Engadget Podcast 229 – 01.16.2011

by Jon Cole in Tech387 days ago

Nilay is out for this episode of the Engadget Podcast, so Automotive Editor Tim Stevens joins the show. The Verizon iPhone is easily the biggest piece of news, though it seems to fall a little flat after a huge buildup of hype. VZW’s insistence that their network can support the device and their offering of mobile hotspot functionality does seem to differentiate them from AT&T, but it remains to be seen if there’s a particularly good reason to switch immediately. Apple news continues with some insights into the iPad 2 and future...

Tekzilla 173 – Play Any Video Over DLNA, USB 3.0 Sucks?

by Jon Cole in Tech426 days ago

News opens up this episode of Tekzilla as always, starting up with Google’s new eBook store full of their huge catalog of titles right off the bat. Consumer Reports has also reported the results of one of their recent polls on mobile carriers, highlighting AT&T as the worst major service provider in the States. Viewer questions begin with some DLNA limitations in certain hardware. Unfortunately, DLNA is a communication standard and doesn’t really mandate supported file formats, so Robert recommends some transcoding software to help...

Engadget Podcast 219 – 11.13.2010

by Jon Cole in Tech452 days ago

The Engadget Podcast starts out with the biggest news to emerge from the rumor mill this week, namely the Google Nexus S. While the phone’s hardware isn’t particularly outstanding, it’s pretty clear that the idea of a carrier-agnostic, vanilla Android phone is intangibly appealing. Another upcoming flagship Android device was revealed this week – the Samsung Continuum. Samsung really broke out the AMOLED in style with their latest, adding a 1.8 inch “ticker” to the front of the device dedicated to notifications. Josh...

TWiT 258: It’s The New Sex Talk

by Jon Cole in Tech562 days ago

TWiT starts things off with the recent news of revenue and profit from Microsoft and Apple. While Microsoft still managed to keep ahead of Apple’s total revenue (which hit an all-time high), the guys talk about the strange juxtaposition of Microsoft’s financial success and perceived lack of relevance in the market. A big question in the law-related tech news world at the moment is FlipBoard and the legality of content scraping. There’s no question whether or not the way FlipBoard presents content is compelling, but the fact that...

TWiT 252: The Legend of Vuvuzela

by Jon Cole in Games, Tech604 days ago

As per usual, Apple talk capitalizes the beginning of the show and Brian hits on the biggest theme of the iPhone 4′s announcement – getting less than you expected.  He goes on to say that Jobs is the P.T. Barnum of the modern day, selling old tech like video phone calls like they’d never been seen before. Wrapping up the Apple talk, John theorizes that the lack of a partnership with Verizon may be temporary, as they booked a conference room three days after the initial release of the phone. Hulu has been rumored to be offering some...

This is Only a Test – Episode 15 – This Week in iNews

by Alex Martin in Tech609 days ago

Lots of iPhone news this week, but first Will and Norm introduce guest Matt Braga. Tested are hiring more news writers like Matt, and he gives a quick run down of the job. They’re also looking for an intern from the San Fransisco bay area. The trio give a quick recap of some of the week’s site features, the biggest of which was their host of home server videos — they built competing AMD- and Intel-based home servers and pitted them against each other. They don’t waste much time getting to iPhone 4 news. The wonder-device...

This is Only a Test – Episode 14 – A Day Late and a Dollar Short – 6/3/2010

by Alex Martin in Tech617 days ago

Norm has Tested the Asus G73J gaming “notebook”. The monolithic laptop’s innards are technically impressive but he experienced very poor battery life. Will, sipping a taurine-laced beverage, recounts his experiences with coffee-making equipment this week. They’re less down on Microsoft’s Kin phones than some, but admit they’re not for them — they discuss whether the social-networking devices are for tweens or eight-year-olds. Tablets feature heavily in the news segment, with Asus announcing their Ee Pad...

The Engadget Show – 009: Kevin Lynch, editor Q&A, AT&T GNOC tour, Sprint EVO 4G

by Jon Cole in Tech624 days ago

This month’s Engadget Show is a little bit less conventional than usual, starting things off with a prerecorded interview between Josh and Adobe CTO Kevin Lynch.  They hit on a lot of hot topics in the tech sphere, particularly pertaining to Flash 10.1 on mobile devices and Apple’s potshots at them.  The most interesting question asked what Kevin feels Adobe’s place is in the future of computing, which he initially flails around but ultimately says that Adobe will do whatever they can to stay relevant even in the unlikely scenario...

TWiT 239: Meat Up

by Jon Cole in Tech696 days ago

Leo Laporte was in Austin, Texas this past weekend attending SXSWi (South By Southwest Interactive) and brings a guest-packed show from a live panel he had at the event.  Since there are so many people on the show, several different panels were discussed as well as a ton of different news stories. Since SXSW is one of the biggest social media events of the year, it seems appropriate that social media topics dominate the first half of the show.  Dana Boyd’s keynote raised a lot of eyebrows when she suggested that privacy isn’t necessarily...

TWiT 231: Be Kind, Rewind

by Jon Cole in Tech751 days ago

One of the biggest pieces of news from the past week is Google’s assertion in China that could either break off all business between the two or give Google a lot more breathing room.  The commonly held belief is that Google did such a thing for mostly ethical reasons, falling back on their mantra – “don’t be evil.”  John has an interesting alternative take on the situation, noting that Google probably doesn’t want too much of their business tied into China’s overly-restrictive economic system. Continuing...

Engadget Podcast 176: CES 2010 Day 2 – 01.07.2010

by Jonathan Downin in Tech764 days ago

Another day of CES needs to be covered and the Engadget guys are at it again. The Microsoft Press Conference took place yesterday and it was a semi-awkward affair. Steve Ballmer took MC duties, and this really isn’t his forte. An underwhelming slate device was shown off and Project Natal took up some time. There were a lot of phone announcements including word the AT&T is getting into the Android game in a big way, including the Mini 3 handset from Dell. 2 unannounced WebOS devices are coming to AT&T as well which has Joshua duly excited....

Windows Weekly 133: A Fish Called Windows Audio Only

by Jon Cole in Tech796 days ago

Windows Weekly kicks off with some obligatory talk about Modern Warfare 2 and it seems that Paul is still addicted to the game.  Paul also got a chance to appear on last week’s TWiT, which leads into some conversation about the future of TWiT (definitely worth listening if you’re invested in the content on Leo’s network, starts at about the 9:00 mark). Apparently, web browsers are still stuck in the past and Microsoft isn’t too happy about it.  Security issues with Internet Explorer 6 are getting more and more overwhelming every day and...

Engadget Podcast 172 – 11.23.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech808 days ago

The reveal of Google’s Chrome OS has been the biggest thing to happen in the tech world in a long while. The guys are talking about Google’s approach of reducing the computer experience down to a browser. Paul is the most positive, as usual, but even he is not sold on an OS that is based around a model that caters to consumption, with very few concessions made for any substantial creation. He wrote an editorial and has a video walkthrough of the early open source Chromium release that gives a feel for what the OS will be like. AT&T...

gdgt weekly 064

by Jon Cole in Tech811 days ago

Ryan starts off Chrome OS talk by announcing that one of the gdgt’s engineers compiled the developer code preview, placed it into a VMware virtual machine, and made it available on their site.  Beyond that, Ryan is mostly unexcited about the OS considering its not much more than a browser.  In his characteristic optimism, Peter notes that this is Google really throwing its weight behind their own OS, which is exciting enough to begin with. Sony seems to be interested in making a digital distribution storefront similar to iTunes and both of the...

TWiT 220: Buffet Neutrality

by Jon Cole in Tech822 days ago

Unsurprisingly, this week’s TWiT starts with talk about the Verizon Droid.  Leo notices that a lot of his friends in the tech community seem to be interested, which says a lot for the phone.  Mark Milian talks about how the iPhone is often praised as a good pocket personal computer, but Verizon’s network undeniably guarantees that the Droid will be a good phone at square one. Comcast is now in the business of throttling bandwidth and Frank Barnako can’t help but protest.  Since throttling is effectively false advertisement, it negates...
