Rebel FM Episode 33 – 09/25/09

by Jonathan Downin in Games966 days ago

Halo ODST continues to be the first game covered in this week’s Rebel FM. Arthur ends up defending the game as Anthony argues that it doesn’t feel different enough and doesn’t offer enough content to justify its $60 price tag. Dead Space Extraction gets a glowing response from the guys here with them saying that it almost elevates the whole on-rails shooter genre. Tyler is talking about wanting to pick up Plants vs. Zombies, and the recent release of a stripped-down free flash version made it impossible for him to put it off any...

Rebel FM Episode 32 – 09/17/09

by Jonathan Downin in Games974 days ago

Robert Ashley is on this week and that is always a good thing.  WET impressions and reviews have been disparate, but there is no doubt which side the Rebel FM guys fall on the issue– they don’t like it.  Darkest of days fares even worse here, but for the definitive view on the game, Giant Bomb’s quick look can’t be beat. Scribblenauts has not proven to be the game that the press had hyped it up to be, but Robert seems to be on the right track when he calls for an iPhone release of the game.  Anthony attended the recent...

Rebel FM PAX Back to School Special!

by Jonathan Downin in Games983 days ago

The is the most game-focused PAX podcast yet with the guys going in-depth on a lot of games which they saw at the show.  The first half was recorded in the hotel room in Seattle , with the second part recorded in the car on their way back to San Francisco. Although there wasn’t to much in regards to announcements at PAX, there were a ton of games that everyone could get their hands on, queues permitting.  Left 4 Dead 2 seems to have shirked off its L4D 1.5 impression with the new environments and infected types bringing a lot to the game. ...

CO-OP | Episode 211 – 1994 Part 2

by Jonathan Downin in Games991 days ago

First up this week is Wolfenstein.  This has been a game that seems to have caught many by surprise.  There was very little hype leading up to its release, but it has turned out surprisingly solid.  Although it does look to take some of the better mechanics from other games, with its focus on shooting things pan out into an enjoyable, if not somewhat old-school, experience. Spider for the iPhone takes the second slot and it doesn’t have the guys as enamored as past iPhone games.  Everyone feels like the gameplay is a bit repetitive, but...

Rebel FM Episode 31 – 08/28/09

by Jon Cole in Games994 days ago

This week, Tina Sanchez joins the Rebel FM crew, opening the first segment with Dawn of War II.  In preparation for the upcoming DLC, she’s been spending a little bit of time trying to master some of the levels from this Games for Windows Live RTS.  Arthur notes that Dawn of War II shares many basic elements with a game like Diablo 2 and is a great for newbies to the genre. Arthur talks about Guitar Hero 5 briefly, noting its constantly updating interface and feature list to bring it closer to Rock Band.  He also admires drop-in multiplayer,...

Rebel FM Episode 30 – 08/20/09

by Jonathan Downin in Games1002 days ago

Starting out this week’s episode Tyler is talking about his ongoing love affair with Civilization 4 after getting into the Colonization expansion.  He has also been playing Champions Online which he is having trouble getting into and the guys discuss the many problems of WET. This week’s topic of the week centers around the announcement of the PS3 slim and the implications of the new $299 price point.  There are a lot of opinions flying around, but one unique point that is brought up is about the size of the slim and Sony’s decision...

The GameSpy Debriefings #94

by Jonathan Downin in Games1002 days ago

Welcome to the Rebel FM Debriefing.  This episode might as well be Rebel FM with guest Ryan Scott.  This is especially true near the end with Anthony sharing his QuakeCon experience. Ryan does start out this one with some Batman: Arkham Asylum impressions and he is enjoying it like everyone else.  Shadow Complex gets some more positive impressions here as well.  Moving onto the new Kojima produced Castlevania the guys point out the reverence Japanese developers get in relation to their western counterparts. After some brief words on the new...

Rebel FM Episode 29 – 08/13/09

by Jonathan Downin in Games1009 days ago

Microsoft seems to have really nailed it this summer with their XBLA releases.  Trials HD has gotten a lot of good press, but good press and good sales numbers are 2 different things.  Shadow Complex’s August 19th release is mere days away and Tyler almost breaks the press embargo at the beginning of this one.  It is probably safe enough to say that it will be worth the $10 at this point though. Anthony had a chance to play some Operation Flashpoint 2 and as expected, it seems to be for a very particular type of simulation crowd.  This...

Rebel FM Episode 28 – 08/06/09

by Jonathan Downin in Games1015 days ago

The new Gears of War 2 All Fronts pack is out and it sounds like the new single player “cut” is not good, but the pack includes so much other content that it’s still a good deal for the price.  It includes all previous map packs so at $20 dollars it is a steal, especially if you haven’t bought any of the previous content.  But be careful, only the retail disc includes all previously released stuff, the DLC version only gets you the new maps at the same price. Anthony got his hands on Batman Arkham Asylum and after putting...

CO-OP | Episode 207 – Mother Mission’s Desserts

by KirePDX in Games1019 days ago

Warning: do not watch this episode while hungry. The CO-OP crew plays like it’s on the Food Network to show off some local San Francisco cuisine during the segment breaks, and it’s a little distracting.  In the three gaming segments, a diverse group of guests explore some classics reborn, including Space Invaders Infinity Gene for the iPhone, the new Monkey Islands, and the recent Ghostbusters game. Both the recent Monkey Island releases, the updated Secret of Monkey Island and the new Tales of Monkey Island, have received near-universal...

Rebel FM Episode 27 – 07/30/09

by Jonathan Downin in Games1023 days ago

Rebel FM seems to get longer every week.  At almost 2 1/2 hours it feels like this could be cut down quite a bit, but there is a lot of actual game talk going on in this one. Arthur attended Comic-Con and he went hands-on with a lot of games that weren’t even available to the press during E3.  Dante’s Inferno sounds like it is shaping-up quite nicely.  If you like the God of War style and aren’t opposed by harsh and sexualized imagery, this could give God of War 3 a decent run for it’s money. Brutal Legend has been getting...

Rebel FM Episode 26 – 07/23/09

by Jonathan Downin in Games1029 days ago

Hello new intro song and podcast art.  Tyler is getting into Dead Space.  The game was heavily covered around its release by the enthusiast press, but it ultimately didn’t sell too well.  It is a great evolution of the action/horror genre and it’s great to hear it still getting some press this long after its release. The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition is out and the consensus is that it is a great remake of a classic game.  Matt has a few qualms with the updated graphics, but it seems like it is more due to the limitations...

Rebel FM Episode 24 07/09/09

by Jonathan Downin in Games1044 days ago

Up front Tyler shares a story about getting into Civilization 4 and looking up to find that the sun was up.  He makes a good point that the nature of PC gaming is that your face is generally right up against the screen causing you to lose track of the world around you. This really is the Jason Wilson episode.  If you are not familiar with him, he was the copy editor at 1UP before the lay-offs which took place in January.  He is talking about good writing practices and how to improve your writing.  Unless you are a master of your craft, there...

Rebel FM Episode 23 – 07/02/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1051 days ago

Some rather old games get some time up-front here.  The guys seem to have been on a multiplayer kick and have a few stories to tell about Halo 3 and GTA IV.  Anthony also had a humbling Civilization 4 game that took place over the span of a mere 30 minutes. The topic this week is games that you though were going to be bad, or just weren’t aware of, that turned out to be really good.  There are tons of games thrown out here, probably a lot that you feel the same about. Rebel FM goods are heading our way.  T-shirts are the first thing coming...

Rebel FM’s Thanksgiving in July Short-tacular!

by Jonathan Downin in Games1058 days ago

The guys over at Bethesda keep cranking out the DLC for Fallout 3 and it sounds like it just keeps getting better.  Arthur has played quite a bit of it and he is enjoying it.  He is also playing the new Call of Juarez and it sounds equally entertaining. Battlefield 1943 get some love as does the Uncharted 2 multiplayer beta.  There are going to be a lot of great multiplayer games this year with these and Halo ODST out this fall. Covered topics and games: Fallout 3: Point Lookout, Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood, Overlord 2, Battlefield 1943, Uncharted...
