TWiT 233: Apple ][ Forever

by Jon Cole in Tech739 days ago

TWiT unsurprisingly starts off with a bit of conversation about the iPad, with John and Leo taking their pessimist and optimist roles as per usual.  The biggest debate over the usability of this hardware concerns the readability of eBooks on the LCD screen.  Leo maintains that he appreciates the ability to skim through articles in newspapers and magazines, while John argues that the paper-like qualities of E Ink is still optimal. Next comes the debacle over Macmillan books on Amazon, which were temporarily pulled due to a conflict between publisher/retailer...

Engadget Podcast 156 – 07.24.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech931 days ago

There has been a lot of hope leading up to the release of the HTC Hero that it would be the 1st real Android showcase, but unfortunately, this isn’t the case.  Again, the hardware is just not up to the task with it lacking in pure horsepower and the keyboard simply not delivering.  Maybe next time.  Catch the details in Joshua’s review. The announcement of the partnership between Plastic Logic and Barnes & Noble shows promise as the first platform that could rival Amazon’s Kindle.  This news couldn’t come at a better...

Amazon remotely removed copies of 1984 from users’ Kindles last week and subsequently baffled many with the irony of their actions.  Things have since been explained, but it still spurs a lot of discussion on the still-present problems DRM poses.  It’s inexplicably weird how the book this happened with was 1984.  Irony at its finest. After developing HD-DVD, and subsequently losing out to Sony’s standard, Toshiba is now ready to produce Blu-ray players.  This is not too surprising after the recent announcement that Blu-ray...

TWiT 204: Taste Like Dirt

by Jonathan Downin in Tech935 days ago

Leo has been off in China for the past 2 weeks, but he is back with a small and tight group this week.  Kevin Rose was on a completely unrelated China trip last week so be ready for some China talk between the two. Google’s Chrome OS is being faced with more criticism as time goes by.  Bill Gates is the latest to come out and discount the announcement as unexciting.  The prevailing opinion is that with nothing to show Google will probably deliver nothing more than a stripped down linux distribution level piece of software. The rumors of...

MacBreak Weekly 138: All Things Conditioned

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1017 days ago

The idea of an Apple tablet/netbook has been floating around for almost years at this point.  The rumor mill is ablaze again with various sources being sited that we should watch out for something at WWDC in June.  Alex has been clamoring for something like this for a long time and things are no different now.  Just hearing these guys speculate is enough to get excited. The acquisition of Stanza by Amazon is interesting one.  For those of you that are not familiar with Stanza, it is a very powerful tool that gives you portability of documents. ...

Xbox 360 Fancast 112 — Bad Decisions

by Jonathan Downin in Games1033 days ago

Dustin has signed the guys up for a Halo tournament without telling them and made a wager on the match.  The fancast crew sounds like they have some incoming humiliation. Amazon has opened a new section in their Xbox 360 area that sells Xbox Live Arcade titles.  Previously you could buy Microsoft points from Amazon, but now you won’t have to always have extra points left over after purchasing games.  When you purchase a given game you will immediately be emailed the download code. Six Days in Fallujah has caused quite  controversy.  Seeing...

Engadget Podcast 133 – 02.13.2009: Pre-MWC edition

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1092 days ago

The Engadget guys always do a great job with show notes.  Check out all those details below. Joshua Topolsky loves himself some Palm.  I have never owned a Palm product, but the Palm Pre just may change that in 2010 with their plans to get it on multiple carriers.  That is if there are no serious problems with the release due to patent issues with Apple. You know it people. It’s the Engadget Podcast, back on the most terrifying Friday in February (or any month for that matter) — the 13th. This week you get to hear the dudes discuss...

gdgt weekly 025 – 02.12.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1093 days ago

The Kindle 2 looks like it improves on many of the issues that people had with the first one.  A better screen, better aesthetics and a more ergonomic design almost make it a must-buy if it wasn’t for the price point of $359.99.  Ouch. LCDs have really started to dominate the TV market.  The price has come down so much and the quality is good enough for the average consumer and this leads to mass-market appeal.  Plasma is slowly becoming a niche product as LCD becomes somewhat of a standard.  Great for Vizio, bad for Pioneer. Does anyone...

Engadget Podcast 131 – 01.30.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1106 days ago

The guys are talking the issues that have risen between Apple and Palm as it applies to patents.  The special thing about the Engadget podcast in particular is that Nilay Patel holds a law degree so the insights here are a bit more in depth and on the mark (probably) than most other podcast discussions. The introduction of the second generation Kindle is quickly approaching.  If they get the industrial design right on this iteration I have a feeling that we could see the Kindle becoming the iPod of the electronic reader world. I hadn’t heard...

gdgt weekly 023 – 01.29.2009

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1107 days ago

The guys are talking about the almost imminent announcement of the second generation Kindle at Amazon’s February 9th press conference.  The design really is the thing that has kept me from picking up the first one. Oh, Microsft’s poor Zune, things are not going well.  With over $100m decline in revenue last year in the Zune department and the iPod still be the quintessential choice for portable media devices, the outlook for it isn’t too bright.  This is sad since the Zune is actually pretty good and marketplace competition...

Diggnation | Episode 180 – A Couch in Maryland

by Jonathan Downin in Tech1155 days ago

After Alex being completely hungover last week he is back, beer in-hand, with Kevin on some random dude’s couch.  I’m sure a ton of people would love to have these guys at their place, but this seems a little awkward. Kevin is talking about the goings-on at Pownce on this episode.  I always think that it’s really cool how comfortable he is Kevin is with being transparent about his business endeavors.  It makes it so you can’t help but like the guy and want him to succeed. EDIT: Diggnation is now coming out on Wednesdays,...
