general, but that love does not transfer over to GRIN’s other recent release Terminator Salvation. ...

The Totally Rad Show | Episode 114 – Umlaut

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Movies990 days ago

This week’s show is a childhood destroyer.  Ok, that may be a little extreme, but the guys are not loving Terminator Salvation.  It doesn’t seem to capture what made the first 2 films so amazing and even seems to falter with action’s recent golden boy, Christian Bale.  The upside is– the action is okay. Bionic Commando is back with the new remake coming from Capcom.  The swinging mechanic is something to master, not something to just go crazy with and this makes Dan love it and Jeff and Alex sort of not like it.  Dan...

Rebel FM Episode 19 – 05/21/09

by Jonathan Downin in Games995 days ago

More Bionic Commando and Terminator Salvation talk.  There isn’t much more that can be said about these games.  You’ve heard about them; you know they aren’t that good; buy at your own risk. Anthony had a chance to see Red Dead Redemption first hand and he shares some of his impressions here.  It sounds like there are some pretty amazing things going on with how Rockstar is rendering and dealing with the artificial intelligence of the wildlife in the game.  All you have to do is take a look at the horses in the trailer and...

Three Red Lights Podcast, Episode 114

by Jonathan Downin in Games996 days ago

With Daemon Hatfield sitting in this week we get a very atypical Three Red Lights that actually contains comprehendable game discussion. Hilary has a few things to say about Bionic Commando and has more bad than good things to say about it.  Although IGN gave it a 8.0, he says that he would personally probably rate it a 7.0. In talking about E3 the guys discuss Alan Wake and Mass Effect 2.  They mention that all previews and screens of Alan Wake that have come out recently have been said to be old, so everything we see at E3 should be pretty fresh. ...

Giant Bombcast 05-19-2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games997 days ago

There are tons of games talked about on this one so here a big, fat list: Ultimate Fighting Championship, Bionic Commando, InFamous, Brutal Legend, Vattlefield 1943, Fable II, Fallout 3, Patapon 2, Ghostbusters, Punch Out!, Tony Hawk RIDE, new Kojima project and a few others. InFamous sounds like it really is going to be an amazing game.  Brad has played through it and he just teases his review which will be up very soon.  One thing that can be gleaned about his opinion is that the game is fun in a CrackDown sort of way. Over at Giantbomb.com...

The HotSpot 05/19/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games997 days ago

Right at the beginning here we get some hands-on impressions of Terminator: Salvation and Bionic Commando. It doesn”t sound like either if them deliver on too many fronts.  Terminator especially seems to be particularly forgettable with Bionic Commando having some redeeming values. There are some E3 predictions here including an Xbox 360 port of Metal Gear Solid 4, subtitled Oxide.  Also discussed is the potential of a price drop or redesign for the PS3.  PlayStation Home gets some talk time as well, but nobody has anything nice to say...

CO-OP | Episode 111 – Drop and Give me E3

by Jonathan Downin in Games998 days ago

First up this week Plants Vs. Zombies gets some discussion with the Brodeo master himself, Jeff Green, stopping by to share his love for the game.  It has been said by many recently, but Jeff is right in saying that from now on if PopCap announces a new game, everyone should pay attention. Sway is the iPhone game of the week so if that is your thing and have a few dollars to spare go check this one out. Where did Zeno Clash come from?  This game had next to no hype which is probably due to it being an indie game, but it looks incredible.  How...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 134

by Jonathan Downin in Games1011 days ago

Free Realms has just gone live, and if you are not aware, it is a free to play MMO from Sony.  As is becoming more and more popular it is based on the model that you can play all you want for free, but if you want certain game items and various other things you have to pay for them.  This is one of the biggest releases yet to try this model and according to the GWJ crew it is surprisingly good. The big segment this week is a sit down talk with Jerry “Tycho” Holkins of Penny Arcade.  Cory had a chance to grab Tycho for a while and...

Listen UP: 04/27/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1022 days ago

The guys are hitting a lot games on this one.  Sterling McGarvey, of GameSpy and GameSpy Debriefings podcast, is a great guest with a lot of input.  He brings a lot of energy to the show and is a good counterpart to David.  The problem is Patrick Klepek doesn’t have much to say about many of the games discussed this week. Bionic Commando sounds like it may not live up to the hopes that many have for it.  Although the guys aren’t going into too much detail since the review is still a few weeks away, it’s pretty obvious how they...

Xbox 360 Fancast 113 – General Podcast Failure

by Jonathan Downin in Games1026 days ago

No Xav again this week.  That guy needs to learn to prioritize.  Who needs higher education anyway– The Joystiq Xbox crew had a Halo 3 tournament with Bungie and apparently Bungie was not playing fair.  They rigged the maps so that in capture the flag, both maps were right next to each other within Bungie’s base.  It sounds like Dustin is not too happy and is planning his revenge at this very moment (depending on when you are reading this it may not be this very moment). As has been heavily covered the E74 error has been included...
