The podcast, name withheld, is hosted this week by Ray Barnholt who usually sticks to retro games, although this week he’s all “beards and big guns” in order to fit the mold of this show. Talk on the gaming front starts off with Scooter and Justin discussing Alan Wake, but differ in their opinions of some of the game’s quirkier features. The guys give their opinions on Picross 3D before moving on to Scooter’s opinions on Fallout: New Vegas which sounds promising. Justin has been playing Lost Planet 2, which most of...
This week, the podcast former known as…will be known as 1UPchuck. Jeremy takes the helm again but announces this will be his last week and it sounds like we will finally get to see the future of the flagship next week. This week is shaping up to be the Activision episode. First up, the news that Bungie signed a 10 year publishing agreement with Activision sent the games world for a spin and Frank Cifaldi clarifies some of the details. The next Call of Duty game, Black Ops, was also just announced and is the next game from Treyarch and the...
We finally hear a peep from the flagship 1up podcast, headed up again by Jeremy Parish and being called “The Ugly Babycast” for the week. The show starts off with Jeremy, Sam, Frank, Ray and Cameron Davis from Krome Studios discussing the exodus from Infinity Ward to Respawn Entertainment as they haven’t had a show since it started happening. The show then switches gears to a separate recorded segment which includes Tina and Nelson talking with Jeremy about seeing the Halo Reach beta. More somber talk of the recent Sega layoffs...
iPad, and the potential it holds for gaming, kicks off this week’s 4 Guys 1UP. John and David have a lot to say about it, and the prevailing opinion is mixed, but John is the most positive. He makes some good points about game developers needing to approach the device differently and that it may be targeting at a more casual audience. It’s easy to forget that not everyone uses computers in a multi-tasking, power user sort of way. John also touches on GamePro’s approach to capitalizing on these kinds of new devices for digital...
David Hellman, artist most notably known for his work on Braid, is on this week in the developer chair, and he proves to be a fun and thought-provoking guest as always. With David as 1 of the premiere names in indie development, indie games take center stage and kick things off this week. The pureness of Canabalt gets some attention and Area5‘s Ryan O’Donnell talks about his experience as a judge for the IGF awards.
3D and games get some discussion and Ryan provides a nice breath of fresh air with his optimism in the face of...
Finally, it’s back to the original vision for 4 Guys 1UP with a former developer in Amer Ajami as the special guest this week. Amer is a former editor for GameSpot, but was working as a producer on the EA’s Command & Conquer team since 2002. The 1st half of the show is spent on his history and his take on development. Amer has some interesting things to say about working conditions in relation to the recent Rockstar issues over working conditions.
Amer also starts the game talk with his recent addiction to Modern Warfare 2. Sam hasn’t...
This is another non-traditional episode due to the holidays. 1UP friend, and Sega Producer, Constantine Hantzopoulos is back and the whole show is dedicated to allowing him to provide a bigger window into the development process. He is the perfect person to do this as he is clearly not inhibited by PR pressures in any way.
Constantine starts out by covering his path through the industry and continues on to talk about problems with the structure of the development/publishing system. He also touches on some of the problems with past Sega projects...
Christmas has come and gone, but David still managed to put out a show. It is a 2 man affair this week with the holidays making it difficult to bring in a special guest and the regulars out of the office, but GamePro‘s John Davison is on.
John kicks things off with an update about what is happening at GamePro and how the WhatThePlay situation played out. This leads into a review of the year in games. Bayonetta gets some time, and the guys move into talking about Q1 releases.
Prediction for 2010 take up the last half of the show. The guys are...
There aren’t that many games covered this week, but the games that are, get a serious amount of time. Mass Effect 2 kicks things off, and the guys are not shying away from spoiler, but David does announce the time-stamps before the spoilers begin. It sounds like a lot has changed from the first one, and the tech is much improved.
Heavy Rain also gets a ton of time since Matt has played a significant amount of the game. The games seems somewhat divisive, but it may just culminate into something truly fresh.
With the 2 big games out of the way,...
4 Guys 1UP is back to its regular format this week with special guest Gary Whitta. If you have been following the PC gaming scene for while, you may remember Gary as the Editor-in-Chief of PC Gamer. He has gone onto screenwriting, and his latest is the Denzel Washington thriller, Book of Eli. Gary has also had a hand in the stories of Duke Nuken Forever and Gears of War. He is an amazing guest, and David deserves a lot of credit for thinking of him.
A new Medal of Honor game is in the works, and it is going to be a “modern combat”...
