Taking a break from reviewing the big hitters this weeks movie is an independent Australian film called Animal Kingdom. While all the guys enjoyed the film they also agree it has issues, Alex thinks it went on about half an hour longer than it had to. Darrenofkys next film, Black Swan, is described as “the wrestler with ballet” by Dan at one point as the guys discuss the trailer. There’s a hint of some kind of supernatual element to the movie which has Jeff especially excited.
Another new segment this week “As seen on TV”...
Scott Pilgrim vs The World is the movie this week, the guys talked about the comic book the film is based on back in episode 55. Jeff and Dan loved it but Alex wasn’t a fan, when it comes to the movie adaption though everyone thought it was a great movie. Jeff compares it to Kick-Ass in that it’s a movie with a very modern feel for a very modern geek centric audience. Alex worries that the fact it’s a movie for geeks may mean it’s too niche to connect with most people, judging by how it’s doing at the box office that...
The Other Guys is the movie this week on TRS, while all 3 enjoyed it to a certain extent they definetly had their issues with it. Some of the comedy fell a little flat, Dan and Alex also comment that they are ready for Will Ferral to step up his comedy beyond his same old schtick. The guys also discuss two upcoming movies, both titled Gravity. The first is from director Alfonso Cuarón and will star Robert Downey Jr, while the second will be directed by Louis Leterrier and will evolve Earth in zero g. They discuss which film most appeals to them...
The TRS crew has highly anticipated Christopher Nolan‘s newest flick, Inception. Going in with high expectations they have varied feelings on the film. Alex starts off, he really enjoyed the movie and thought it was great fun but it wasn’t quite the gamechanger he had been led to expect it would be. Jeff adored the film, citing the emotional story as something that he especially enjoyed. Dan also loved the film but seems to share Alex’s feelings that it wasn’t quite the epic masterpiece it was being built up to be.
The...
It’s a two movie episode this week, starting with the Robert Rodriguez produced Predators. Mixed feelings on this one, with Jeff being especially negative about it. He does say alot of it may be down to the fact he watched the original Predator film just before seeing Predators. As a result Predators seemed like a much lesser film to him and just didn’t impress him at all. Alex and Dan are both alot more positive about the film, both feeling it was alot of fun. Dan does think the first half of the movie was better than the latter half...
This weeks movie is Knight & Day and the TRS guys are surprisingly high on it. Jeff starts things off by saying that the film is alot of fun, he makes note that Tom Cruise‘s consistently positive character makes for a fairly unique situation. Alex and Dan pretty much reiterate his sentiment, all agree it’s very funny with some great action sequences and is surpisngly unique.
With E3 having just finished there aren’t alot of new games to talk about so Jeff decided it’d be a good idea to focus on some smaller games. Kicking...
The Totally Rad Show returns to CastMedium just in time for an E3 blow-out. All three of the TRS crew were at the event so they all chip in on the discussion of the Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony press conferences. While they weren’t overly impressed with any of the showings they agree that Nintendo “wins” with their slew of fantastic looking game announcements aswell as the 3DS.
This weeks movie review of Toy Story 3 provides an interlude to the game talk. To say the guys love this movie would almost be an understatement. Dan uses...
After a brief discussion of SNL and older SNL movies the guys get down to their thoughts on the the newest spinoff from the show, MacGruber. Alex is the most impressed of the group, even saying he laughed harder and more than when he saw The Hangover. Jeff and Dan really liked it too but aren’t quite as high on it, they still highly recommend it and think it was really funny. A short talk about whether an actual MacGyver movie can work follows, the concept is a good one but the guys are skeptical.
Red Dead Redemption is the game this week...
Indifference is probably the best way to describe how the TRS crew feel about Ridley Scott‘s take on Robin Hood. While all of them agree it is a very well made film they also think it’s missing a certain something. Max von Sydow gets praised for his apparent standout performance in the movie with Dan also citing a specific scene by Cate Blanchett as a highlight. The guys certainly recommend the movie but there’s no real excitement for it.
Derrick Comedy the group behind Mystery Team take part in this weeks “Game with fame”...
The guys are almost down on Iron Man 2 but not quite, they mostly agree that it’s at least on the same level as the first film. Jeff has the most complaints about it, he feels Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr indulged themselves a little too much and the movie suffers for it. A trailer for Super 8, a collaboration between Steven Spielberg and JJ Abrams, was attached to Iron Man 2. Dan goes on to describe the contents of the trailer and also express his disappointment although he admits that maybe because it was so hyped up beforehand.
Peter...
The original A Nightmare on Elm Street is held very high among the TRS guys, Dan and Jeff especially. The remake however won’t be looked back on by them in the same way, they have many issues with it. Jeff’s main gripe is that the film lacks the originals playfulness, it’s a fairly monotone affair. Alex cites the lack of any clever or original scares as one of his issues, overall the guys aren’t impressed.
Jeff is very excited by a recently released picture of Chris Hemsworth as Thor from the upcoming movie based on the Marvel...
The comic book on which The Losers is based on got a mixed reception from the TRS guys when they reviewed it a couple of weeks ago. The film however gets a pretty universal reaction and unfortunately it’s disappointment all round. The consensus is that it’s not a very good action movie and is only slightly redeemed by some good performances from the actors involved.
Exit Through the Gift Shop gets a much more positive response, a unique documentary looking at the culture of street art. The guys all found it a very well executed, interesting...
The “what if I were a superhero” aspect of Kick-Ass appeals to many geeks and the TRS crew are no exception. While Dan and Alex do have some criticisms they are fairly minimal, all 3 hosts agree that it is a fantastically well done movie across the board. The fact that the film is able to juggle several genre tropes and still able to resonate is cited as it’s main strength. The guys also discuss the news that Joss Whedon is apparently in final negotiations to direct the upcoming Avengers movie, a prospect that has them all very...
Date Night sounds like it’s destined to be great with Tina Fey and Steve Carell in leading roles but the TRS guys aren’t too sure what to make of it. They all loved the first half of the film, an apparently fairly honest and realistic portrayal of a long term relationship. There are some laughs to be had but the guys are all disappointed with the direction the film went in.
With no major gaming releases to cover the video game section can be and is in fact dedicated to nothing but iPad talk. Initally just talking about the device in...
Fun is the general consensus on Clash of the Titans from the TRS guys, not a great movie by any means. Dan thinks if a little bit of humour were injected it could potentially be very good but as it is it’s just a fun spectacle with some very cool action sequences.
The guys struggle to praise Metro 2033, for the most part they appreciate some of the ideas but Dan and Alex just couldn’t get into it. Even Jeff who really liked the game, for the world and the odd eastern european sensebility, can’t fully recommend it because he encountered...
