Retronauts Episode 89: 03/18/2010

by Ross Adams in Games790 days ago

A shorter than usual episode this week as there’s no main topic so it’s all Retro game news from the last few weeks. There hasn’t been too much but the guys do focus on a select few things, starting the the XBLA re-release of Perfect Dark. Sharkey says while it’s dated it’s definitely worth playing, especially if you were a fan of Goldeneye. He says PD is essentially a better Goldeneye and with this improved version it’s a great opportunity to play a game alot of people missed first time round. Final Fantasy II,...

4 Guys 1UP: 03/19/2010

by Jonathan Downin in Games790 days ago

So, 4 Guys 1UP is back with Jeremy at the helm this week bookending an interview section that David Ellis recorded at GDC with David Cage and Stig Asmussen of Heavy Rain and God of War III respectively. Jeremy is obviously a little uncomfortable in the lead role here and the rhythm of the conversation is a bit stilted. They admit that they don’t know what the future holds, but for now it’s Jeremy and gang. God of War III starts the discussion and Jeremy finds nothing to like about the game, or franchise on a whole, as Matt argues...

Active Time Babble XI: Pokemon & Dragon Age | 03/18/2010

by Ross Adams in Games791 days ago

This weeks show kicks off with Scooter talking about recently announced premium Mass Effect 2 DLC. Aside from saying it looks good there’s not much discussion of the DLC itself rather the reasoning behind Zaeeds integration into the Normandy and whether new party member Kasumi will suffer a similar fate. Mass Effect 2 continues to be a topic of discussion as the guys move onto talking about RPG related GDC panels. Kat questions whether the Pokewalker, which comes with the Gold/Silver remakes, will appeal to kids or if it’s just the older...

Retronauts Episode 88: 03/05/2010

by Ross Adams in Games804 days ago

Ray Barnholt is in the hosting seat this week for an episode dedicated to Data East. Inspired by the recent release of Data East Arcade Classics for Wii. First off the guys touch on the weeks retro news, starting with the released of Megaman 10. Jeremy reviewed it and while he liked it he doesn’t seem overly excited about the game, it seems the retro styling may have lost its gmmicky appeal. Activision made a point of making themselves look as bad as possible this week, aswell as the Infinity Ward drama they decided to shut down a Kings Quest...

Active Time Babble X: Final Fantasy XIII | 02/25/2010

by Ross Adams in Games812 days ago

Final Fantasy XIII is the only subject of note in this weeks ATB. Xenoblade is briefly touched on in news but once that’s over it is onto FFXIII.One would expect spoilers during a near 2 hour conversation of a largely story oriented game but somehow this is an entirely spoiler free episode. With the story only vaguely discussed alot of the chat revolves around where Final Fantasy stands in relation to the current gaming landscape. While the game is not drastically different from what has come before it is enough of a change that it bears some...

Retronauts Episode 87: 02/18/2010

by Ross Adams in Games819 days ago

Retronauts takes a rare break from its usual format for a more freeform episode this week. Right off the bat the crew derail the usual cold opening with random ramblings about games based on popular literature. The show gains a bit of structure again by moving onto retro news. Footage and screens of Sonic 4 leaked this past week, in between some speculation Sharkey is not kind to the game. It was also announced that Dimps will be developing the game, Ray and Jeremy really liked their work on Sonic Advance and Sonic Rush so the news makes them a...

Active Time Babble IX: Trek Online & Rougelikes | 02/11/2010

by Ross Adams in Games827 days ago

This weeks shows starts off briefly looking at the recent RPG news, not alot to talk about and most of the time is spent pondering the Fallout New Vegas trailer. Before moving onto the main topic of the show Kat shares her thoughts on Star Trek Online, which she has been putting alot of time into. While she really likes the space combat she is unsure what Cryptic can do to sustain the game. She speculates that maybe it would have been better had the game been given more development time. Shiren The Wanderer was recently released for the Wii and...

4 Guys 1UP

4 Guys 1UP: 02/05/2010

by Jonathan Downin in Games833 days ago

Sonic 4 and the expectations surrounding the game start the podcast this week. The guys milk the fan reactions to recent Sonic title announcements to share their skepticism. The recent Fallout: New Vegas trailer spurs some conversation about what this new entry may be and what Obsidian may bring to the table with their take on the series. The (now retracted) ESRB description of Dead or Alive Paradise enrages Ray, but amuzes the rest of the group. No More Heroes gets some attention and then the guys move onto talk about the 4 year old game that...

Retronauts Episode 86: 02/04/2010

by Ross Adams in Games834 days ago

With the upcoming PSP re-release of the first game, Lunar is the game up for discussion on this weeks show. Jeremy drops a few spoilers for the game without any warning so if you haven’t played Lunar and plan to it may be best to skip this segment. Alot of the discussion floats around the differences between the many versions of the game. Being an early CD based game the guys talk about how appealing it was because of the novelty of voice acting and animated cutscenes. After Lunar the crew move the topic onto the developer behind it, Game...

Active Time Babble VIII: Mass Effect 2 | 01/28/2010

by Ross Adams in Games841 days ago

Recent RPG related news stories are very briefly hit upon at the top of the show this week. The 360 release of Monster Hunter and the American release of Persona 3 Portable being the more notable ones. Before the bigger RPG release of the month is discussed the crew take some time to talk about Sands of Destruction on the DS. “Odd” seems to be the general feeling Jeremy and Kat get from the game, with an apparently broken battle system that is often based on pure luck. The bulk of the show is taken up by a surprisingly spoiler free segment...

Retronauts Episode 85: 01/21/2010

by Ross Adams in Games847 days ago

Microsoft’s Game Room is the first thing up for discussion in retro news, there is some debate whether Microsoft can realistically hit thousands of games within a year. This leads into a more general discussion about downloadable retro titles and the fact that the game room interface seems like a nicer or more interesting interface for that sort of thing. Capcom’s fake retro revival of Dark Void is an interesting experiment and the crew enjoy the fabricated story behind it. Jeremy makes the comparison to Retro Game Challenge but feels...

Active Time Babble VII: Final Fantasy XIII | 01/14/2010

by Ross Adams in Games855 days ago

It may not be out until March but that doesn’t stop Final Fantasy XIII taking up the first segment of the show, Jeremy, Kat and Christian have been playing the Japanese version. Jeremy and Christian soon came to the realisation that the game is so narrative heavy it really should be played in their native language. The second part of the show is devoted to RPG highlights on 2009 and upcoming RPGs of the year to come. Everyone has trouble thinking of many standout RPGs from last year, although Kat does give Demon’s Souls some more love....

Retronauts Episode 84: 01/07/2010

by Ross Adams in Games861 days ago

While other podcasts reflect on the year just past Retronauts looks back a little further, specifically to 1975, 1980, 1985, 1990 and 1995. There’s some retro news to be covered first, the bulk of the discussion is about the disdain for Final Fight 3 and the mixed reactions to the recently released Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth. 1975 is only briefly talked about, with Pong home consoles being the most notable gaming event of note. Once they get into more eventful years like 1985 and 1990 the guys get very in depth with the goings on in...

Active Time Babble VI: Avernum | 12/31/2009

by Ross Adams in Games869 days ago

With everyone out of the office for the holidays it’s left to Jeremy Parish to take on hosting duties alone for the last Active Time Babble of 09. He’s joined by Spiderweb Software‘s Jeff Vogel. Spiderweb is an independent developer, run by Jeff, who have been making RPGs for PC and Mac for over ten years. Jeff discusses the process he goes through when making the game, what influences the stories he tells in his games and various other tales about being a very small developer. The show closes out with some talk and plugging of...

Retronauts Episode 83: 12/22/2009

by Ross Adams in Games878 days ago

A bit of a change to format and cast for this weeks Retronauts. Jeremy Parish has gathered some 1UP editors to come and share their Christmas gaming memories. After some fairly brief retro news, with the most noteworthy release being Super Smash Bros. on virtual console, it’s onto those memories. As you’d expect from the topic the bulk of this weeks main segment isn’t the usual Retronauts. Mike Nelson shares some pretty amazing stories of Christmas scavenger hunts and presents hidden in laundry. Jeremy explains why Lemmings reminds...
