Retronauts returns with a fairly short episode, there isn’t much in the way of retro news or releases as of late. Chris Kohler starts things off by talking about his recent experience at the Classic Gaming Expo, while there he saw Halo 2600 a 4k Atari 2600 game made by Ed Fries. Actual 2600 cartridges of the game were being sold at the expo. Other than that Kohler tells some tales about picking up some rare game boxes and such.
The bulk of the show is dedicated to Scott Pilgrim, the idea seems to have been to talk about the game but the majority...
There is a distinct lack of retro news and releases lately so this weeks episode opens with some lamenting of that fact. The guys briefly talk about what little news there is, including Earthworm Jim on DSi, Game Rooms latest releases and Steam on Mac bringing Lucasarts adventure games with it.
The first of two main segments has Frank Cifaldi going over a feature he’s been running on 1UP, reporting on the new from 20 years ago. The segment is mostly taken up by Frank going over the events followed by some brief discussion and often contension...
Jeremy takes a back seat to Frank for this reunion episode with Tengen programmers Steve Woita, Franz Lanzinger, and Mark Morris.
Tengen was Atari’s console publishing and development branch, porting arcade games to the NES, and later to the Genesis. Nintendo’s strict restrictions on NES developers — manufacturing cartridges, dictating the number that were manufactured, and taking a large cut of the profit for themselves — made for an oppressive atmosphere. Tengen mostly made games without Nintendo’s Seal of Approval,...
This weeks Retronauts comes live (well almost) from PAX East. Regulars Jeremy Parish and Chris Kohler are joined by the returning Shane Bettenhausen and first time Retronauter Kurt Kalata of Hardcore Gaming 101. The subject of this episode is video game collecting, something all 4 on the show are familiar with.
Jeremy explains how he fell out of the collecting game, he began to feel having all these games he would never play was rather pointless. Chris Kohler is very vocal about the subject throughout, he clearly really enjoys “the hunt”...
A shorter than usual episode this week as there’s no main topic so it’s all Retro game news from the last few weeks. There hasn’t been too much but the guys do focus on a select few things, starting the the XBLA re-release of Perfect Dark. Sharkey says while it’s dated it’s definitely worth playing, especially if you were a fan of Goldeneye. He says PD is essentially a better Goldeneye and with this improved version it’s a great opportunity to play a game alot of people missed first time round.
Final Fantasy II,...
Ray Barnholt is in the hosting seat this week for an episode dedicated to Data East. Inspired by the recent release of Data East Arcade Classics for Wii. First off the guys touch on the weeks retro news, starting with the released of Megaman 10. Jeremy reviewed it and while he liked it he doesn’t seem overly excited about the game, it seems the retro styling may have lost its gmmicky appeal.
Activision made a point of making themselves look as bad as possible this week, aswell as the Infinity Ward drama they decided to shut down a Kings Quest...
Retronauts takes a rare break from its usual format for a more freeform episode this week. Right off the bat the crew derail the usual cold opening with random ramblings about games based on popular literature. The show gains a bit of structure again by moving onto retro news.
Footage and screens of Sonic 4 leaked this past week, in between some speculation Sharkey is not kind to the game. It was also announced that Dimps will be developing the game, Ray and Jeremy really liked their work on Sonic Advance and Sonic Rush so the news makes them a...
With the upcoming PSP re-release of the first game, Lunar is the game up for discussion on this weeks show. Jeremy drops a few spoilers for the game without any warning so if you haven’t played Lunar and plan to it may be best to skip this segment. Alot of the discussion floats around the differences between the many versions of the game. Being an early CD based game the guys talk about how appealing it was because of the novelty of voice acting and animated cutscenes.
After Lunar the crew move the topic onto the developer behind it, Game...
Microsoft’s Game Room is the first thing up for discussion in retro news, there is some debate whether Microsoft can realistically hit thousands of games within a year. This leads into a more general discussion about downloadable retro titles and the fact that the game room interface seems like a nicer or more interesting interface for that sort of thing.
Capcom’s fake retro revival of Dark Void is an interesting experiment and the crew enjoy the fabricated story behind it. Jeremy makes the comparison to Retro Game Challenge but feels...
While other podcasts reflect on the year just past Retronauts looks back a little further, specifically to 1975, 1980, 1985, 1990 and 1995. There’s some retro news to be covered first, the bulk of the discussion is about the disdain for Final Fight 3 and the mixed reactions to the recently released Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth.
1975 is only briefly talked about, with Pong home consoles being the most notable gaming event of note. Once they get into more eventful years like 1985 and 1990 the guys get very in depth with the goings on in...
A bit of a change to format and cast for this weeks Retronauts. Jeremy Parish has gathered some 1UP editors to come and share their Christmas gaming memories. After some fairly brief retro news, with the most noteworthy release being Super Smash Bros. on virtual console, it’s onto those memories.
As you’d expect from the topic the bulk of this weeks main segment isn’t the usual Retronauts. Mike Nelson shares some pretty amazing stories of Christmas scavenger hunts and presents hidden in laundry. Jeremy explains why Lemmings reminds...
This week’s show starts off with Jeremy talking about a feature he is currently working on for 1UP about game music that borrows from popular music. He has put in a couple of samples into the show, it sounds like an interesting feature for gaming music fans. Retro game news is a little more eventful this week as Virtual Console as well as the other downloadable services have had a more substantial update than usual.
As a follow-up of sorts to the Zelda centered seventh episode and in honor of Spirit Tracks, the bulk of this weeks podcast focuses...
With the release of New Super Mario Bros. Wii it’s finally time for the long awaited second Mario episode of Retronauts. After a brief bout of Mario impersonations it’s onto retro game news, of which there is little.
The discussion kicks off with Super Mario World. There is some debate about whether it was a true “showcase” of the Super Nintendo’s power. The consensus seems to be that it was very understated and subtle in its use of the SNES’s features, but generally used them in interesting ways. The conversation...
