GWJ Conference Call Episode 217

by Jon Cole in Games428 days ago

With Julian at the helm of this week’s Conference Call and guests Ken Levine and Justin McElroy helping fill out the cast, you’re guarenteed an excellent episode of Gamers with Jobs. Justin jumps in first with his experience playing Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood. He seems to agree with the widely held opinion that Brotherhood captures much of the same magic as AC2 while managing to build upon it through more story-related sidequests, complex mechanics, and multiplayer. Julian seems very anxious to talk about Epic Mickey, so Allen...

GWJ Conference Call Episode 212

by Jon Cole in Games463 days ago

Gamers with Jobs is decked out with guests this week, welcoming Russ Pitts and Justin McElroy to the show. Rock Band 3 is likely one of the biggest releases of the past weeks and earns some discussion at the beginning of the show. The guys are clearly quite smitten with the game, sharing their thoughts on the keyboard implementation, user experience, points of entry, and so on with few complaints. They go on to say that this is clearly the best way to get into the music game space if you somehow haven’t thus far. RPGs cover much of the rest...

Player One Podcast – Episode 202 (09/06/10) – PAX 2010

by Ross Adams in Games521 days ago

It’s a PAX special this week, much like last year CJ managed to grab a random assortment of special guests to join him. The first of which is Joystiq‘s Justin McElroy. It’s a pretty interesting discussion to start off the show, with CJ asking Justin about his experiences at this and other expos aswell as how he got into the industry and his thoughts on it. For the second (very very noisy) segment CJ is joined by friend (or is that enemy?) of the show Chris Baker, who works for Marvel Entertainment. Possibly the least structured...

Joystiq Podcast E3 2010 edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games595 days ago

Despite their ambitions, the Joystiq boys weren’t able to record any E3 podcasts while at the convention, so they are back this week to go over some of their highlights from the show. Kinect didn’t do it for them, and besides some positive impressions about Child of Eden, they are pretty down on it. The new Xbox 360 Slim also doesn’t receive much love, except from Luddy, who is the only one who actually has one of the new consoles. Sony doesn’t fair much better with Justin in particular laying the hate on the Playstation...

Joystiq Podcast 142 – Rebirth edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games609 days ago

Joystiq.com has received a huge overhaul and the guys spend the first 20 minutes talking about motivations for the re-design and some of the new features. Once the boys get into games, Justin gets right into Green Day: Rock Band. Chris had a chance to see Rock Band 3 during the E3 judges period and now that the embargo is up, he share some quite postive thoughts on Harmonix’s latest. Mortal Kombat is coming back and the first trailer looks promising. Telltale announced that they will be doing episodic games based on the Back to the Future...

Joystiq Podcast 141 – Big News edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games616 days ago

Chris is out again this week, and in his absence, it appears that the industry has decided to do nothing. There is just a week left until E3 starts, so the lack of news is pretty normal. The guys predict that this year should prove to be a big one for E3 reveals. With not much news, it’s all played games and emails. Ludwig kicks things off with talk about his time with DJ Hero. He picked it up on the cheap and is enjoying learning new rhythm game mechanics as apposed now ingrained guitar mechanics. Luddy also names Split Second his 3rd favorite...

Joystiq Podcast 138 – The Real Monsters edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games637 days ago

It’s clear that the guys had some technical issues with these week’s episode. They alude to rerecording the show a couple of time and Justin is traded-out for Griffin at about the 30 minute mark. Ludwig starts the game talk with Rocket Knight. Justin gets into his experience with the iPad after getting a demo unit from Apple. He has been playing Mirror’s Edge and enjoying his time with it, calling himself “won over.”Chris is still trudging through Final Fantasy XIII, but he is most excited to talk about Steam for Mac,...

Joystiq Podcast 137 – An Unknown Terror edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games644 days ago

Alan Wake is proving to be a big hit among the Joystiq guys. Chris says that is his favorite game of the year so far and that he thinks it is better than Mass Effect 2. On top of all of that, he also says that he hasn’t felt this way about a game since Portal– high praise indeed. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Justin was playing Nier for review, but quit due to the “offensive” game design– don’t miss his video about the game. Metro 2033 gets some kind words from Ludwig and Justin touches on last week’s...

Joystiq Podcast 135 – Miracles edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games658 days ago

Justin starts the cast with his impressions of the latest Sam & Max. Ludwig gets into Splinter Cell a bit, but the conversation quickly moves on to a lengthy discussion about Final Fantasy XIII. Ludwig enjoyed it, Chris thinks he is enjoying it, and Justin hasn’t played it but knows he won’t like it. It has been a big news week and the guys start with word of Warner Brothers buying MMO developer Turbine for $160 million. Capcom is in hot water after including a rather constraining DRM system in their recent PS3 release of Final Fight:...

Joystiq Podcast 134 – Generations of Hope edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games665 days ago

Deadly Premonition continues to pick up steam. The guys dub it as having an almost cult status, and with the current Endurance Run going on over at Giant Bomb, they may be right. Justin has been playing indie developer, Jason Rohrer’s, Sleep is Death and to say he is enjoying the game would be a huge understatement. It sounds like a completely unique take on storytelling and multiplayer. You can grab it for $14 on the Sleep is Death site. Justin and Ludwig have been playing Splinter Cell Conviction and the opinions are somewhat mixed. Justin...

Joystiq Podcast 133 – Suppervillains edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games672 days ago

Mass Effect 2 has seen the release of its first paid DLC pack in Kasumi – Stolen Memory, and the final word is that it is just okay and not a great value proposition. After a bit of discussion about the lackluster moments in God of War III, the guys move on to Final Fantasy XIII and even more frustrations. We now know that the reveal announcement of Gears of War 3 was meant to happen on Thursday night due to a reveal banner accidentally going up on Xbox Live on Friday morning. Someone forgot to flip a switch due to the change in schedule,...

Joystiq Podcast 131 – Exthrilarating edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games692 days ago

Get ready for an abundance of awkward silences and jarring bouts of over-talking this week. Metro 2033 has been getting some good coverage and that continues here. Justin has been enjoying the game and he talks about it here. The Xbox has been the focus of several rumors this week, including word that it may be getting USB storage support and a revamped slim restyling of the console itself. Joystiq broke the story of USB storage and it would be a welcome addition to the upcoming spring dashboard update. Redesigned hardware also makes sense with...

Joystiq Podcast 130 – March Into Positivity edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games707 days ago

It’s a completely packed shows this week with the guys starting off on Battlefield Bad Company 2. The opinions are positive on the game, but not overly so. Heavy Rain is receiving some DLC and Ludwig touches on AvP and Resident Evil 5 DLC. Portal 2, which will be a full-fledged sequel with a full game sticker price, kicks off the jammed news segment and the excitement level is understandably high. This leads into the almost confirmed news that Valve is bringing Steam to Mac. The guys speculate on the possibility that Valve may be bringing...

Joystiq Podcast 129 – JPXSG edition

by Jonathan Downin in Games713 days ago

After Justin’s utterly scathing opinions on the game last week, Chris and Ludwig have finished Heavy Rain and they enjoyed a whole lot more. They get into some of the strengths of the game, but are holding back for a Spoiled Rotten segment on the game next week. Ludwig touches on the recent Resident Evil 5 DLC and then the guys hit the big Nintendo news from the Nintendo Media Summit. The guys hit a few other topics including the recent banning issue on Xbox Live, but the bulk of the second half of the show is all emails. Ludwig manages, as...
