The Oddcast: 09/27/2010

by Alex Martin in Games500 days ago

Chris has been eaten by bedbugs, so Matt Leone steps in. He, Sam, Sharkey, and Tina start with the surprising news of a Michael Jackson MMO coming in 2011. Meanwhile, in Chinatown, PS3 controllers are exploding. Less surprisingly, Halo: Reach didn’t sell well in Japan. THQ CEO Brian Farrell thinks smaller, cheaper games are the future, and EA Sports Head Peter Moore doesn’t think 3D is the future. Netlfix has made it to Canadian consoles. Lastly, Batman: Arkham City may feature vehicles and co-operative play. Next, they recommend a...

The Oddcast: 08/20/2010

by Alex Martin in Games537 days ago

Matt Leone is in for Sam Kennedy to discuss this week’s odd news with the rest of the regular crew. Rare is to update Xbox Avatars to more human-like proportions, so people playing Kinect will be less confused. Italian advocacy group Unico National has asked Take-Two to not to release Mafia II. Realtime Worlds is facing financial difficulties, but has rehired some staff. The National Youth Rights Association is preparing to fight for the future of video games with a dossier of socially, artistically, and politically valuable games. Halo Reach...

1UP’s replacement for 4 Guys 1UP is finally getting consistent. If you haven’t been catching this one since its inception, the main focus here is news. Ray Barnholt hosts with regulars, Justin Haywald and Matt Leone, and the show is fast, focused on volume, and full of bickering, but that not necessarily a bad thing. Bioware’s announcement of Mass Effect 2 heading to PS3 starts the show, and the general feeling is that this is a good thing. Microsoft is re-imagining their flight simulator series with Microsoft Flight, and the guys...

The Oddcast: 07/26/2010

by Alex Martin in Games564 days ago

Matt Leone steps in for Chris Grant to read the week’s weird news, talk about free games, and answer bizarre emails. In the news, the Wall Street Journal made unfounded claims about StarCraft 2′s development costs. Women (might) buy more virtual goods than men. 11 states will support California’s anti-first amendment policies, which Sharkey has a quick, coherent rant against. The UK government cancelled proposed tax breaks for developers (last month), and Epic are letting gamers choose whether a character lives or dies in...

4 Guys 1UP: 05/28/2010

by Jonathan Downin in Games623 days ago

Ray is back in the hosting seat. Even though last week was supposed to be the last of the experiments, this episode still seems to be in that zone. Ray does seem to handle it better than anyone else though. Quick Killzone 3 impressions start the cast and then the group moves on to Call of Duty: Black Ops, which everyone seems pretty hopeful for. Even though Alpha Protocol has been almost universally receiving middling reviews, Sharkey gave it a surprising B+ in his review and the whole group is pretty high on the game. Word of Insomiac going to...

4 Guys 1UP: 04/02/2010

by Jonathan Downin in Games679 days ago

It’s all about PAX East at the beginning of this week’s 4 Guys 1UP yet-to-be-re-named flagship 1UP podcast. The attempted theft of Breach code is the first PAX-related topic and then the group moves on to discuss their overall impressions of PAX. It’s safe to say that they were impressed by the show, and the attendance. APB, Limbo, Hydrophobia, Prince of Persia and many others get some discussion time. The middle section is all about the Nintendo 3DS and DS XL. Even after the exhaustive discussion about the forthcoming handeld...

4 Guys 1UP: 03/26/2010

by Jonathan Downin in Games683 days ago

It is another non-traditional show this week with a roundtable discussion about the Nintendo 3DS starting the conversation. Chris Kohler lays-out the “facts” and then the group gets into their thoughts about the DS successor. The opinions range from hopeful to skeptical with some almost heated moments of discussion between Jeremy and Chris, but it is safe to say that Nintendo knows how to mix things up. The next few segments are interviews and they are a great addition to the show. Consultant, and creator of Marble Madness, Mark Cerny...

4 Guys 1UP: 03/19/2010

by Jonathan Downin in Games693 days ago

So, 4 Guys 1UP is back with Jeremy at the helm this week bookending an interview section that David Ellis recorded at GDC with David Cage and Stig Asmussen of Heavy Rain and God of War III respectively. Jeremy is obviously a little uncomfortable in the lead role here and the rhythm of the conversation is a bit stilted. They admit that they don’t know what the future holds, but for now it’s Jeremy and gang. God of War III starts the discussion and Jeremy finds nothing to like about the game, or franchise on a whole, as Matt argues...

4 Guys 1UP: 03/05/2010

by Jonathan Downin in Games707 days ago

The massive week of news starts with discussion about the recent PS3 leap year issue. The guys then move on to a lengthy segment of speculation on details surrounding the issues between the former Infinity Ward heads and Activision. Portal 2 has been confirmed and the crew covered the ARG-like events leading up to the announcement and touch on the possibilities of Valve bringing more than just Steam to the Mac side of things. In the second segment, Ray talks about his experience at the Nintendo Media Summit, but the conversation quickly moves...

4 Guys 1UP: 02/26/2010

by Jonathan Downin in Games714 days ago

It’s another non-traditional show with David and Matt in Tokyo for undisclosed reasons. This does afford them the chance to sit down with 8-4‘s John Riccardi and Mark MacDonald to discuss the recent Nintendo announcements. The discussion covers the gamut of release dates to a possible new handheld at E3, but there isn’t too much of substance here. The second segment is even more meandering with the crew touching on Heavy Rain, the influence of Western development in Japan and the “neutering” of the US release of Yakuza...

4 Guys 1UP: 01/08/2010

by Jonathan Downin in Games763 days ago

It’s another shorter cast this week with not quite 4 guys. David and Matt Leone are joined by G4′s Patrick Klepek to discuss CES 2010. The announcement of Xbox Live Game Room peeked some interest here, but the pricing doesn’t seem right to the guys. There are also rumors flying around about Project Natal’s loss of an on-board processor and the implication this will have for developers. Lost Planet 2 continues to look like “Monster Hunter with guns,” and Matt is excited about another 8-bit Mega Man in Mega Man...

4 Guys 1UP: 01/01/2010

by Jonathan Downin in Games769 days ago

This is another non-traditional episode due to the holidays. 1UP friend, and Sega Producer, Constantine Hantzopoulos is back and the whole show is dedicated to allowing him to provide a bigger window into the development process. He is the perfect person to do this as he is clearly not inhibited by PR pressures in any way. Constantine starts out by covering his path through the industry and continues on to talk about problems with the structure of the development/publishing system. He also touches on some of the problems with past Sega projects...

4 Guys 1UP: 12/18/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games783 days ago

There aren’t that many games covered this week, but the games that are, get a serious amount of time. Mass Effect 2 kicks things off, and the guys are not shying away from spoiler, but David does announce the time-stamps before the spoilers begin. It sounds like a lot has changed from the first one, and the tech is much improved. Heavy Rain also gets a ton of time since Matt has played a significant amount of the game. The games seems somewhat divisive, but it may just culminate into something truly fresh. With the 2 big games out of the way,...

4 Guys 1UP: 11/26/2009

by Jonathan Downin in Games806 days ago

This week’s 4 Guys 1UP is a departure from the normal format and contains no game discussion. Instead, the whole podcast is devoted to the history of 1UP, from it’s inception up until now. While the group shares many personal here, it is not all just reminiscing about the old days. Sam gets pretty in-depth on some technical issues involved in getting the site off the ground, and what it has taken to continue improving and expanding on the site. When it came to naming the site, “1UP” almost didn’t make it. There are...

Mobcast Episode 016

by Jonathan Downin in Games907 days ago

It’s a fairly tame Mobcast this week with Dan out of the office and Demian taking the reigns on this one.  Jason Wilson and Matt Leone tend to be on the quite side so it’s nice to have Area5‘s Ryan O’Donnell sitting in to add some commentary. After quickly admiring the Borderlands box art the conversation moves onto Little Big Planet and if has had staying power.  The conclusion seems to be that it has drifted out of the spotlight due to its cumbersome DLC model on both the developer and user-created fronts.  More substantial...
