Active Time Babble IV: World of Warcraft and Dragon Age – 12/10/2009

by Ross Adams in Games792 days ago

After an unexpected hiatus Active Time Babble is back for it’s fourth episode. Alice Liang and Thierry “Scooter” Nguyen join Kat Bailey for the first segment this week, an interview with a couple the developers of World of Warcraft. While the discussion starts a little more retrospective it soon moves onto the upcoming Cataclysm expansion and the challenges that come from such a huge revamp. The success and longevity of WoW does seem to have taken everyone by surprise but Blizzard has certainly done a good job of expanding the...

It’s a long episode this week. Scooter is on talking about Borderlands since he reviewed it earlier in the week. It’s safe to say that he is enjoying the game a whole lot considering his B+ score. Jade talks about her semi-frustrating experience with Cooking Mama 3 and shares a love for the cuteness that is A Boy and His Blob. 1UP has added 2 more blog/columns to the site. Chiptuned and Add to Queue are centered around music in games and movies respectively. It nice to see 1UP offering more coverage on things in the periphery of gaming. In...

CO-OP | Episode 210 – Laundry Day

by Jonathan Downin in Games900 days ago

Starting out this week’s CO-OP is Little Kings Story for Wii.  For reasons unknown, this game has gotten a lot of coverage in the mainstream press.  It seems like there is some intriguing strategy gameplay mechanics in play here, but it doesn’t use the Wii’s unique aspects in any way.  This isn’t a game that would be getting this amount of time if it were a 360 or PS3 game, so it’s a little baffling why it has caught the attention that it has. Woldenstein RPG is the iPhone game of the week and it looks like it suits...

Weirdly enough, one of the least game focused podcasts is one of the first to be out in time to talk about the newly announced PS3 Slim.  While everyone welcomes the smaller design and price drop, Mike is the only one with plans to purchase it.  Sony better hope that this isn’t how it will be received on the mass market level. Justin Haywald is on again this week to talk some more about Professor Layton and happy with the new “hamster training” aspect of the game– maybe you just have to play it to appreciate it.  Mike...

Who knew Little King’s Story was such a big game?  It seems like one of the more notable games for Wii recently and Alice Liang is in to talk about it.  Unfortunately she is not completely positive on it even though Garnett is trying to defend it.  If you are looking for a rather fresh Japanese style Wii game this may be one to check out though. Along with the Joystiq guys, this week seems to the “back catalog week.”  Guest, Christian Nutt, has gone back to Lost Odyssey and David Ellis has gone back to Mass Effect.  Each have...

There is no real E3 game talk here, all you will find here is self-confessed “stupid crap.” Mike, aka M1 or M-Prime, is talking about some crazy Wii peripherals that he saw at E3 including “knockout gloves” and a Wii bowling ball.  Matt is not happy about 1UP not having its usual E3 booth babe gallery this year. There will be an at1UP special this week on Thursday where Mike and few others sit down with James Mielke to talk about various Mielke life facts and his future which entails becoming a father, going into the development...

The state of 1UP

by Jonathan Downin in Blog, Features, Games1130 days ago

As many of you may have heard, 1UP has been bought by UGO and this means many things, many of which we don’t know yet.  One thing we do know is that The 1UP show is done.  It really is shame to see such a great and unique take on the gaming scene go away.  It was certainly something that made Fridays worth the wait every week for me. It will be interesting to see what happens to the other 1UP productions like 1UP Yours, 1UP FM and LAN Party in the wake of this.  This story will be updated as more information comes in.  We wish everyone ...

1UP FM – 12/29/2008

by Jonathan Downin in Games1138 days ago

The 1UP crew is talking about the games of 2009.  More so than is usual it seems we don’t know too much about what is coming next year.  Hopefully there are a lot of games that haven’t been announced yet. Is Final Fantasy XIII really going to release next year?  I can’t see that happening.  I’m with Philip on Mafia II.  The first one was great and the second one looks to be a worthy follow-up.  It’s one of those games that kinda slipped through the cracks so if you haven’t played it, grab a copy of the PC...

LAN Party – 12/23/2008

by Jonathan Downin in Games1144 days ago

Wow, male/female ratio is 1:1 on this one.  That is an amazing feat within the gaming podcast scene, let alone the PC gaming podcast scene. Anthony is talking Second Life this week.  It is almost enough to bring you back to the good ‘ol days when Shawn Elliott was around.  Those days with Jeff Green are still sorely missed. Tina, stop eating during the podcast. In the final LAN Party of the year, the gang talks Christmas wishes, old-ass PC games, and a bunch of other unusually, even for us, random stuff. See you in 2009! Runtime –...

Legendary Thread – 12/22/2008

by Jonathan Downin in Games1144 days ago

The 1UP WOW crew delivers a podcast this week in spite of probably being able to get away with not releasing one.  Who is this Mikey character? Since release of the recent expansion is seems like there is just an insane amount of things to do in the game.  Will there ever be a World of Warcraft 2?  I can’t see what the motivation for Blizzard would be to do anything other than just update WOW.  Although if sales ever start to decline, that may be exactly what’s in the cards. On this episode the crew decides what faction they are...

1UP FM – 12/22/2008

by Jonathan Downin in Games1145 days ago

Wow, this came out of nowhere.  I didn’t expect there to be a 1UP FM this week, but Nick and Philip have delivered yet again.  No Tina this week though guys, sorry.  They say there will also be a show next week. I am really blown away by 1UP recently. The only real rival to them is IGN as GameSpot has drifted from their greater days.  The overall vibe of the IGN guys is great, but being regular goes a long way.  This and 1UP Yours having a podcast this Friday; above and beyond guys. We talk to DS masterminds 5th Cell about their groundbreaking...

The 1UP Show: Episode 12/19/08

by Jonathan Downin in Games1148 days ago

Last 1UP show of the season here.  Can we possibly hold out for a special or anything next week?  We can only hope. I haven’t been following Noby Noby Boy much but it really looks crazy.  I was a fan of this the creator’s previous series, Katamari Damacy, so count me as eager to give this one a shot.  As much as it seems innovation and quality of western developed games are surpassing there eastern counterparts, you just don’t see this kind of thing out of the west. Street Fighter 4 looks good in that “does anybody still...

Legendary Thread – 12/18/2008

by Jonathan Downin in Games1149 days ago

In the spirit of getting some more World of Warcraft stuff on here, the latest Legendary Thread from 1UP is out and they have a special guest on this week, Felicia Day.  If you don’t know who she is, watch Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog right now.  Seriously, it’s awesome. She has a sitcom type show based around a WOW guild called, The Guild, which she writes and stars in and is talking about it on this weeks episode.  I don’t know how I feel about it moving to Xbox Live for it’s second season, but highly worth checking...

1UP FM – 12/15/2008

by Jonathan Downin in Games1152 days ago

The guys recorded this show all in 1 day.  Seeing as this is the most comprehensive weekly gaming podcast around that is quite the feat. This Playstation Home stuff is really blowing up, but it seems like it’s for the wrong reasons.  There isn’t much to do in there.  Is it just a time kill and nothing more?  Maybe it’s just skewed more towards teenagers. Anthony Gallegos brings the folk.  Check it at the 44:30 mark. It’s a PSN symposium! Shane, Alice, and Matt L. join us to go a little more on-depth on Flower, Noby Noby...

The 1UP Show: Episode 12/12/08

by Jonathan Downin in Games1155 days ago

This week the 1UP guys and gals are covering Flower.  This is the next game from the people who brought is flow on PSN.  I wasn’t a big fan of flow, but I could appreciate the style.  Flower looks to continue the avant garde style, but with even more chilled out gameplay this time around.  Can’t wait. On this week’s 1UP Show, we import LocoRoco 2, preview Flower, and give impressions on Wrath of the Lich King. Is LocoRoco 2 more fun than its predecessor? How mesmerizing are the visuals in Flower? Is World of Warcraft more addicting...
