The Totally Rad Show – Episode 142: Gymnasticry

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Movies795 days ago

Brothers is the only movie this week, but the guys seem fine with that. While every drives home the impactful nature of the film, Dan declares it to be his favorite movie of the year. The performances are pointed out, with the most praise directed at Tobey Maguire. The guys also touch on the Prince of Persia trailer. The middle segment delivers another “Raised on Rad” entry with the guys getting their slot-car racing on. They seem to genuinely enjoy going back to this 80s classic, and it’s nice to know that some things are still...

The Totally Rad Show – Episode 141: Cranapple

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Movies802 days ago

Both of the movies this week have a polarizing effect on the crew. Ninja Assassin garners appreciation in an 80s action flick sort of way from Jeff and Alex, but Dan feels like it is teetering on the edge of being another Street Fight: Legend of Chun Li. The Road again strikes Jeff and Alex as well done, but Dan feels like it was a let-down, especially in its cinematography. Viggo Mortensen receives universal praise though. In the middle segment, the guys can’t help themselves and give the new Star War Force Trainer a go. It is intended to...

The Totally Rad Show – Episode 140: Storiented

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Movies809 days ago

Fantastic Mr. Fox is the 1st movie this week and the guys almost universally love it. They taut the fact that very few regular directors try their hand at stop-motion animation, and Wes Anderson benefits from that here. Precious also gets a lot of praise from the guys, and is put in the same space as Shindler’s List and Boys Don’t Cry. In honor of Thanksgiving, the middle segment finds the guys making hand turkeys. It is a lighthearted, yet fun affair, with plenty of puns to go around. Assassin’s Creed 2 takes up the game section...

The Totally Rad Show – Episode 139: Logic Police

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Movies816 days ago

Most of the film podcasts have skipped over 2012, but TRS tends to skew a little more mainstream, so they are covering it this week. Jeff and Alex found it to be a complete waste of time, but Dan blows minds by saying that he loved it– Jeff may never recover. The guys also saw Pirate Radio and deem it to be an undeniably enjoyable film. Before going into the game segment, which is all about Modern Warfare 2 this week, the guys decide to crack open the Prestige Edition of the game, and give the night-vision googles a thorough test. Get ready...

The Totally Rad Show – Episode 138: Funky Fly

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Movies823 days ago

It’s a duo of sci-fi flicks with “the” in the title this week. Neither movie really won the guys over with The Box meandering through its 2nd act, and The Fourth Kind trying too hard to be taken seriously. The Box is probably the one more worth checking out though. In the spirit of summer, the guys picked up some kites, Star Wars kites to be exact. They finally get them put together, but the attempts at getting them in the air are markedly less successful. Let’s hope for a follow-up segment in the future so we can see those...

The Totally Rad Show – Episode 137: Donames

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Movies830 days ago

Gentlemen Broncos is first up in movies this week. This comes from Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess, and he seem to deliver some more quirky characters here. Jeff thoroughly enjoyed the film, but Dan found it to be somewhat disappointing. One thing everyone can agree on is that Jemaine Clement, of Flight of the Conchords fame, delivers an unforgettable performance. There are a lot of games covered this week. Things start out with footage shot during a New Super Mario Bros.Wii event where the guys seemed to be enjoying the game. Forza 3 gets...

The Totally Rad Show – Episode 136: Finger Twister

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Movies837 days ago

Halloween is upon us, so the TRS boys have taken this opportunity to dress up and Dan clearly wins this one with some good ‘ol PBS love. Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant is the movie this week and Dan is the only one who has good things to say about it. It looks like it skews young, but there may be some enjoyment to glean from it. When and why did John C. Reilly go from Paul Thomas Anderson films to Will Ferrel comedies and children’s movies? The Game with a Name segment returns, this time with Katie Featherston and Micah...

The Totally Rad Show – Episode 134: Negative Fun

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Movies851 days ago

Couples Retreat is the first movie this week and it is safe to say that all 3 of the guys enjoyed it. Everyone had some problems with it, but the consensus seems to be that it is worth watching even if you wait until it’s available on Netflix. Bronson doesn’t go over quite as well with even Jeff, who generally enjoys more experimental type films, calling it too avant garde for even him. Book-ending the games section this week is a segment that follows the guys on a “Bungie hike.” In light of the recent release of Halo 3:...

The Totally Rad Show – Episode 133: Funtastic

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Movies858 days ago

Starting out movies this week is Zombieland the guys loved it. It sounds like it has just the right amount of camp to be funny without being satirical in a Shawn of the Dead sort of way. It is a genre film done right. Ricky Gervais’s The Invention of Lying also get the thumbs up here, but it doesn’t quite reach the potential of its premise. The guys take the middle segment to sit down with the director of Trick r’ Treat, Michael Dougherty and play an old VHS-based board game from the 80s called Nightmare. Oh how times have changed. Aion...

The Totally Rad Show – Episode 132: WYSIWYG Ninja

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Movies864 days ago

The show is still looking great after its “relaunch” last week. Surrogates is up first this week and the results are mixed. The scale starts with Alex who enjoyed it and ends with Dan who almost hated it. You can flip that scale with A Serious Man which finds Jeff enjoying it and Alex pretty much hating it due to its overly dark and serious tone. In between the movie and game segments the guys give a tour of the Magic Castle in L.A. It is an exclusive club for mainly magicians and aspiring magicians to train and perform, but they also...

The Totally Rad Show – Episode 131: Bullet Testicles

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Movies872 days ago

The Totally Rad Show is back and all spiffied-up. As the guys say, it has been a long time coming, but all of the graphical elements of the show have been cranked up a notch along with a new theme song. While is doesn’t fundamentally change the show, it does elevate it an appreciable amount.  TotallyRadShow.com is also all new and Squarespace-ified. Jennifer’s Body, the latest from Diablo Cody, does not do anything for Alex, but Jeff enjoyed it and Dan totally loved it. The results of the TRS summer movie wager is the real draw in movies...

The Totally Rad Show – Episode 130: Meat Flesh

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc, Movies879 days ago

The first movie this week is the 3D animated, post-apocalyptic 9.  Alex enjoyed it a lot citing the adult-oriented nature of the storytelling, but Dan and Jeff aren’t quite as high on it with Jeff having a few problems with the actual visual quality of the film.  A movie that the whole group can agree on is Whiteout, which no one liked. The second segment this week has the guys talking to a PAX audience about some of their favorite games of the show including 2 smaller titles, Shank and DeathSpank.  The Beatles: Rock Band fills the regular...

The Totally Rad Show | Episode 129 – Lawyerdom

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Movies, TV886 days ago

Whether it is because Dan has been on leave for the past week or there is just nothing notable out, there is no movie review this week.  Instead, the guys take the chance to talk about some big movie news including Disney’s acquisition of Marvel and the Jon Favreau signing on to do an adaptation of Cowboys & Aliens.  The movie section ends with talk of the return of Michael jackson’s Captain EO and Star Tours. Guitar Hero 5 takes up all of the game time with a segment that was largely shot at Neversoft.  Alex and Jeff got a chance...

The Totally Rad Show | Episode 128 – Gauge

by Jonathan Downin in Games, Misc, Movies893 days ago

Ang Lee’s Taking Woodstock is the movie this week and none of the guys could get into it.  The pacing sounds to be on the slow side and Alex’s biggest problem was that there doesn’t seem to be any real conflict. For some reason Alex and Dan decided to pick up some laser tag guns and they head out to a park and give them a go.  It’s looks like a fun time, but it doesn’t look “$100 each” fun. Batman: Arkham Asylum‘s combat has the guys really excited.  While Alex has some minor complaints about the...

Diggnation | Episode 217 – Live from Arizona: Alex Hates Facebook

by Jonathan Downin in Misc, News, Tech899 days ago

Diggnation has been going crazy with the live shows recently and this week’s episode was shot live in Arizona.  Things get a little rowdy with the Go Daddy girls and Kevin hits a ball with a golf club right at an audience member.  No one was hurt and the person actually caught the incident on video with the ball hitting the camera.  Kevin, for future reference, don’t hit balls with golf clubs at people. Starting out the stories this week is the new Chevy Volt which is due to debut in 2011 at a claimed 230 miles per gallon– not...
