The Geekbox: Episode 25

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc1023 days ago

The whole first part of this week’s Geekbox is interspersed with Karen’s fascination with a rather racy take on Alice in Wonderland extended fiction in comic form.  The world of comics is a crazy one, and this illustrates exactly why. Comic-Con gets the crew interested, but there is less actual comic book news coming out of the show every year.  The conversation quickly moves onto TV and then movies.  It sounds like Bruno entertained and Fitch has the best story to tell about his experience taking dates to both Bruno and Borat a few...

The Geekbox: Episode 24

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc1030 days ago

It is a bit of a subdued episode this week without Karen and Greg to mix it up, but Jade Kraus and Justin Haywald from 1UP are on to round out the group.  As usual, Burn Notice starts off the discussion, but Jade and Justin are not followers, so things aren’t too lively. Justin hints at the fact that he has been playing the sequel to Professor Layton and the series sounds to only be getting better.  The first game got a lot of press coverage and was pushed pretty hard by Nintendo, but not everyone has played it.  Now may be a great time...

The Geekbox: Episode 23

by Jonathan Downin in Games1038 days ago

All episodes of The Geekbox should start out with Fitch spilling details about a date, just as he does here.  It sounds like we may be in for a string a somewhat successful Fitch Hitch stories.  His first dinner date was successful and he is getting ready for date #2 in which he will be going to the girl’s house.  The anticipation is thick. Comic book and movie news is a big topic this week.  The casting of Ryan Renolds as Green Lantern has comic book fans excited, but generally not in a good way. Karen and Ryan Scott gave the first Tales...

The Geekbox: Episode 22

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc1044 days ago

The difficult job market stories continue with Karen talking about the recent lay-offs at her company PlayFirst.  It sounds like they handled it in the best way possible and Karen was spared in the process.  It’s interesting to hear the juxtaposition of the against the 1UP layoffs in January. This is a very Fitch-centric show, just as it should be.  His recent trip to England sounds like it was enjoyable, if not uneventful.  The campaign to get Fitch a date is still on and going strong.  If you or anyone you know is interested in going...

The Geekbox: Episode 20

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc1058 days ago

Starting this one is some TV talk as per usual, but Ryan reveals that in addition to Burn Notice, he has also been watching Jon and Kate Plus 8.  Things take a turn for the weirder when the crew gets into a little bit of Mario fan fiction creation though. There is a big discussion about games journalism in the middle here where the group talks about what gives one person more credibility than someone else.  Greg takes the chance to tell people to write for Bitmob if they want to break into the industry. Karen is getting her driver’s license...

The Geekbox: Episode 19

by Jonathan Downin in Games1066 days ago

Why must Nintendo pu out games that make us have to buy a Wii?  There aren’t that many amazing games on the Wii, but there are those games that are just good enough to make the system almost worth a purchase. The recent changes in the World of Warcraft progression has Karen upset.  The point is introduced by Karen talking about the iPhone 3GS.  Oh how the opinions change.  Has WoW finally started its decline? The topic of people coming up to the Geekbox crew at conventions as if they know them comes up.  Almost all of us surely don’t...

The Geekbox: Episode 18

by Jonathan Downin in Games1072 days ago

After a week’s absense for E3 the Geekbox crew is back.  In usual fashion, spoilers are not avoided in any way, so if you haven’t seen UP yet you may want to skip the first 20 minutes. E3 is the focus here, but the takes here are fresh as they tend to be on The Geekbox.  The trailer for Star Wars: The Old Republic has galvanized the group with Karen and loving it and Greg feeling like it is not too cool to represent an MMO like that.  It really has to be taken as a “flavor piece.” There is some talk about Project Natal...

The Geekbox RAW EDITION: Episode 17

by Jonathan Downin in Games1086 days ago

The Terminator movie is the topic at the beginning here and the opinions are all over.  One thing is absolutely irrefutable though, T2 was and is completely awesome. Andrew Fitch is talking about his recent “romantic” adventures and it is entertaining as always.  Get ready for some stories about dates to vistas, being told he is not a very good dresser and a girl who is too intellectual to go play mini-golf. There may be no podcast next week due to E3, but Ryan relays that he is going to try and make that work. Wherein we discuss the...

The Geekbox RAW EDITION: Episode 16

by Jonathan Downin in Games, TV1094 days ago

This is the episode that did it, we have to add a TV category to the podcast list.  It probably should have been done a while ago and we can’t avoid it any longer. Lost takes up a good 25 minutes of the beginning of this week’s episode.  If you have not seen the finale and care about the series skip past the first 27 minutes. The Lost talk leads into a Star Trek that is not quite as long as the Lost talk, but again, the Geekbox crew goes into detail so if you care and haven’t seen it, skip it.  You should be safe after the 47...

The Geekbox: Episode 15

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc1098 days ago

Star Trek talk headlines the podcast with everyone chiming in on what they thought of the film.  Everyone loved it, including Ryan Scott who has a weirdly dedicated aversion to all previous entries in the series. Karen is training to enter the competitive crossword world.  This is a side of gaming that most probably haven’t even thought about. There is curious change in the recent Punch Out! of Piston Honda character being renamed to Piston Hondo.  The only thing that can be surmised from the change is that there must have been some request...

The Geekbox: Episode 14

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc1112 days ago

Mike Cruz and Jade Krause from at1UP are on this week.  Movie talk starts out this week’s Geekbox and the crew is all over the place.  X-men, Wolverine, Fast & Furious and many others get some time.  A lot of tastes are represented here with Fitch loving him some Vin Deisel.  He makes the point that he lacks charisma to such an extent that he becomes charismatic– he could be right. Ryan Higgins has been playing some Left 4 Dead and he is loving it with the new survival pack.  Jade makes a great point that Left 4 Dead’s...

The Geekbox: Episode 13

by Jonathan Downin in Games1119 days ago

As Ryan mentions at the beginning this episode was held until the embargo was up for the Bioshock 2 information.  The ironic thing is the embargo was broken and lifted early, but Ryan still held it– oh well.  Karen was there to see it and lays the story down in fine detail. Ryan Higgins goes on another one of his classic rants and this time it is about Firefly. He has a serious problem with the whole premise.  He is basically begging for hate mail with this one. A new series of G.I. Joe cartoons are out and they are called G.I. Joe Resolute. ...

The Geekbox: Episode 12

by Jonathan Downin in Games1127 days ago

The Geekbox is quickly becoming a TV podcast.  Lost takes up the first 20 minutes of the cast.  From here the group moves into some more general TV discussion. There is a little Pokemon talk in the games section, but that is all. There are more, 7 to be exact, Lost theories this week and they are all pretty ridiculous. No “Fitch-hitch” this week.  Maybe our patience will be rewarded with an extra long one next week. Wherein we discuss Street Fighter tournaments, TV sweeps periods, Lost 5×12 (spoiler warning!), the series premiere...

The Geekbox: Episode 11

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc1133 days ago

Better late then never as they say.  The Geekbox is back this week and the topics are pretty exclusively not about games.  There is a lot of comic talk with plenty of tangents to go around. The little game talk there is centers around the DSi and what people think about it.  Ryan Scott is pretty upset about the lack of GBA slot on the new handheld, but do that many people really care about that?  With DSiWare, won’t it be more convenient just to download your favorite classics assuming they are released on the service?  Of course that...

The Geekbox: Episode 10

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc1142 days ago

Lost and Watchmen talk at the beginning of this one.  Skip the first 30 minutes to get to safe, spoiler-free territory. The group talks about some games, but then moves onto GDC talk.  The goes to talk about a rant panel in which Heather Chaplin talked about the adolescence of the gaming industry in general as well as gender issues within the gaming industry.  Everyone has a lot to say on this subject and some insightful points are made about views of the industry in the U.S. and how that differences in other countries And just the thing everyone...
