MacBreak Weekly 138: All Things Conditioned

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1115 days ago

The idea of an Apple tablet/netbook has been floating around for almost years at this point.  The rumor mill is ablaze again with various sources being sited that we should watch out for something at WWDC in June.  Alex has been clamoring for something like this for a long time and things are no different now.  Just hearing these guys speculate is enough to get excited. The acquisition of Stanza by Amazon is interesting one.  For those of you that are not familiar with Stanza, it is a very powerful tool that gives you portability of documents. ...

MacBreak Weekly: 137 iScratch

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1123 days ago

The Apple App Store is about to hit a billion downloads and they are offering a great package of prizes for whoever lands that milestone download.  If you are interested in winning over $10,000 worth of Apple stuff keep a keen eye on the Apple front page in when it gets close start downloading like crazy. Apple has new commercials out firing back at Microsoft after their recent Mac-targeted ads.  They are all pretty good, but the formula may be wearing a little thin. Tweetie for Mac is out and it is one of the best Twitter clients out there. ...

MacBreak Weekly 136: EULA Schmeula

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1130 days ago

The guys are talking about the merits of Apple monitors versus their cheaper Samsung, NEC, etc. counterparts.  The consensus is that the Apple displays are worth the price if you really care about reliable picture quality. Apple continues to insist that Steve Jobs is still on track to return in June.  The point is made that the possibility of Jobs not returning is probably already built into Apple’s current stock price. The Palm Pre is rumored to be releasing about 2 weeks to a month before the also rumored update of the iPhone in June. ...

MacBreak Weekly 134: Leaky Bits

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1144 days ago

The Skype iPhone app came out this week and it seems to be working very well.  The word according to Leo is that with 3.0 of the iPhone OS Skype over 3G will be enabled.  That will make things very interesting. The date for this year’s WWDC has been set for June 8-12 and the MacBreak gang is fantasizing about Steve Jobs walking onto the stage during the keynote with a tablet running the iPhone OS. A little bit of a quiet week in Apple news.  If you haven’t checked out the current MacHeist bundle, head on over and see if it  might...

MacBreak Weekly 133: The Big Mo

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1150 days ago

If you haven’t heard about MacHeist it is a promotion that has been going on for a few years that bundles a selection of Mac apps at deep discounts for a limited amount of time.  As more people buy the bundle, more applications are added to the collection offered.  It’s a great deal, but there is some controversy that the developers are being gouged. Apparently the beta of the new iPhone OS 3.o is proving to have a few problems.  Again their are issues of battery life and disconnects when on the 3G network.  This smacks of iPhone...

MacBreak Weekly 132: iPhone 3.0

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1158 days ago

Copy/paste?  Check.  Stereo Bluetooth?  Check.  Phone-wide search?  Check. The group is talking about today’s announcement regarding the iPhone OS 3.0 update.  Almost everything that people have been asking for, except for video, is coming in this next release.  Some of the biggest additions are for developers, but we will definitely reap those benefits as well on the consumer side.  Unfortunately, this isn’t slated for release until summer.  That could mean anywhere from 3 to 6 months. As it turns out, the DRM in the new iPod...

MacBreak Weekly 131: Tweetie Gets The Bird

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1165 days ago

As many of you surely know Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, is on this season’s Dancing with the Stars and with the first episode  his showing was not good.  The guys are talking about it and as they say, he looked like he was having a great time, but he is not the most agile fellow.  Check out the Youtube video embedded below to see his smooth moves. The reports coming out of Taiwan are confirming rumors that Apple has placed orders for 10″ touchscreens which are fanning the flames about a possible Mac netbook coming this year. ...

MacBreak Weekly 130: I Did A Fiduciary Dooty

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1171 days ago

The announcements of new Apple products that happened yesterday morning is the main topic of discussion in this week’s episode.  3 of Apple’s main product lines were updated, but the results were not exactly amazing. The conclusions are: The Mac mini update was long needed, but the price is still too high; the iMac upgrades were ok and the reduction of the low end 24″ model is a welcome change; and the Mac Pro refresh is more confusing than anything. It’s not talked about on the show here, but there are rumors of an Apple...

MacBreak Weekly 129: Cry Of The Wild Woz

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1178 days ago

Leo and the MacBreak guys are talking about the rumors and recent pictures and video that depict an update to the Mac mini.  The mini has been long neglected and is definitely due for a refresh. The Safari 4 Beta has been released out of nowhere.  The opinions are generally pretty positive aside from some quibbles about the new handling of tabs in the title bar. iTunes is not doing well in making people happy.  Andy goes on a rant about account authentication and the new iTunes pass is very underwhelming and confusing. Kindle 2, Mac mini, Safari...

MacBreak Weekly 128: I Cannot Confirm Nor Deny

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1186 days ago

On this week’s edition, Frederick Van Johnson who was to become a show regular has revealed that he has been hired by Data Robotics, Inc. and due to Leo’s TWiT regulations will not be able to be on the show in the future. Palm has announced that the Pre will run Flash!  This is really big news considering how people have been clamoring Flash support in the iPhone since it’s launch.  Is it really necessary?  With native apps and native support for YouTube the iPhone seems to be capable of 95% of why anyone would want flash. The...

MacBreak Weekly 127: Is That A Kindle In Your Pocket?

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1193 days ago

Apple is to keep this multi-touch technology wrapped up for themselves.  They managed to get Google to agree to not use it in Android and as the release of the multi-touch equipped Palm Pre nears, there are mumurs of the possibility of litigation.  Apple was the first with the technology on a handheld device and really innovated with the iPhone, but much like the mouse, I believe these interface tools should be open. The prospect of semi-animated comics coming to iTunes is really cool.  This sounds like a great way to rejuvenate the comic book...

MacBreak Weekly 126: La-la-la-Leo

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1199 days ago

At the launch of the iPhone many people were up in arms about the lack of flash.  I’m not sure too many people really care anymore.  What do we really need it for at this point? The possible introduction of background processes being allowed on the iPhone is very interesting.  That would be a welcome change as long as it doesn’t affect the overall stability of the iPhone itself.  After seeing the implementation of multiple running processes on the Palm Pre, it’s something I think is really viable and needed. iPhone Flash speculation,...

MacBreak Weekly 125: 25 Years And Still Going Strong

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1207 days ago

Although the announcement of iLife ’09 at Macworld was somewhat underwhelming, the first impressions all around seem pretty positive.  The new iMovie and iPhoto have apparently seen the biggest improvements. The idea of putting OS X on a netbook is very appealing.  I’m very tempted to get an MSI Wind and put it on there.  Of course it wouldn’t do any heavy lifting, but that is what my Macbook Pro is for anyway. Cheers to Apple on 25 years and best wishes to Steve Jobs. iLife ’09, Steve’s health, iPhone 2.2.1 firmware...

MacBreak Weekly 124: The Warmth And Saturation Of Analog

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1213 days ago

The iTunes App Store is going very strong.  I really don’t see a real competitor in the market though Google and RIM are trying. More Jobs talk here.  I know most have probably heard enough about this, but if there is one group you want hear talk about this, this is it. Quote of the Cast: “The Apple booth at Macworld looked like the deck of an Imperial Starship.”  -Scott Bourne Steve Jobs’ health, App Store downloads, iPhone inauguration, Obama on Twitter, and more. Runtime – 1:54:36 Link (MacBreak Weekly)

MacBreak Weekly 123: The Great London Fire

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1220 days ago

Was Macworld just a community of people gathering together for 3 days to react to the announcements or a community of users who’s self-sufficient and is a self-sufficient group? It’s going to be REALLY difficult for Apple followers to keep Macworld together if Apple goes to CES next year.  It may be a better thing for Apple initially, but we’ll see. Macworld and Apple’s trade show future, CES, DRM-free iTunes, Palm Pre, and more. Runtime – 1:10:24 Link (MacBreak Weeekly)
