TWiT 253: E3 iPhone 4

by Jon Cole in Games, Tech697 days ago

This Week in Tech is more like This Week in Games, which shouldn’t be a big surprise to anyone tuned into the events wrapped around E3.  The most interesting thing about this particular episode that it brings together a great set of people to talk about it – Leo Laporte, Jeff Gerstmann, Jeff Cannata, and Veronica Belmont. They do manage to delve into the major tech announcements at the conference, including Microsoft Kinect, Playstation Move, and Nintendo 3DS.  They each manage to hit on a couple of their games of the show, which include Mortal...

Giant Bombcast E3 2010

by Jonathan Downin in Games700 days ago

Okay, this is one of those “these episodes are out and you should check them out if you like Giant Bomb and the craziness that happens when they get a bunch of guests to come on and talk about games while drinking” posts. There really is no way to sum up all the craziness that happens here. The game talk is heavier in the earlier episodes and the off-the-wall discussions reach an apex in the final episode with another polarizing appearance from Leigh Alexander. (Day Zero) We run down the day’s events, including the Microsoft, Electronic...

Giant Bombcast 06-08-2010

After a few quick drink taste tests, Red Dead Redemption dominates early parts of the conversation with the guys wondering how in the world Vinny spent 49 hours on the game. Jeff andRyan have been playing a lot of Green Day: Rock Band and as good as the game sounds, it still doesn’t do anyone any good if you aren’t a Green Day fan. Brad is almost baffled when asked what games he has been playing and can only manage to force out a couple thoughts on Doom II. Turning back to rhythm games, PowerGig takes up more time than it sounds like...

Giant Bombcast 06-01-2010

by Derek Lavigne in Games716 days ago

This week’s Bombcast is brought to you by a long Memorial Day weekend. Brad spent a good portion of the weekend playing Doom II on XBLA when he, like Vinny and Ryan, weren’t locked into Red Dead Redemption. Not having picked up on the craze of the other three, Jeff played a lot of kart racers, spending time with ModNation Racers and Blur. He also laments the game that Alpha Protocol could have been. After a little talk of Crackdown 2 from Brad and Vinny, a discussion takes place about whether or not Crackdown was even that good of a...

Giant Bombcast 05-25-2010

by Jonathan Downin in Games723 days ago

Pre-E3 leaks and Jeff’s time doing his E3 judges thing start of the cast this week. Rock Band 3 is now all but official. Tron Evolution sounds like it may have something to offer, and Jeff is surprisingly excited about the forthcoming non-movie tie-in Pirates od the Caribbean game. Vinny and Brad get into Sam & Max before the big Red Dead Redemption talk begins. Blur, Mod Nation Racers and Super Mario Galaxy 2 end the played games talk. News kicks-off with talk of the recent reveal of Killzone 3, and quickly moves onto a hate-fest about...

This week’s Giant Bombcast has a couple of guests and starts off living up to the name of the show. Alex Navarro and Matt Rorie are there to announce that they have become part of the Whiskey Media family and will be a part of the new movie site Screened. Vinny brings things back to reality by saying how playing Wheelman sucked all the energy out of him, but turns it around by discussing his time with Ryan at Pixar. Jeff recently reviewed Skate 3 and seems to enjoy it, although he feels it may be more for hardcore Skate series fans. Brad runs...

This week’s Bombcast starts off with Vinny discussing the end of his time with Splinter Cell: Conviction and Jeff making a bold proclamation, that headshots are ruining video games. Vinny has also been playing Wheelman for some odd reason, which leads to an amusing conversation about how Vin Diesel’s time has passed. Jeff hasn’t been playing a whole lot he can talk about aside from Picross 3D, which he says changes the game up a lot, but is a must play. Brad has been splitting his time between wandering in the woods with Alan Wake...

Giant Bombcast 04-27-2010

The Bombcast has leveled up with new headphones for all it seems for the purpose of not blowing out listeners’ ears. Vinny starts things off like usual by talking about the fun he’s been having with the Just Cause 2 modding community and it has reinvigorated his interest in the game. Jeff has been playing a couple of games for review in Super Street Fighter IV and Dead to Rights: Retribution, one of which he loves, the other he doesn’t. Brad talks at length about the Starcraft II single player that he had seen recently as well...

Brad is again out of the office on assignment this week, so Dave Snider sits in on the Bombcast for the first time in a while. Vinny starts the show off talking about his early experiences with Sam and Max: Season 3. Dave brings his obscure hardcore simulation tastes to the table this week with Mount & Blade: Warband, a medieval battle sim that scares me just hearing about. With embargoes lifting this morning,  Jeff discusses a lot of the games he saw while in Hawaii at Capcom’s Captivate event, which are too numerous to begin to mention...

Jeff and Brad are back this week from various events before setting back off later this week. Vinny starts off the conversation with a little Game Room talk before the rest of the guys quickly commandeer it with some talk of high level retro game action. Ryan and Vinny went to see Ghost Recon: Future Soldier last week which Ryan says is more of a third person cover-based shooter with some sci-fi elements. Jeff moves on to discuss his experience with Splinter Cell: Conviction, which he says is the most approachable game in the series. Also, Ryan...

This week’s Bombcast starts off with a very jet-lagged Jeff Gerstmann discussing his trip to the east coast the previous week to see not only UFC Undisputed 2010, but also the inaugural PAX East. Jeff says that although PAX East was a little “dirtier” than PAX West, it was comparable in size as well as mentioning his panel. He also quickly talks about a few of the games he saw at the show. Brad has still been plugging away at Final Fantasy XIII and although he thought he was close to completion, he may still have a few hours left...

This week’s Bombcast starts off with talk of ant ritual sacrifice, true story. Getting to games, Vinny talks about his time with Dragon Age: Origins – Awakening and reveals the depths of his nerdom and love for the Dragon Age novels. He’s also taken some time to jump back into another expansion, this one for Dawn of War II as well as God of War III, which he and Ryan both seem to agree feels a little bit soulless. Jeff then runs the gamut of games he’s playing including Command & Conquer 4, Super Street Fighter IV, WarioWare...

Giant Bombcast 03-16-2010

by Derek Lavigne in Games794 days ago

After a week of craziness and wild stories at GDC, the Bombcast is back in the basement this week. After a quick roundup of previews from events and parties the previous week including Splinter Cell and Medal of Honor, Brad admits that he is now enjoying Final Fantasy XIII but says that it took him eight and a half hours to get to that point. Also on the Japanese RPG front, Jeff started Yakuza 3 and so far thinks there are a lot of weirdly broken components that made it into the game. Ryan mentions seeing the new Lara Croft game and seems interested...

Giant Bombcast 03-09-2010

by Jonathan Downin in Games801 days ago

It is a very special Bombcast this week if you are a fan of the guys from their old stomping grounds– none other than 38 Studio’s own Rich Gallup is on the show. GDC talk kicks things off before the crew head into a healthy recently played games segment. Borderlands gets some more love and Bad Company 2 is entertaining Jeff. Brad hits StarCraft 2 before digging into his Final Fantasy XIII experiences thus far. Not all is rosy with the latest iteration, but the best moment comes when Jeff realizes that “Phoenix Down” actually...

This week’s Bombcast starts off with a late addition segment focusing on the recent Infinity Ward/Activision controversy. All of the guys have their unique perspectives but seem to agree that Activision holds all the legal rights and that IW may have tried to go rogue unsuccessfully. They also feel, barring litigation, that there will be a new studio very soon from the former IW heads. Ryan starts off the actual podcast by discussing his trip to Liverpool with Vinny to see Blur, which he says looks and feels much better than it did the last...
