Retronauts Episode 91: 04/16/2010

by Alex Martin in Games664 days ago

Jeremy takes a back seat to Frank for this reunion episode with Tengen programmers Steve Woita, Franz Lanzinger, and Mark Morris. Tengen was Atari’s console publishing and development branch, porting arcade games to the NES, and later to the Genesis. Nintendo’s strict restrictions on NES developers — manufacturing cartridges, dictating the number that were manufactured, and taking a large cut of the profit for themselves — made for an oppressive atmosphere. Tengen mostly made games without Nintendo’s Seal of Approval,...

David Ellis leaves 1UP for 343 Industries

by Jonathan Downin in News706 days ago

David Ellis has announced that he will be leaving 1UP after over 2 years at the outlet. He will be moving on to Microsoft’s Halo team, 343 Industries. In his departing 1UP blog, he states that he will be part of the Halo Waypoint team. Halo Waypoint is an interactive Halo franchise front-end for Xbox Live that was launched late last year to track individual stats and achievements across games in the franchise. Ellis’s stint as the front man of 1UP’s flagship podcast, 4 Guys 1UP, was short lived. He mentions that he will...

Casting Gear 003 – 1UP

by Jonathan Downin in Features791 days ago

Editor’s note: Casting Gear is a series about podcasting and the tools used in the process. In this series, we hope to demystify the podcasting process and show the wide range of tools and methods that different podcasters use to produce a show. In addition to listing the software and hardware used, a brief rundown of the work-flow for the given podcast will be provided. Delving into technical minutiae isn’t the goal here, it is to provide a window into the different approaches that are in practice. The following text, unless otherwise noted,...

at1UP: GDC Indie Games Special

by Jonathan Downin in Games1052 days ago

I guess the post here yesterday about Sharkey deserving more work got through to someone over at 1UP.  We are moving closer to complete control– This whole episode is about the indies.  It’s Game Developers Conference week and Scott Sharkey is sitting down with independent developers and designers and letting them talk.  No structure, no hard-hitting interview questions, just chat.  This is what GDC is all about. David Hellman, the artist of last year’s highly acclaimed Braid is on this one and you can bet he has a few things...

Good Grief: 03/23/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1053 days ago

The group is talking about the What’s in the Box video that surfaced last week.  There was a lot of speculation that it was a viral video to promote Half Life 3 or something coming from Valve, but that has since been debunked.  It’s a cool video with a lot of atmosphere, but if you hate the filming style of Cloverfield skip this one as well. Sam Kennedy leaves halfway through the cast and things devolve from there, in a good way.  There is plenty of random philosophy, bad puns and plenty of random reader questions.  Chris Plante...

Anthony Gallegos of Rebel FM is on this week.  He is on to talk about Resident Evil 5 as he recently finished the game with Philip Kollar, also of Rebel FM, and is an especially big fan of zombies.  The group is not talking too kindly of the A.I. for Sheva, but it’s not as bad as these guys make it sound. The focus and format of this show is still not very clear.  Something needs to be done with the format to make it a little more cohesive. One big announcement is that Jade and Mike will be on the Geekbox this week so look for that tonight...

Good Grief: 03/16/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1060 days ago

Former 1UPer Philip Kollar from Rebel FM is on and he is answering a few questions from the 1UP boards.  The questions range from what exactly he would like to be doing within the industry to childhood digressions. There is a good discussion about the merits of Sonic actually being able to be done well in 3D and how the old-school 2D versions weren’t able to be as memorable as other classic games simply because of the speed of the gameplay.  This leads into a discussion of the revival of 2D games and what freedoms DLC and downloadable games...

The game starting out this week’s episode is MadWorld.  This game has been almost unanimously loved by the gaming press and that continues here.  David Ellis has a lot to say about it and even has some insight into the games story and how it is actually smarter than many people my realize. Resident Evil 5 and the propossal that it is stuck in some sort of no-man’s land between action game and survival horror game is again brought up here.  Though they admit the ridiculousness of it themselves, a few of the guys say that even though...

As with every podcast this week Watchmen is the topic of the first half of the podcast.  There is no attempt to be spoiler-free so if you haven’t seen it yet, and don’t want to know what happens, you should skip the first 12 minutes. The box art of Fight Night Round 4 has been released and it features Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson in their primes.  This has caused some controversy.  What do you think about this match-up on the box? And old-school Sega fans, fire up the email clients because Jade has some things to say about how lucky...

Good Grief: 03/09/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1067 days ago

The group played Killzone 2 for this week’s episode.  They keep saying that they had fun and liked it, but the overall impression you get after hearing them talk about it is less the great. Sharkey’s “Recession Gaming” segment is a nice part of the podcast.  He is talking about Team Fortress 2D this week and everyone seems to like it quite a bit.  He even goes so far as to call it better than Team Fortress 2 for those that want a less intensive experience. In another feature, Armchair Design, the topic of ideas for Portal...

Garnett is talking about H.A.W.X. and making it sound better than any other impressions around.  It doesn’t seem like it going to be for anyone who isn’t really into flight combat games, but it may be the next game for people that have been waiting for the now stagnant genre to have a good new title. The Ghostbuster game sounds surprisingly amazing.  It’s not a game that has been touted as a AAA title, but it may just be a summer sleeper hit.  The graphics are great, it has all the right people involved and just sounds fun. ...

at1UP is back this week with its second episode and the group is talking about Wrestling and geeking out on this year’s Wondercon.  Hearing people being really into wrestling is something that most will never understand, but we’re not geek elitists. What at1UP will eventually morph into is hard to know, but at the moment it seems to be lacking a focus.  The topics are all over and games are just a part of the discussion.  It seems more like a celebration of geek topics.  The Geekbox was a bit like this before finding it’s stride,...

Good Grief: 03/02/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1074 days ago

In the first official episode of 1UP’s new Good Grief podcast Anthony Gallegos joins to answer some questions from the fans. With Scott Sharkey on the cast we get a lot of dirty anecdotes and talk of games that are all very low budget and mostly not very good.  He is definitely a unique voice though and is a welcome member of the cast. If you are looking for hard-hitting gaming discussion, this is not it.  But if you just want to listen to a lot of funny stories and jokes with gaming as a context, look no further. There is no iTunes link...

Good Grief: 02/26/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games1079 days ago

In the inaugural episode of 1UP’s newly formed Good Grief headed-up by Tina Sanchez, the crew, including Chris Plante from UGO, is discussing the show and the type of segments they will be doing.  This is technically labeled episode 0 according to Tina’s twitter, so it is something of a test show. A great story here about about Sam Kennedy drunk-buying a TV.  If this podcast encourages these kinds of stories, consider it a regular around here. The second half of this 1st podcast is dedicated to talking about the whole 1UP/UGO situation. ...

at1UP 2/24 – a podcast appears

by Jonathan Downin in Games1080 days ago

We get a new podcast from 1UP today.  There is not too much information on it other than it will cover the current big topics and posts on the site with insight from editors.  They want to keep the podcast short and they succeed with this first one. Whether or not this will be a weekly show or if it will be added permanently to the site here is still to be seen. It’s not on iTunes yet, so you will have to wait on that. All you people searching for Jade Kraus stuff should be happy though.  She’s on this one guys!!!!1!111 Join the at1UP...
