CO-OP – Episode 311: 10,000 Deaths by 1,000,000 Bullets

by Jonathan Downin in Games774 days ago

There are no new releases to be had until the new year begins, so the CO-OP guys take the opportunity to do a more topic-focused show this week. The topic centers around first person shooters and what keeps them coming back to certain titles in the genre. The usual suspects are represented here with Modern Warfare and Halo receiving a lot of nods, but the group does get into some of the finer points about different approaches developers take, and the importance of community. Valve gets a lot of appreciation here for how they have handles Team Fortress...

Xbox 360 Fancast 129 — Boing Boing Ratta Tatta

by Jonathan Downin in Games914 days ago

As the guys mention right up front, it seems like it is almost impossible for all 4 guys to be on at the same time these days.  Richard is attempting to build his own joystick for fighters so no one can ever say he is not a real gamer/geek. There have been images circulating around the internet showing an Xbox 360 Arcade box that is missing the Xbox 360 Pro listing and only shows the Arcade and Elite versions.  This has led to speculation that Microsoft may be trimming the lineup to just these 2 packages.  This would make a good counter to Sony’s...

Out of the Game, Ep. 10

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc919 days ago

No Robert or Luke this week, but Jeff, N’Gai and Shawn are here and they are touching on a whole myriad of topics.  Almost all of the topics this week are centered around movies, and the Alien sequel with Ridley Scott returning to direct, has the group somewhat interested, but not convinced about its potential quality. The discussion moves from sequels to remakes and back throughout the discussion.  Games come up here as well, but the talk is spawned by news that Toy Story 3 is on the way.  N’Gai has a good insight in Pixar when he...

CO-OP | Episode 206 – The City Always Wins

by KirePDX in Games928 days ago

CO-OP is only covering two games this week; and they assemble a full party to swap war stories about Battlefield 1943, and then sit a few guys down to talk about Wii Sports Resort. While Battlefield 1943 has had problems with matchmaking and its servers, everyone is having a lot of fun with this XBLA shooter with a focus on their fun experiences. Veteran Battlefield players will be familiar with the game style, but some of the newcomers to the series are discovering the charms of the game’s classes, vehicles and WWII setting. BitMob’s...

Game Scoop! Podcast, Episode 128

by KirePDX in Games931 days ago

No Greg Miller or Knockin’ Boots this week, but the rest of the guys are going over news from Comic-Con and downloadable games. Wii Sports Resort is the biggest game release this week and Craig finds it to be a good follow-up to Wii Sports and a worthy purchase since it includes Wii MotionPlus.   Damon goes over recent sales on XBLA noting that Battlefield 1943 set sales records for Xbox Live and PSN downloads with more than 600k total downloads. From Comic-Con, the guys discuss some Halo announcements, but there’s no new game information....

Wii Sports Resort get a good chunk of time near the beginning here and it sounds like a home-run.  John puts it well when he says that Nintendo are the masters of making peripherals that ship with software that makes it really hard not to buy them.  Will this give the Wii its 2nd wind after the recent decline in sales? The World of Warcraft movie has “hit” written all over it.  Sam Raimi, like him or not, has proven he can make good/marketable movies.  Once you add Legendary Pictures and WoW’s 15 million current players into...

Giant Bombcast 07-21-2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games934 days ago

The guys threw a Giant Bomb shindig including fighting games and many adult beverages last Friday and they have more than a few things to share about the night.  It is always cool to see sites like this holding community events, hopefully they do more of these. The Modern Warfare 2 Prestige Edition will include night-vision goggles, and from the sound of things, Jeff and Vinny have more than a few ideas about what to do with them.  The Giant Bombcast always brings the laughs, but Jeff’s emphatic explanation of why he needs the goggles is...

Wii Sports Resort is proving to be more than just a simple Nintendo cash-in.  The game seems to offer a whole lot of fun that takes advantage of Wii MotionPlus well.  Don’t make the mistake of going into it thinking you will get a sports experience of a game that was dedicated to a specific sport and there is a lot of fun to be had. NPDs are the big news this week and the numbers are not too good compared to last year.  The games industry is down overall and looks to stay that way for the coming months.  Prototype did much better than...

Joystiq Podcast 101 – Time Gentlemen, Please! edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games938 days ago

The Joystiq boys started “doing it live” with episode 100 and it seems to be the standard from here on out.  This adds a great dynamic to the podcast.  You can join in on the the festivities every Friday morning by joining in their chat room during the live stream. Being the head of a big gaming website, Chris should be experiencing games the way they were meant to be played and now that he got an HDTV, he finally is.  Take it from him, experiencing games on a big TV really is quite different from playing them on a small monitor,...

Giant Bombcast 07-14-2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games941 days ago

Over last weekend the guys made there way out to California Extreme.  This is one of the biggest annual “arcade game and pinball celebration” events around.  It sounds like the guys had a good time playing some classic games.  You’ll have to wait until next year if you missed it, but it sounds well-worth the admission price. Ryan and Vinny are doing a multi-part look at The Matrix Online.  It has been 4+ years since its release, and boy does it show.  This was probably never an amazing game and now it pretty abysmal, but that...

The HotSpot 07/14/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games941 days ago

You can always count on the HotSpot to make Tuesdays just a little bit better.  The announcement of Command & Conquer 4 is causing too much excitement.  Red Alert 3 didn’t set the world on fire and that was just released less than a year ago, so unless C&C4 is pretty innovative it may not do too well. Microsoft’s Summer of Arcade initiative is covered here and the guys seem positive on this years releases.  Trials HD sounds like a very interesting game despite its clunky title.  Splosion Man also sounds like a ton of fun. ...

Xbox 360 Fancast 125 — Domo Arigato

by Jonathan Downin in Games942 days ago

For a Xbox Live Arcade release, Battlefield 1943 has dominated game podcasts since its release.  Maybe the issues it had actually plays out well for the game in the long run since it is getting so much coverage. We’re are in the doldrums of summer and the releases are few and far in-between.  The Summer of Arcade is a good initiative by Microsoft to combat the slow release schedule even if only a couple of the games are going to be really good.  As the guys point out, it is weird that The Secret Of Monkey Island: Special Edition isn’t...

Good Grief: 07/13/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games942 days ago

Video games going digital is a topic that is very popular recently.  The Good Grief crew chimes in with their opinion on the subject at the beginning. It’s a fighting game extravaganza in the middle section here with Richard talking a lot about Street Fighter and a few other fighting games.  Tina is sitting in and takes the role of most of us in not knowing much about this classic genre.  Even with fighting games making a resurgence recently, it still seems to be a dying breed. Battlefield Heroes has the crew full of stories at the end. ...

Major Nelson Radio – Show #325: NCAA, BF:1943, Madden, Babo:Invasion and gdgt.com

by Jonathan Downin in Games943 days ago

The Major has an interview with Gordan van Dyke  on talking about Battlefield: 1943 and the recent load issues plaguing the online play.  They are apparently throwing loads of servers at the problem so hopefully it will actually be playable sometime soon. The NCAA and Madden interviews are fairly by-the-book.  There is too much new information here, but if you like those franchising, you are probably  going to buy these anyway. Ryan Block shows up for the last interview and the Major sounds to be really enjoying the new gdgt.com.  Ryan talks...

Game Scoop! Podcast, Episode 126

by Jonathan Downin in Games945 days ago

We get another Game Scoop this week, but there is no Greg Miller!  How can we get by without the classic Greg Miller enthusiasm and the Knockin’ Boots segment? This week we do get introduced to one of the newest members of the IGN team, news editor Jim Reilly.  It sounds like if you want to get a job at a big game news organization you should only sleep hours at a time in case game news happens to come out.  Hmm, sounds pretty familiar. It is obviously a slow time for news and releases so we get a lot of reader emails on this episode. Covered...
