Active Time Babble XXVI: Radiant Historia, DC Universe and Costume Quest | 11/18/2010

by Ross Adams in Games449 days ago

It’s a packed episode this week with three segments and four games between them. Kicking things off Jeremy joins Kat to talk about Tactics Ogre and Radiant Historia. He goes in depth on both games various battle systems and relations to the stories. As you might expect from a discussion about a couple of hardcore JRPGs there’s alot to taken in here. For the second segment Kat is joined by resident comic expert Mike Cruz aswell as the not quite an expert but still knowledgeable Scooter. They are there to talk about DC Universe Online,...

Active Time Babble XXIII: TGS Wrap-up and Pokemon Black | 10/07/2010

by Ross Adams in Games490 days ago

ATB is back, just in time for its one year anniversary no less! A shorter show than usual, in which our hosts discuss Tokyo Game Show news to start off. Jeremy thinks this years show was alot less of a downer than last years, which was filled with the depressing sentiment that Japanese game development was doomed. There were some great games being shown off this year however, including El Shaddai, Ni no Kuni and Valkyria Chronicles 3. All of which the guys are looking foward to and think look very promising. While Jeremy wasn’t expecting it...

Active Time Babble XXI: Ys Seven & Tactical RPGs | 08/26/2010

by Ross Adams in Games533 days ago

Scott Sharkey and Travis Williams join Kat for the first segment of this weeks show to discuss the announcement that Cryptic is working on some kind of reboot of Neverwinter. Travis is a big D&D nerd and really enjoyed the Neverwinter Nights game so he’s excited but there’s alot of skepticism about whether Cryptic can make a good game, let alone a non-MMO game. Ray Barnholt, Jeremy Parish and special guest Christian Nutt join Kat for the rest of the episode, starting with the second segment in which they discuss Ys Seven. The guys...

Retronauts Episode 97: 08/11/2010

by Ross Adams in Games, Movies547 days ago

Retronauts returns with a fairly short episode, there isn’t much in the way of retro news or releases as of late. Chris Kohler starts things off by talking about his recent experience at the Classic Gaming Expo, while there he saw Halo 2600 a 4k Atari 2600 game made by Ed Fries. Actual 2600 cartridges of the game were being sold at the expo. Other than that Kohler tells some tales about picking up some rare game boxes and such. The bulk of the show is dedicated to Scott Pilgrim, the idea seems to have been to talk about the game but the majority...

Active Time Babble XV: Ys & Threads of Fate | 05/21/2010

by Ross Adams in Games628 days ago

It’s just Kat and guest Christian Nutt for the first part of the show, which does not cover larping. While going through the RPG news they both end up reminiscing about the 90s and their experiences with RPGs on the original Playstation. A somewhat sassy Jeremy Parish returns from a meeting to join Christian and Kat in discussing action RPGs. Just what is an action RPG, is the phrase (which the hosts themselves admit isn’t really used) even relevant anymore in the age of Mass Effect 2 and it’s ilk. With many games gaining “RPG...

Retronauts Episode 92: 05/13/2010

by Ross Adams in Games637 days ago

There is a distinct lack of retro news and releases lately so this weeks episode opens with some lamenting of that fact. The guys briefly talk about what little news there is, including Earthworm Jim on DSi, Game Rooms latest releases and Steam on Mac bringing Lucasarts adventure games with it. The first of two main segments has Frank Cifaldi going over a feature he’s been running on 1UP, reporting on the new from 20 years ago. The segment is mostly taken up by Frank going over the events followed by some brief discussion and often contension...

Formerly 4 Guys 1UP: 05/07/2010

by Derek Lavigne in Games642 days ago

The podcast, name withheld, is hosted this week by Ray Barnholt who usually sticks to retro games, although this week he’s all “beards and big guns” in order to fit the mold of this show. Talk on the gaming front starts off with Scooter and Justin discussing Alan Wake, but differ in their opinions of some of the game’s quirkier features. The guys give their opinions on Picross 3D before moving on to Scooter’s opinions on Fallout: New Vegas which sounds promising. Justin has been playing Lost Planet 2, which most of...

Active Time Babble XIV: Etrian Odyssey III & 3D Dot Game Heroes | 05/07/2010

by Ross Adams in Games643 days ago

After a brief hiatus ATB is back and it’s an Atlus heavy episode this week with the majority of the games discussed coming from the developer/publisher. RPG news kicks off with the story that Square-Enix has trademarked the name Four Heroes of Light, which one can assume will be the western release of Final Fantasy Gaiden: Four Warriors of Light. The story leads to a discussion of why some games won’t be coming out on the DS, namely R4 cards and the rampant piracy of games that wouldn’t sell big numbers to begin with. What is meant...

Formerly 4 Guys 1UP: 04/30/2010

by Derek Lavigne in Games651 days ago

This week, the podcast former known as…will be known as 1UPchuck. Jeremy takes the helm again but announces this will be his last week and it sounds like we will finally get to see the future of the flagship next week. This week is shaping up to be the Activision episode. First up, the news that Bungie signed a 10 year publishing agreement with Activision sent the games world for a spin and Frank Cifaldi clarifies some of the details. The next Call of Duty game, Black Ops, was also just announced and is the next game from Treyarch and the...

by Derek Lavigne in Games656 days ago

We finally hear a peep from the flagship 1up podcast, headed up again by Jeremy Parish and being called “The Ugly Babycast” for the week. The show starts off with Jeremy, Sam, Frank, Ray and Cameron Davis from Krome Studios discussing the exodus from Infinity Ward to Respawn Entertainment as they haven’t had a show since it started happening. The show then switches gears to a separate recorded segment which includes Tina and Nelson talking with Jeremy about seeing the Halo Reach beta. More somber talk of the recent Sega layoffs...

Retronauts Episode 91: 04/16/2010

by Alex Martin in Games665 days ago

Jeremy takes a back seat to Frank for this reunion episode with Tengen programmers Steve Woita, Franz Lanzinger, and Mark Morris. Tengen was Atari’s console publishing and development branch, porting arcade games to the NES, and later to the Genesis. Nintendo’s strict restrictions on NES developers — manufacturing cartridges, dictating the number that were manufactured, and taking a large cut of the profit for themselves — made for an oppressive atmosphere. Tengen mostly made games without Nintendo’s Seal of Approval,...

4 Guys 1UP: 04/02/2010

by Jonathan Downin in Games679 days ago

It’s all about PAX East at the beginning of this week’s 4 Guys 1UP yet-to-be-re-named flagship 1UP podcast. The attempted theft of Breach code is the first PAX-related topic and then the group moves on to discuss their overall impressions of PAX. It’s safe to say that they were impressed by the show, and the attendance. APB, Limbo, Hydrophobia, Prince of Persia and many others get some discussion time. The middle section is all about the Nintendo 3DS and DS XL. Even after the exhaustive discussion about the forthcoming handeld...

Retronauts Episode 90: 04/01/2010

by Ross Adams in Games680 days ago

This weeks Retronauts comes live (well almost) from PAX East. Regulars Jeremy Parish and Chris Kohler are joined by the returning Shane Bettenhausen and first time Retronauter Kurt Kalata of Hardcore Gaming 101. The subject of this episode is video game collecting, something all 4 on the show are familiar with. Jeremy explains how he fell out of the collecting game, he began to feel having all these games he would never play was rather pointless. Chris Kohler is very vocal about the subject throughout, he clearly really enjoys “the hunt”...

4 Guys 1UP: 03/26/2010

by Jonathan Downin in Games683 days ago

It is another non-traditional show this week with a roundtable discussion about the Nintendo 3DS starting the conversation. Chris Kohler lays-out the “facts” and then the group gets into their thoughts about the DS successor. The opinions range from hopeful to skeptical with some almost heated moments of discussion between Jeremy and Chris, but it is safe to say that Nintendo knows how to mix things up. The next few segments are interviews and they are a great addition to the show. Consultant, and creator of Marble Madness, Mark Cerny...

Active Time Babble XII: Resonance of Fate | 03/25/2010

by Ross Adams in Games685 days ago

Kat Bailey takes on hosting duties this week, kicking things off with the only bit of RPG news to report. Square-Enix announcing Chaos Rings, an RPG for the iPhone, this leads to a brief discussion about other RPG type games on iPhone such as Wolfenstein RPG and its ilk. Final Fantasy XIII gets some more time on the show, the guys stay away from any story elements as Bob hasn’t finished it yet. The discussion mostly consists of everyone comparing the party setups they used while playing the game. Which everyone would like to have a mix of...
