This is Only a Test – Episode 51 – Meet the Controversacast – 2/3/2011

by Alex Martin in Tech370 days ago

This week, Gary appears as his alter-ego, Ana, so they can pump out an information-packed podcast. They start with Google’s Honeycomb event, where Google detailed the forthcoming version of their Android operating-system, optimized for tablets. Intel recalled their Sandy Bridge motherboards, which would have caused errors in SATA drives over time. Will’s happy that they acknowledged and fixed the error quickly. Twitter followers of Google and Microsoft employees have been party to some petty squabbling this week. Norm explains exactly...

Engadget Podcast 212 – 09.11.2010

by Jon Cole in Tech515 days ago

Josh, Paul, and Nilay start off this week’s podcast with the somewhat morbid state of Nokia. Stephen Elop of Microsoft’s Business Division usurped OPK as the Finnish company’s CEO, which doesn’t inspire much optimism given the fact that Nokia needs more of a Steve Jobs than a Steve Ballmer. In other depressing mobile news, the guys talk a little bit about the bastardization of Android OS on various recent handsets, most specifically the Samsung Fascinate. For some reason, Verizon decided to force Bing search as the default...

TWiT 256: The Shirtless Page Turn

by Jon Cole in Tech576 days ago

As is standard practice for TWiT at this point, Apple talk starts things off, talking about some of the experiences the guys had with the iPhone 4.  The high pixel density “retina display” clearly impressed Dwight, who goes as far as to say that the iPad feels old in comparison even for the sake of reading text.  Conversation then turns to the iPad, which revolves around the issue that Microsoft has patented the page turn feature employed in iBooks.  Leo oddly holds some vendetta against the feature, while Josh admires the sense of...

TWiT 252: The Legend of Vuvuzela

by Jon Cole in Games, Tech604 days ago

As per usual, Apple talk capitalizes the beginning of the show and Brian hits on the biggest theme of the iPhone 4′s announcement – getting less than you expected.  He goes on to say that Jobs is the P.T. Barnum of the modern day, selling old tech like video phone calls like they’d never been seen before. Wrapping up the Apple talk, John theorizes that the lack of a partnership with Verizon may be temporary, as they booked a conference room three days after the initial release of the phone. Hulu has been rumored to be offering some...

Windows Weekly 130: Trapped, Like Carrots

by Jon Cole in Tech817 days ago

Modern Warfare 2 has seemingly infected all media this week, dominating the first half hour of Windows Weekly.  The Call of Duty franchise leads to the topic of PC game distribution and Leo and Paul agree that Steam and Good Old Games take the cake. Paul discusses Windows 7 on netbooks, deciding that productivity is still difficult on the small screen though he thinks they’re capable of light computing and/or watching ripped movies.  Leo shares his experiences with Windows Mobile 6.5 and Paul tries to reveal some of the features of the OS that...

Diggnation | Episode 215 – What Happens in Vegas, Stays On Diggnation…with Ashton Kutcher

by Jonathan Downin in Misc, Tech913 days ago

First story up this week is about a bikini that is being pitched as a good post-breakup revenge tool because it disintegrates seconds after hitting water.  This sounds all well and good, but how is this plausibly going to work?  You either have to anticipate the bad breakup and gift it before or somehow gift it after the bad breakup.  This is not going to happen either way. The biggest real tech news of this episode has the guys discussing Yahoo and its partnership with Microsoft to drop their own search technology and transplant it with Bing. ...

TWiT 206: Mold Happens

by Jonathan Downin in Tech921 days ago

Yahoo has relented and has given up on the search market.  All searches from Yahoo will now be served by Microsoft’s Bing.  This solidifies Bing as the #2 search engine in the world, with no real 2nd place player in the market.  Jason equates this to Yahoo committing seppuku. Apple is starting to garner a lot of ill-will from the tech press with their recent draconian business methods.  Jason, in particular, is pretty upset and thinks Apple is one of the least consumer-oriented companies out there.  This ties in nicely with the discussion...

TWiT 202: The Overeating iPhone

by Jonathan Downin in Tech949 days ago

With Leo out of the country in China, Dvorak gets hosting duties this week.  He does a great job at keeping the group lively.  Dvorak really is the only person on the level of Leo who can pull this off this well. The topics are a bit all-over on this one, but the CrunchPad gets some time right of the top.  This is a device that many would love to get their hands on and if the form-factor and engineering is up to snuff, it may just be a stealth hit. Bing is also catching some people off guard.  If you asked anyone in tech 6 months ago if Microsoft...

Diggnation | Episode 208 – Bing, Bang, Boom… And a zap.

by Jonathan Downin in Tech961 days ago

Kids these days.  More stories about high schoolers changing up the whole system for those of us that were born in the early 1900s. Microsoft’s Bing has proven to be a quite capable search engine.  This may just be the first Google competitor that we have seen.  The chance of a mass exodus to Bing is unthinkable, but if it proves to be consistently better, Google may have to make some changes.  Remember, competition is always good for innovation. More relationship advice in this one.  Kevin always has good advice, but it’s a little...

TWiT 198: Emission Accomplished

by Jonathan Downin in Tech978 days ago

A lot fo talk about the Palm Pre up front and it is not ll universal love.  Leo makes a good point that if the iPhone didn’t exist people would be losing their minds over this phone.  It definitely true, but unfortunately for Palm, the iPhone is around. WWDC is mere hours away at this point and predictions are all of the map.  One thing no one would be surprised to see announced is a new iPhone though.  The rumor mill has been steady on this and it looks like a new, slightly updated iPhone is inevitable.  There is not too much hope for...
