The Totally Rad Show – Episode 161: Butter It Up

by Ross Adams in Games, Movies759 days ago

The “what if I were a superhero” aspect of Kick-Ass appeals to many geeks and the TRS crew are no exception. While Dan and Alex do have some criticisms they are fairly minimal, all 3 hosts agree that it is a fantastically well done movie across the board. The fact that the film is able to juggle several genre tropes and still able to resonate is cited as it’s main strength. The guys also discuss the news that Joss Whedon is apparently in final negotiations to direct the upcoming Avengers movie, a prospect that has them all very...

The Totally Rad Show – Episode 160: Bubble Tape

by Ross Adams in Games, Misc, Movies, Tech766 days ago

Date Night sounds like it’s destined to be great with Tina Fey and Steve Carell in leading roles but the TRS guys aren’t too sure what to make of it. They all loved the first half of the film, an apparently fairly honest and realistic portrayal of a long term relationship. There are some laughs to be had but the guys are all disappointed with the direction the film went in. With no major gaming releases to cover the video game section can be and is in fact dedicated to nothing but iPad talk. Initally just talking about the device in...

The Totally Rad Show – Episode 159: Olyphan

by Ross Adams in Games, Movies, TV773 days ago

Fun is the general consensus on Clash of the Titans from the TRS guys, not a great movie by any means. Dan thinks if a little bit of humour were injected it could potentially be very good but as it is it’s just a fun spectacle with some very cool action sequences. The guys struggle to praise Metro 2033, for the most part they appreciate some of the ideas but Dan and Alex just couldn’t get into it. Even Jeff who really liked the game, for the world and the odd eastern european sensebility, can’t fully recommend it because he encountered...

The Totally Rad Show – Episode 158: Hick

by Ross Adams in Games, Movies780 days ago

Alex initially wrote off How to Train Your Dragon as yet another mediocre Dreamworks computer animated feature but it is far from that. All 3 of the TRS guys gush about the film, Jeff even puts it up there as his favourite movie of 2010. The overall feeling is that the movie has a great story for all and is just generally really enjoyable. The guys also discuss the Scott Pilgrim vs The World trailer that was released last week. All three of the, even Alex who wasn’t a fan of the comic, are very excited by what they see. And they have faith...

The Totally Rad Show – Episode 157: Staying Excellent

by Ross Adams in Games, Movies786 days ago

Disappointment all round for this weeks movie, The Runaways. The guys all agree it’s beautifully shot and they do enjoy the actors involved but boring is the word used most often to describe the movie. While Dan did enjoy the first half he also feels it gets boring as it goes. The guys are cautiously optimistic for Predators as they discuss the recently released trailer. Dan is oddly indifferent to God of War 3, in contrast to Jeff and Alex who are fairly blown away with the scale of it. Alex and Jeff continue to agree, this time about the...

The Totally Rad Show – Episode 156: Celebratorium

by Ross Adams in Games, Movies793 days ago

It’s the 3 year anniversary of TRS but rather than have a big celebratory blowout the guys decided to have a mostly regular show. Two films discussed this week, kicking off with Green Zone, which only Dan and Jeff got to see. Jeff is mostly very positive about the movie, citing some great performances especially from Matt Damon, Dan is less positive but both at least agree it’s an enjoyable film. Shutter Island is up next and all 3 of the guys saw this one, Jeff again is very positive, having read the book he doesn’t seem as hung...

The Totally Rad Show – Episode 155: Depp It Up

by Ross Adams in Games, Movies801 days ago

A mixed bag of reactions for Tim Burton‘s take on Alice in Wonderland this week. Alex wonders if he is starting to dislike Burtons style after all these years but that being said he still really enjoyed the film. Jeff liked it but doesn’t seem too enthused by it. he seems slightly hung up on the fact it’s so different from the old Disney animated film which is his only Alice reference point. Dan confuses everyone by opening his review with a “joke”, the gist is that he isn’t sure he enjoys the Wonderland story...

The Totally Rad Show – Episode 154: Ah-Mazing

by Ross Adams in Games, Movies808 days ago

Cop Out is the first feature Kevin Smith has directed which he didn’t also write, perhaps that’s a bad thing as the TRS guys didn’t like it very much. For a comedy they didn’t laugh too often, they do enjoy the idea of a throwback to the 80s buddy cop movies, so much so in fact they end up chatting about them for a while. It doesn’t sound like Cop Out is particularly bad, as a comedy it just seems to fall flat and the guys are fairly indifferent to the rest. After briefly playing some head games it’s onto this...

The Totally Rad Show – Episode 153: 5/12/86

by Ross Adams in Games, Movies, TV815 days ago

This weeks tubular episode of The Totally Rad Show kicks off with a review of the newly released flick Short Circuit. As huge Steven Guttenberg fans both Alex and Jeff loved it. There’s some debate about whether Fisher Stevens’ gnarly indian character could be considered offensive. Dan “Space 1999′s” the guys by admitting he was not a fan of the film, it seems he didn’t quite get it. Ghosts ‘N Goblins is a big hit in the arcades but now the radical Capcom has brought it home by porting it to the Nintendo...

The Totally Rad Show – Episode 152: Rambly Wandering

by Ross Adams in Games, Movies, TV822 days ago

In the past the TRS guys suggested Benicio Del Toro could be a real life wolfman but that doesn’t seem to have been transferred to the screen. Disappointment all round for The Wolfman, the style of the film gets the most praise with the guys enjoying the old school vibe. There’s some excitement at the prospect of Darren Aronofsky remaking Robocop. While they aren’t fans of the remake heavy climate there is some hope that Aronofsky could bring something interesting to the story of Robocop. God of War with extra boobs is how the...

The Totally Rad Show – Episode 151: 12 Kinds

by Ross Adams in Games, Movies829 days ago

It’s disappointment all round for From Paris with Love, it’s a gunfight movie with poorly presented and uninteresting gunfights according to the TRS guys. They have pretty much nothing positive to say about the film, Alex goes as far as to say there are some laugh out loud story moments that weren’t intended as such. The other Avatar movie got a proper trailer for the Superbowl, with the love TRS has for the Last Airbender tv show they had to discuss this one. It has certainly got them all very excited, they all agree the effects...

The Totally Rad Show – Episode 150: Hockey Kahn

by Ross Adams in Games, Movies, Tech836 days ago

Edge of Darkness is the movie this week, the guys describe it as part revenge film, part political intrigue film. Alex and Jeff think the execution of this combination is very well done and enjoyed how each aspect complimented the other to give things a bit more impact. Dan however disagrees completely and in fact thought that each aspect of the movie was mediocre and the combination made them less than that. In a previous episode Dan hoped for a shooter where the distant sounds of battle were in fact other players, MAG certainly fits that criteria....

The Totally Rad Show | Episode 149: Demangels

by Ross Adams in Games, Movies, Tech843 days ago

Legion is this weeks movie, Dan and Jeff were pretty disappointed with the film. Jeff cites his lack of connection to the characters as one of his biggest problems with it, Dan was put off by the inconsistent tone and pacing. Alex was much more positive, stating he enjoyed the fiction and thinks it would be a great first date movie. 500 days of Summer director Marc Webb is the new Spiderman director, everyone seems cautiously optimistic about how the movie will turn out under him. To promote Mass Effect 2, Bioware sent the TRS crew to Ultrazone...

The Totally Rad Show – Episode 148: Fighting Jenga

by Ross Adams in Games, Movies850 days ago

The Book of Eli is the movie this week, notable for being written by recent 4 Guys 1UP guest Gary Whitta. The guys are all a bit down on the movie, they all enjoyed the setpieces and action scenes but the things surrounding them didn’t do much for them. The crew discuss the recent news of Spiderman 4′s shift from Sam Raimi helmed sequel to director-less reboot. Jeff hopes this bodes well for his hopes of Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Peter Parker, the general feeling seems to be that this is a good thing at least for Raimi fans. When the guys...

The Totally Rad Show – Episode 147: Toilet Time

by Ross Adams in Games, Movies857 days ago

Daybreakers is the first movie discussed this week, the guys seem to agree that it’s a movie full of great ideas that just falls flat. Dan makes a point that were it a made for tv movie it would be considered great but it doesn’t quite meet the expectations set by seeing it in a theatre. There is an air of disappoint when talking about the second film this week, Youth in Revolt. All 3 of the guys are very apathetic about it, alot of the problems seem to come from some elements of the book not transferring well to the screen. Vigil Games’...
